not really a huge fan of John but loved that he mentioned Safire & Sweet Sensation!!

He mentioned the term "freestyle" as well, saying that Madonna stole it from them. While I was aware that some of Madonna's music used elements of freestyle, I never heard it put quite like that before.

I didn't look at that way before. However, when I look back on that era...you can tell Madonna went for a more latin dance sound think "la isla bonita" and "who's that girl"...especially the remixes.Madonna was from the Detroit,Michigan area. She moved to NY and quickly picked up the Puerto Rican/Italian club look. No one in Detroit dressed that way.

Madonna's Album cover from that era were a direct imitation of Safire's look. Nothing against Madonna. She has always been good at picking up a style and making it mainstream. Vogueing was popular in the gay clubs of NYC in the 80's and then Madonna brought it to the spotlight in 1990 with her hit Vogue. She took underground dance culture (mostly latin hip hop back then in nyc) and brought it to the masses.

Madonna's brother has a book out and he mentioned the "Latin Hip Hop clubs" that Madonna frequented.
