I really don't use IM to meet people. I have it to chat with friends who are out of state.

both of these guys messaged me.

I also have my IM listed on a gay pride site, where a lot of teens go. I've received a few messages from them, asking for advice on things. If I can help them stay safe, and avoid some pitfalls, it's worth it to have the IM systems.

Some people are just plain desperate lol. Those are the ones who don't have any class.
 
Which is why I have a perverted idiots section on my buddy list...that way, I remember why I blocked them...I send them one final message saying "Congratulations, you have just made my perverted idiots list and are now blocked. Bye-bye." Soon after final message is sent, I block them.
