I don't think they stole the freestly sound at all, nor were they really freestyle artists. I believe they did Club/Dance. Running turned into an instant dance classic. Yet they remind me of British dance bands. Do you take Art of Noise for Freestyle artists? Secret Society? Malcolm Mclaren? Think sort of gave me a Duran Duran feel. I don't know the 80's were as confusing as the genders
 
throw them with DEPECHE MODE & ERASURE. To the DIE-HARD INFORMATION SOCIETY fans (they are referred to as INFO-SOC now) the music is SYNTH-POP, not FREESTYLE.
 
Many synth pop, electro groups from the early 80's threw out the idea for freestyle. Shannon is not Freestyle, but her sound sparked the idea for freestyle. It's the same with rock; Jimi Hendrex, and The Who were not the original Heavy Metal artist, but their sound gave Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and 80's Thrash metal, and Hair bands the idea for metal.

In fact, I believe the Latin Rascals were behind their 1st single Running (correct me if I'm wrong)...so I'd consider it true freestyle.

Many Euro groups in the 80s were trying to go for that "Miami" sound (I'm quoting them here), which is why some snigles from the Pet Shop Boyz, Cause & Effect & even Duran Duran have a taste of Freestyle. I personally love my Duran Duran Greatest Hits CD!!!

THATS NOT A GOOD REASON, NO OFFENSE. THE LATIN RASCALS WERE BEHIND SOME FAT BOYS AND BEASTIE BOYS SONGS, SO ARE THEY FREESTYLE TOO? UNDER YOUR ASSUMPTION, THEY WOULD BE TOO. NOT TRYING TO START WITH YOU HERE. JUST POINTING OUT THAT SOMETHING DOESNT HAVE TO BE FREESTYLE BECAUSE OF WHO MADE, WROTE IT OR SANG IT.

So if they wanted the "maimi" sound... WHy did they get "New Yorkers" and thier NY sound?
 
believe it or not but a lot of freestyle artist we been interviewing for our documentary consider Information society freestyle. when asked "what were some of your favorite freestyle artist?" they always mention them in there.....
I always considered them to be more synth pop/dance/freestylish group but they did have a strong influence in the freestyle scene, especially when they played at the first freestyle club in the bronx, sal's devils nest. i heard they performed there many times through out the years along with some of our favorite freestyle artist. actually sa-fires first club performance was at the devils nest with informantion society. plus paul robb from information society produced Noel's "silent morning" and also nocera. they also used india as backup vocalist in some of their tracks, with remixes and production by the latin rascals, joey gardner and little louie vega so they were a big part of that freestyle era.

True just like No Doubt is currently haveing an influence on crossover hip hop. Althought they started as a SKA band and went Pop and now ?. A genre embraces' what they consider hot and the running track was simply that. But I would not consider them freestyle artists. Just Freestyle fans loved that song.

Dance music has soo much gray area that its almost impossible to define... unless an artist claims themselves to be a freestyle artists its really hard to distinguish which really are. Take for example techno music.... i mean, theres house, funk, trance, jungle, etc etc... and while each has distinct characteristics, they all overlap somehow... same thing with dance music that is accompanied with lyrics... theres some stuff people don't consider freestyle, that i consider "new school" freestyle. a lot of which has the house beat in the background.... then theres a lot of remixed songs that are put with a dance beat, that if were originally made as the remix could easily be confused as a freestyle song....
all in all, its hard as hell to tell anymore...
thats why we love our oldies so much.

I definitely consider "Information" a freestyle group. In reality, they're New Wave but that term died in the early 90s. And i don't consider them Retro (which is the term widely used here in S. Fla) because the beat is simply not one of FS. Plus Paul Robb, along with Roman Ricardo, produced "Silent Morning".

I love Information Society!!!! "Running" is a song that embodies Freestyle--pounding beats along with heavy synthesisers and romantic lyrics. What a track!!! "What's on your mind (Pure Energy)" is a good track.

I believe Paul Robb has produced other FS tracks as well.

The group reminds me of When in Rome (The Promise) & London Exchange (Memories of you)

I think Secret is retro, while Information is FS. I think the difference is in the beat

Anyway, just wanted to Information---definitely FS.

true, but they have a legion of die-hard fans that laugh at the idea that they are even considered "freestyle". we dont know them as well as their devoted fans. i got bashed at a INFO-SOC site for even mentioning any association with "freestyle". They also toured with NOCERA years ago.
 
not to argue with MARLON also, just because they performed at the DEVILS NEST doesnt qualify them as "freestyle". I have see groups like RUN DMC, ONYX, CHEAP TRICK & BIOHAZARD perform in clubs where "freestyle" artists also performed at here on long island, and im sure it goes the same for many clubs throughout the world.

Also, "Running" appears on Tommy Boy's "Freestyle's Greatest Beats" series.

No offence taken. The song Running has a DEFINITE Freestyle sound. I know the Latin Rascals have done old school rap & even some house...No, I don't consider it "Freestyle" just because THEY did it!

My sister has the Pet Shop Boys greatest hits....in it there are some liner notes they wrote themselves. Their songs such as What Have I Done To Deserve It were in fact aiming for a "Miami" sound (I'm paraphrasing THEM here). The "Miami" sound was the more happier/nice lyrics you here in songs by Stevie B. & Exposé. Something similar was said on the Erasure greatest hits CD! I know the Latin Rascals are NY writers/singers/producers so believe me, I ain't taking that away from them!

InSoc can be classed in a number of convenient genre pigeonholes, depending
on album... 'Information Society' is probably best suited to Synth Pop,
'Hack' is Synth Pop with some Industrial overtones, 'Peace & Love, Inc.' is
light Industrial and 'Don't Be Afraid' is Industrial/Darkwave...

<rant> Genres are basically a load of crap, devised by the music industry to
pigeonhole artists into a neat, prepackaged, easy to swallow group for the
mindless music buying masses...

I've been involved in the whole genre argument relating to other artists
that I like (namely Orbital) and a lot of the so called IDM (Intelligent
Dance Music) acts which I believe the American music promoters simply label
as Electronica, which encompasses such a broad spectrum of groups such as
The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Underworld, Aphex Twin, Autechre,
Plaid, Boards of Canada, Bola, Monolake etc. and yet a lot of these acts
have nothing in common with each other and all have their own, unique
styles...

This is just an English point of view, where genres are used far too
frequently, especially in the electonic dance music market where there's a
separate genre tag for almost every record released! </rant>

this is wat happens wen i leave for a few days!!!....okie dokie..my turn...i def think that informations society is a freestyle group but they did not stay there....they managed to do other types of tracks that included an 80's sound....to be honest...there are a lot of groups in the music industry that have a freestyle sound but may not be considered freestyle....info-soc just falls in there somewhere...but if they ask me...i would def say that they were freestyle!!!....by the way...their track.."think"...has a great freestyle feel...like running and whats on ur mind (pure energy)
