...u cant just read sumthing and know how to mix ..it takes lots of practice and skill...it seems like matching beats is easy right?..wrong!...my advice is just practice =)
I am a self taught deejay. I had no other dee jays inspire me except for the ones on the radio. I asked at the local record store what I needed to mixx as a deejay & I went out & bought it. Thinking that thats all there was to it. I started mixxing house before anything so it was basically easy & took me about 5 days to teach myself how to mixx. But I would get so frustrated when I started to try to mix freestyle because I was so used to the beat, high hat, beat, high hat. I was trying to follow the beat beat beat beat beat in freestyle, until I slapped myself & started counting the high hat instead. So basically what you do is go in counts of 4 but paying more attention to the high hat or symbol following it in 16 beat sessions. The second beat is what I now follow, instead of all the other beat.
I would strongly suggest practicing with house beats. Especially the newer progressive house, its the easiest to mix by far in my opinion. Freestyle beats can be very hard for new dj.
Following the high hat (2nd beat) is much easier to use when still learning to beatmix. But once you got it down pat, use the 1st beat (bass beat) of a 16 beat sequence. You'll be able to accomplish more. Its a good dj habit to follow the first beat.
Try getting 2 of the same records, and practice matching them up without looking at the + / -
Try to mix records in the same key.
Practice with house music, it's much easier to beatmix.
Don't get frustrated with mixing freestyle, it takes a long time to perfet that..... If you ever really do
Like what Johnny Budz is saying is oh so true, you have to start to get familiar with what you are listening to. My suggestion to add to your learning of beat-mixing is always start with the pitch at 0 on the first song.
On a side note, have you ever noticed deejays moving their head up and down...they are following the beat and is another good tip, to get the rhythm.
go to the kenny section and check out some diff beats... and then go form there... use ur own taste and screw around... i mean what do u use to make your beats.... i prefer the new yamaha djx-2, it works greqat for beginners like myself.... and i made three new songs already... just trying to get the vocals together...
