Perspo, that was spoken Perfectly!

you can only get so far away from the basics

:: thumbs up ::

thank you rolando and perspo,
two great points i've been trrying to make forever,
1. can't go to far from the basics
2. don't call another type of dance music freestyle when it's not.

I agree with cafreestyler:
1. can't go to far from the basics
2. don't call another type of dance music freestyle when it's not.

True, it would not really be "Freestyle" if the music and lyrical content drifted away from the theme's that this form of music is known for. However, it is good to experiment and try new things as long as freestyle fans can recoginize that it's still freestyle not house, trance, or pop, and as the fan base grows(enveloping new fans), they can be able to appreciate & embrace the old skool sounds(the roots, heart, and soul) that we have grown to love so much.

Two great example's of the progress for the sound of freestyle in the new millenium:
1-"I do both jay & jane" by Larissa(the beat was tight as hell, you can't deny)
2-"Damaged" by Plummet

They might be considered breakbeat to the new generation, but it's freestyle, the vocals & lyrics tell the story. 😀

i think Jay & Jane could maybe be considered freestyle (i agree, the beat is tight as hell). the only thing missing is the traditional love theme found in a typical freestyle song. but the beat and sound are freestyle. i think freestyle can use lyrics a little different from the hardcore love lyrics, and still be freestyle. the plummet song i think sounds more breakbeat though. just my opinion.
i think other artists out there that have a more progressive sound but are still freestyle are like Angelina, Rosalinda, Jocelyn Enriquez.

Well I think the "I do both Jay & Jane" song was about love haha, she just chose to swing on two sides of the fence. :blah I think a lot of the song's that are coming out today with similar styles are hybrids of freestyle. Some single releases will label a remix as "Breakbeat mix" etc, but it's usually along the vibe similar to freestyle, I almost think it's a marketing stradegy to make people think it's a new style of music when it's roots probably originated from freestyle. 😀 Freestyle probably sounds dated to some record companies....? 😕

If.............I think Freestyle is not taken seriously as a genre of music. Too many labels out there are basically putting out crap just to make a quick buck. That is damaging to Freestyle. Bottom line. I'm tired of artists remaking the same songs that were hot back in the late 80's and early 90's. Be original. Do your own thing. Why do you gotta remake a song that was a classic. Your killing it. I'm tired of cheesey covers as well. Songs that are not originally Freestyle are being remade to sound like Freestyle. That's so wack. Artists, that were back in the late 80's and 90's- stop singing the same songs at every concert and club. Put out some new shit. Safire and Cynthia- props to you. But try and cover the new material. Give "virgin" ears a taste of what Freestyle can be. Promote yourselves. There is a market out there. College radio stations are willing to play the material if they are given an oppurtunity to sample it. A lot of the artists are selling themselves short. Write your own material, perfect your voice, and write about some real shit-filter out all the love and heartbreak. LaRissa- props to her as well. She likes girls and guys. That I can relate to.

yeah i guess its about love in a way. i totally agree that alot of music out there is really mostly freestyle but being labeled as breakbeat. that is so true.

i don't have too much of a problem with SOME freestyle using other themes besides love, but at the same time listen some of the hottest music out today- r&b, hip hop, pop, even house and trance have lyrics dealing with love too, so is it really needed?
i think more important things are money, promotion, quality, and paying off program directors.

bugging the radio stations

calling % sending e-mails to the radio stations and requesting/demanding for freestyle to be played, although it hasn't worked for me. 🙁

i started a letter writing thing...but hardly any "freestyle fans" even joined it...so i say they deserve what they get when it comes to radio play!!!!🙄

MTV - TRL

Aside from the Dance Radio stations, a mainstream radio station, even a rhythmic one, isnt going to play that much Freestyle, no matter how much you request it.

And we all know that MTV hasnt played a Freestyle video in over a decade!

HOWEVER.....
MTV swears that it will play the Top 10 most requested videos of the day on TRL. And a group of people had them put their money where their mouth is, by flooding the phone lines and the emails with requests for New Kids On The Block.... And this was about 2 years ago.

Maybe we could do the same thing with a Freestyle song. But it would have to be a well thought of campaign, and it would take months of planning. It would have to be one of the classics that had a good video! Not just a video, but a good video. No room for politics... No back scratching here. It would have to be one video only, that is the only way it would work.

A few suggestions would be:

Stevie B.
TKA
Rockell
K7

What have we got to lose.
