Alright. I was just thinking that we had enough talented people here to put together a great Freestyle song that would get airplay. Then, I just read a post by SantanaTwins about Price and Positioning which made a lot of sense - which goes to show that Freestyle wont be back on the airwaves any time soon...

So. That brings me to an alternative idea.. How much does it cost to start a radio station? Couldn't everyone who's really serious here put money together to get something going?

At the least, we could get a really good internet station going that can be played with the new satallite technology in cars. And maybe from there, if things go well, we can get a station on the air.. I'm sure we could sell some minor advertising or whatever.

But can't this be done? Can't we all go in on equal amounts to put something together? Not necessarily to make money. It doesn't need to be a profitable deal - just enough to keep the station going. It would certainly be nice to bring Freestyle back to the airwaves.

I can't stop thinking that this can be done... Any thoughts, suggestions, criticisms, ideas? Anything? Please reply...

This idea has occurred to me more than once. I was thinking of just putting a dance station rather than a just a whole station dedicated to freestyle just because itll get more attn. and ratings rather than it being just strictly freestyle. I was thinking of playing all the different kinds of house, trance, freestyle that doesnt normally get played on radio stations nowadays. It'll be everything basically. Anything thats dance. But thats one thing, there would be a hell of a lot more freestyle played once this babys up. And im not talking about no 2 to 3 hour shows or anything. I mean all day!! along with some house and techno.

Exactly...

Originator.. You're exactly right on track. I didn't really mean strictly Freestyle. Anything that has a beat you can dance to. That included all the styles you mentioned. This really needs to happen. If not on the air, than on satallite.. If not that, then on the net. We just need some kind of radio station that we can control.

http://www.wktu.com (We Kick The Underground) had something like this but their site hasn't been updated in years.. If we could even get something like that going, it would be really cool. I'd be up for building the website if anyone could find out more about starting the station...

Hey Sal

I've often thought of doing this, but I have no funds to invest. I'm working on getting myself out of debt.

I've also thoght of clubs that should give some space to a record store in the club. When artists performed there, their records could be displayed so sales would go up.

Well Sal, starting a station would be impossible.
Buying a station is the only way, but you'll need some serious money, especially to buy a station in New York City (market #1) or any other major market. I can give you some sample figures of stations in Sacramento where I live (market 27)...(the station that I worked at was sold for a bargain of $8 million dollars, one of the cheapest sales in Sacramento, because the owners needed to get some money as soon as possible, plus our station did not have the strongest signal or best equipment). An example of a major station transaction is $25 million to purchase a station in Sacramento back in 1996 (KWOD 106.5). So a figure MUCH higher than that would occur in say New York City.

FROM ONE SAL TO ANOTHER (JUST A SUGGESTION, DON'T EVERYONE GET IN AN UPROAR)
HERE'S A SUGGESTION HOW ABOUT A PIRATE RADIO STATION? OR JUST A STATION ON LIVE 365.COM. I KNOW THEY HAVE A LOT OR MAYBE BETTER YET WE NEED SOMETHING TO LET US BE ABLE TO PLAY LIVE 365 IN OUR CARS THATS NOT EXPENSIVE AND DOSEN'T REQUIRE A COMP.

That would be fun. Just don't get caught or you'll have your equipment seized and maybe fined. I know some people tried or want to do a pirate in Sacramento now that our dance station is gone. Careful though!

THEY PASSED SOME TYPE OF LAW A FEW YEARS AGO THAT ALLOWS YOU TO PIRATE YOUR OWN STATION! OF COURSE, THERE IS A TON OF RULES!

Here's another figure I saw on a recent transaction in Denver (market #23), an FM station was sold for $88 million. If I won the lottery I still wouldn't be able to afford a radio station.

everyone on cf needs to win the lottery then!!! lol

i suggested everyone no matter where ur location was to write a letter to ktu telling them to keep up thier play of freestyle and to support the new school freestyle...i even set up a po box that people could write too...however no one came out to do it...the cost of a stamp was to much to invest in freestyle for some people...so dont even get ur hopes up!!!!!!:blah

Hey I just happen to have 100 million dollars!

I'll open a station... I wish. I can't believe how expensive it is. I would have never guessed. I guess even if everyone on this site contributes 100 dollars it still wont be enough. Well for the record, if I do happen to come across 100 million dollars, whoever wants a job at New Yorks new club/freestyle radio station can have one. Ha ha ha ha ha... I guess we should look for a new plan to get Freestyle back on the radio.

It's time to take it back to the under ground

If you live near a big college that has a radio station, or know anybody that goes to the big colleges. Heres an idea. Do what WNYU and WCRX in chicago is doing get freestyle on college radio. Get them to do long shows on the station for like 2-5 hours. Then you can hear most of the new artist with a little of the Veterans. I know some peeps who go to NYU. I'm trying to get them to infulence their station to make their freestyle show longer. All of you who know of big freestyle shows should go post them up at NYU, St Johns, Queens College, Fordham Univ and even Seton Hall( even though their station plays heavy metal/mainstream rock). College radio would get freestyle going!! It did the same for alternative in the early 90's(which sadly that and gangsta rap knocked freestyle/dance off the radio in the early 90's). I'm trying to do the same thing here in DC/MD/VA. Al I need is some TKA, Safire, Ashley, etc posters to post up at my school(Montgomery Community College/Takoma Park Campus), University of Maryland/Terp Land!!, Georgetown University, etc.. How bout that guys!

Man I have thought about having my own station for years. I thought about the call letters and motto too. Funny this thread came my way cause I was just recently telling someone about this. To have a large audience it would make sense to me to play Club music as well as Disco which is to thank for our dance music today and yes Freestyle too! Of course Freestyle would be 90 percent of the airplay.I would even plant the aerial in the the Bronx where Freestyle was born!
"This is Freejack (that's me) and you're listening to WDNC (DaNCe) New Yorks's #1 Freestyle station where we only play disco classics, yesterday and todays Freestyle and Club music" absolutely no R&B!!
Anthony A, Tommy & Nick if you guys are reading this you could be my morning crew LMao. Now back to reality>> if anyone here does have the funds put me down for the graveyard shift cause I'll "KeeP ~SpiNNiN~ that Freestyle"® all night!By the way what where yesterdays winning numbers?? :lilsuzy

I certainly have the radio voice for it. Lemme know if this ever happens. 😛 Pretty much, every time I've spoken on a microphone - be it an intercom or speaker phone, I've been told I have a perfect voice for radio. As a matter of fact, JackG mentioned it to me as well. heh So let's get something going! Alright?!

Realisitically.. It would be majorly difficult. I'll certainly have atleast a million dollars to spend at some point in the next few years - but Holy God! That wouldn't even be a drop in a bucket. Would it?

Wishfull thinking you all, easier said than done. It would be nice though, if there were a station that would play all the underground dance music that doesn't get airplay by these mainstream stations
