I Think This Station Suck!!!

Pulse 87 is the only one attempting to "breathe life back" into the carcass called New York Radio these days. If you think you can do a better job, why not ORGANIZE and create a BETTER station yourselves??

I hear you...and there are people that love the station, no argument there. It's definitely a step up from 'KTU, that's for sure. Is it everything? No. But compared to what we've had before (and frankly, I blame that past programming mentality for "brainwashing" people to stay stuck with the old) it's one step up.

Maybe it's my mentality regarding dance music all these years, but if I ever wanted to create a dance music radio station, I could NOT do it in New York. There's too much politics going on along with too much segmentations within (the 4 "schools" - worldly/Manhattan, outer borough, "soccer mom" & GLBT). I'd rather go somewhere and break out dance music to a crowd whereas I can break out NEW, to a mindset that isn't rooted on "history".....like Providence, RI...just to PROVE to people that current dance works and could be financially viable. It would sound more like XM's BPM in that fashion....some pop, but not as much as Pulse 87 does. Dance music from the 20th century would not fit into the equation.

I agree with LegalDeeJay on what he said. Terrestrial radio is being phased out because the competition from web streamers offering superior programming, most of which is commercial free and is not programmed by huge media conglomerates based in bumblefuck usa who don't know the NY dance market like you hear on today's terrestrial radio is making people consider other options beyond FM.

They did do a recent "Music Director" survey so I would tend to think some of the feedback on that has made the station aware on new adds.

Love or hate...it's still better than 'KTU ever was. And looking at the "big picture" here, you WANT this station to do well. If dance music can garner the attention of the "suits" out there to take a chance with it in differing cities, then it's a win-win for fans, artists, and the business of radio.

Just an opinion....

Bro , you are going over the top with a statement like that ....
KTU "was" badass in its prime and its still not a bad station at all ....
Pulse has a long way to go before it can even start to claim such a thing.
For starters , until Pulse can pump out better reception , it will never ever be able to make such a claim ...

Maybe it's because I went to Toronto a lot during the 90's that I was "spoiled" hearing new music out of radio station Energy 108, but.....'KTU (as in the 103.5 version) could have done A HELLUVA LOT MORE back in those days breaking out current dance. And many a times, they were either late in the game or avoided things.

It was GREAT for freestyle though....and that was the problem right there. They definitely played the well known classics, that Hot 97 broke out when the music was new, but did nothing new for freestyle either! Yet they 'KTU knew that no one wanted to let go of the classics so they stuck with it as it was 1988.

Regarding Pulse, you either like it or hate it....I'm not going to push anyone to support it if they don't feel comfortable doing so. Terrestrial radio in general is at a crossroads and in another 10 years or so, we may look back and laugh at all of this when we're listening to Internet streams in our cars. You have Freestyle.fm now....me, I'll tune in to Music One.

Over the top? Perhaps. Not going to argue with anyone. Not too long ago we were talking about Party 105 (when Andre was there) and the fact that they barely had a signal...but people generally loved that station.

Agreed....

I'm with Frankie this station's no good! Pure Pulse Nonsense!

Greetings,

I'm a newcomer to this forum, but not new to DJing.
I'm listening to Pulse for the first time via Internet because I now live in Easton, PA...

...and if you want to hear some "really bad radio", take I-78 West from the Holland Tunnel till you hit PA...

...and bring your MP3 player because you're gonna really need it... 🙂

I'm a native New Yorker who grew up in The Bronx (E 163rd St) who also lived in Bay Ridge Bklyn for close to 20 years before heading out to PA.

In between that I lived in Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune, NC while my old man served in the Navy.

While in NC, I DJ'ed at the local clubs in town as well as on base during the 80's before heading back.

Down there, I brought freestyle, disco, & house to the military personnel out there. I was probably one of the first.

Since I started listening today, Pulse is playing some decent music; but it still remains a mere shadow of what it could be. I'm with hopes that this will improve.

Plainly put; we're spoiled, and with good reason...

Back in the day, we had pioneers like Frankie Crocker, Shep Pettibone, Paco, The Latin Rascals, and Tony Humphries (to name a few) taking chances and redefining the rules by bringing the music you would never hear.

The continuity between these pioneers on the radio along with those in the clubs such as Larry Levan, David Mancuso, Francois K, Nick Siano, Jellybean, and Eddie Rivera are the reasons why there is such a high standard above what is being heard now.

This remained the case when I returned to NY to Louie Vega in The Devil's Nest as well as Tony Rocca in 1018 (yep, I remember you there and at the Palladium).

If you can think back during the days of the Supermix, Kiss Mastermixes, and even when WBLS did the 107.5 hours of non-stop mixing (even some being broadcast live from the Paradise Garage), you can understands the standards set as well as the expectation.

Anything aside from that will be regarded to as "cheesy".

With respect to you, Metro NY Dance Radio Coal; surveys are based on demographics, and the only people who care about demographics are suits; nobody else...

Corporate Radio hasn't a clue, and at this point they never will...

You have better chances hitting Lotto and Powerball at the same time before that ever happens. 🙂

As long as they can replicate and regenerate formats in "cookie cutter" fashion for the sake of revenue generation, that's all that matters to them and that's all that's taking place.

And you can't tell me that I'm wrong because it shows today; and that's all that they have proven through recent years.

Unless you have a program director with the soul equivalent to someone like Frankie Crocker, that survey holds no water.

Because if it did, the formats of today's dance music wouldn't be questioned.
True, there's always room for improvement and nothing is ever perfect.

But when you've already heard the best since "back in the day" and compare it to what's being heard now; the substance is missing...

Alas, time will tell... 😉

..otherwise great post

THE STATION STILL SUCK!!!!

Okay. How about some specifics on what exactly the problems are with Pulse 87 (Tony, I know your view and we've spoken but I want to give the floor to Frankie Cutlass here).

Just saying "because it does" regarding why you feel the station "sucks", is not a valid reason and doesn't hold weight to the argument here.

So what is it exactly, the music?, the station's issues? (not a strong signal), the on-air personalities? What exactly is it?

Okay, I might as well open it up to everyone. If you were Joel Salkowitz (the program director of Pulse 87...he WAS the PD of Hot 103/97 during the dance music era)...

1. What would YOU do to address the concerns of those that are complaining?

2. What tracks would you add/delete on the rotation. Be specific. Saying "EVERYTHING" is not a valid answer.

3. Who would you hire (and be non-biased about this since most people are going to say that they should be the one working there) and who would you fire?

4. What would you do that Pulse isn't currently doing? And how would you go about it?

So, here ya go.

they do not suck!!!! Ok so the reception blows in some parts of Jersey but I'm in Bergen co. so I get great reception and I listen all the time. They are way better than KTU...KTU is so old. Pulse is especially good late Saturday night before going out =)

I heard they might leave 87.7Mhz

Where would they go if they did?

Hello...pulse 87....put Nu-image Music And A-mess Music On Your Rotation . I Guarantee The Popularity Of Your Station Will Grow 100%.

That Should Solve The Problem...wink Wink...

Is Pulse 87 one of those stations that broadcasts out of a high school or college campus? I've never heard anything decent at 87 or 88 on the dial other than that crumby broadcasting that the colleges and universities do. I tried tuning in to the station myself a few times but couldn't pick it up at all, and I live in northern NJ (Morris County). I think I checked out their website a few times, but I never actually heard the station.
