Greetings,
I'm a newcomer to this forum, but not new to DJing.
I'm listening to Pulse for the first time via Internet because I now live in Easton, PA...
...and if you want to hear some "really bad radio", take I-78 West from the Holland Tunnel till you hit PA...
...and bring your MP3 player because you're gonna really need it... 🙂
I'm a native New Yorker who grew up in The Bronx (E 163rd St) who also lived in Bay Ridge Bklyn for close to 20 years before heading out to PA.
In between that I lived in Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune, NC while my old man served in the Navy.
While in NC, I DJ'ed at the local clubs in town as well as on base during the 80's before heading back.
Down there, I brought freestyle, disco, & house to the military personnel out there. I was probably one of the first.
Since I started listening today, Pulse is playing some decent music; but it still remains a mere shadow of what it could be. I'm with hopes that this will improve.
Plainly put; we're spoiled, and with good reason...
Back in the day, we had pioneers like Frankie Crocker, Shep Pettibone, Paco, The Latin Rascals, and Tony Humphries (to name a few) taking chances and redefining the rules by bringing the music you would never hear.
The continuity between these pioneers on the radio along with those in the clubs such as Larry Levan, David Mancuso, Francois K, Nick Siano, Jellybean, and Eddie Rivera are the reasons why there is such a high standard above what is being heard now.
This remained the case when I returned to NY to Louie Vega in The Devil's Nest as well as Tony Rocca in 1018 (yep, I remember you there and at the Palladium).
If you can think back during the days of the Supermix, Kiss Mastermixes, and even when WBLS did the 107.5 hours of non-stop mixing (even some being broadcast live from the Paradise Garage), you can understands the standards set as well as the expectation.
Anything aside from that will be regarded to as "cheesy".
With respect to you, Metro NY Dance Radio Coal; surveys are based on demographics, and the only people who care about demographics are suits; nobody else...
Corporate Radio hasn't a clue, and at this point they never will...
You have better chances hitting Lotto and Powerball at the same time before that ever happens. 🙂
As long as they can replicate and regenerate formats in "cookie cutter" fashion for the sake of revenue generation, that's all that matters to them and that's all that's taking place.
And you can't tell me that I'm wrong because it shows today; and that's all that they have proven through recent years.
Unless you have a program director with the soul equivalent to someone like Frankie Crocker, that survey holds no water.
Because if it did, the formats of today's dance music wouldn't be questioned.
True, there's always room for improvement and nothing is ever perfect.
But when you've already heard the best since "back in the day" and compare it to what's being heard now; the substance is missing...
Alas, time will tell... 😉
