As of 6:30 tonight..Here is the latest update!

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Hurricane Dennis has turned into a dangerous Category 3 hurricane and could strengthen even further before making landfall in central Cuba Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Forecasters predict the hurricane to approach the Keys to the west Saturday, intensify over the Gulf of Mexico, and make landfall near Mobile, Alabama, about midday Monday.

The storm has maximum sustained winds near 115 mph (185 kph) with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center, the National Hurricane Center said.

It was moving northwest at about 15 mph.

Hurricane warnings are in effect for the lower Florida Keys, much of Cuba, the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

The rest of the Keys and the southern Florida peninsula are either under a tropical storm warning or a hurricane watch.

Tourists in the Keys have been ordered to leave, an emergency official for Monroe County said.

Monroe County Emergency Manager Billy Wagner said that trailers and recreational vehicles; campgrounds and state parks all come under the evacuation order.

He said more evacuation orders might be necessary, depending upon the storm's track.

The storm is expected to dump five to 10 inches of rain over Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands, with 15 inches possible in southeast Cuba's Sierra Maestra Mountains. The heavy rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, forecasters warned.

At 5 p.m. ET, Hurricane Dennis was centered about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Cabo Cruz, Cuba and about 125 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of Guantanamo, Cuba.

The U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay has shut down its airport, cancelled boat and ferry services and prepared an evacuation plan, but would not provide details.

The detention facility there houses roughly 520 suspects from 44 countries, most of them captured during the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan against the al Qaeda terrorist network and its allies.

Strong winds with gusts up to 40 miles per hour are blowing at the base.

NASA has no plans to delay the shuttle launch planned for next Wednesday, said a Kennedy Space Center spokesman. Launching Discovery would end a nearly two-and-a-half-year shuttle hiatus that followed the Columbia disaster.
