i got into it listening to wild 94.9 in san francisco playing the west coast progressive freestyle and old school freestyle, and ksfm 102.5 in sacramento playing some too. but wild 94.9 always had the newest songs and put on some dope freestyle concerts.

I got into freestyle cause of my older cousin. There's a 5 year age difference btwn us, so when freestyle was blowing up in the 80's and I was 8 or so, my cousin was around 13 and cause I wanted to be cool and be just like her, I got into it. And from that point on, I was hooked!

Power 96 in Miami use to be the Sh%$ when it came to Freestyle. I used to listen to Jammin Johnny spin the hottest hits. Thats when I fell in love with TKA, The Cover Girls, and george LaMond. But before that I was very much into Expose. I still love the "Exposure" album, its one of my all time favs.

IOU is the first freestyle song I remember listening to way back in 1983...back when you were allowed to blast your boombox on the subway LOL!!

My cousin's fault! 🙂 Kept on playin it in the ride and got me hooked! LOL! He didn't know any artist names nor songs but had a bunch of mixes and stuff!

I first got into Freestyle in the early 80's when I heard Shannon "Give me tonight" but it was not called Freestyle back then, so I guest the "first time" was in 84' or 85' when I heard X-posed (now Expose) "Point of no Return".

I got into freestyle back in the 80's when I was in elementary school...it was the music that was in style...all the parties had freestyle...people would have their boomboxes pumping the music out in the block...those were the days...I've been hooked ever since!!!!

probably about 5-6 years ago back in high school had a buddy we called him Turkino..biggest freestyle person i had ever met..i never knew what freestyle was till he played it in his car on lunch.got hooked right away!

How I got into Freestyle...

It all started back when I was a young girl living in the projects in the Bronx. I was as young as 3 or 4 when I started hearing freestyle music and I'm talking about the earlier forms of freestyle music from Afrika Bambatta and these people (I forgot their names) but they were part of Tommy Boy Records and they came out with this song called "Play At Your Own Risk".

Now you can tell I am truly an 80s child lol.

Anyway, but that's when it started. My uncle would play records of them. And then I knew some teenagers and other kid who were my age that I would hang out with from like 8 - 11 years old and we all would just hang out (at the benches or in the big parks) and they'd have the boom box thingy (ya'll remember the boom box lol) and would just play the music. I was a kid back then when I got into the music, so I really was not able to go to any of the concerts happening back then (I was too frikin young lol). They would also have blockparty's where I came from and they would have the music blasting.

I would then hear of artists like Noel, Cynthia, Johnny O, Stevie B, etc. etc. you name them and I listened to them.

I am 26 now, and my love for freestyle music never did leave me. I still listen to it today. Freestyle music, I think, has also paved the way (in a way) for House, Trance and Techno music that plays today. I also got into trance/techno and house music because of it. And I think it was because of the fact that music such as these had the nice beats....I mean you listen to the lyrics and all, but what it comes down to is good music. You can DANCE to it.

So that's how I got into the music, I was as young as 3 or 4 years old living in the projects and young people who I knew around me got me hooked on the music. 😉

OMG you cannot forget Lyme, that band was great! I didn't even hear of them until like 1997 when I was a senior in High School in the Bronx lol. KTU got some of us young teens hooked onto their music, so blame them! LOL The two favorites are "Angel Eyes" and "Babe, We're Gonna Love Tonight". They also paved the way for freestyle because their music was electronic and sort of different from the typical disco dance scene back in the day.

I was born in 83....luckily I have lots of older cousins that used to jam to freestyle around me when I was little...then it all dissapeared until KTU played it again around 96...It all came back to me then...love my freestyle!!

my history of freestyle

I got my first taste of freestyle back in the 1980's listenig to stuff like Madonna and Jellybean's "Sidewalk Talk" and Alisha's "Baby Talk". From then on I just kept looking out for new stuff. Later on I just kept looking out for freestyle from MicMac, TiAmo, Metropolitan,Viper, Cutting and Tazmania records because I knew they were putting out some awesome stuff. My favorite freestyle record of all time which I finally have ownership of is Charlie Babie "In the name of love". Keep freestyle alive and God bless. djantonio72
