I WOULD SAY YOU DO A FEW SHOWS GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE THEN START PUTTING OUT TAPES OR MAKE SOME TAPES SEND THEM OUT TO THE CLUBS LET THE CLUB OWNERS PROMOTERS HERE WHAT YOU GOT AND TAKE IT FROM HERE IF THERE FEELING YOUR STYLO THEY WILL HIT YOU BACK 😀
I've been in the game for over 10+ years man. I've done radio, mobile, clubs, & raves. I've played out of town, out of state, and even out of the country. I know how hard it is to get in the scene. I've been there and done that. It's going to take time and patience. A lot has to do w/ who you know. Make them demos. Keep up w/ the latest music. In the meantime though my best advice to you would be to go out to the clubs early. Learn the format. Get to know the staff.
Make friends w/ the DJ's. Don't tell them right away you need a job because they will probably become defensive. I know I would. Other DJ's are probably your best bet being that they are already in the scene and can introduce you to others who may be hiring or even put in a good word for you at their residency. I know a lot of times I'm having to decline gigs and pass them over to my fellow DJ friends (too bad you're not in San Antonio). Networking is a wonderful thing.
Meet the managers and the owners. Don't let them know right away your a dj and want a job, because chances are they feel really comfortable w/ their resident DJ already. Once you've built a rapport w/ them, bring it up. Tell them you you're a DJ and have a demo and give it to them and that if they ever need a back up dj or someone to fill in on an off night that you would be more than willing to do it.
In the meantime practice, practice, and practice some more. DJing in a bedroom is one thing but DJing in front of a crowd at a club is way different. Practice your programming and such. I'm gonna cut it short here cuz I can go on and on. If you would like some more pointers or advice, feel free to e-mail me at djreneg@djreneg.com or you can instant message me on AOL/AIM/Yahoo at djreneg. Whatever happens Brah, good luck!!!
Make the mix TAPES/CDS take 'em 2 a show & give them away w/ your information on how to get more 😉 I know of a few that have made it big by doing that!
