FreeStyle Support

Here is how I do it:

(1) I buy FreeStyle vinyl at my local DJ shops. The older (out-of-print) stuff I get from other hard-core collectors.

(2) I buy FreeStyle CD albums and singles online (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Tower, etc.), although, sometimes, I will also buy these CD's in person, at the large stores (The Wherehouse and such).

(3) I compile and distribute (sometimes for free) CD's of rare & hard-to-get FreeStyle songs, formerly available on vinyl or obscure commercial CD's.

My take on the whole MP3 debate is that if your FreeStyle collection mostly consists of songs on MP3, without also having the original vinyl or CD recordings, then you are a leech and a loser.

EVERYONE HAS ALREADY MENTIONED HOW I SUPPORT FREESTYLE. FROM THE PURCHASING, BLASTING OUT LOUD, PROMOTING IT, REQUESTING IT AT CLUBS AND STATIONS. MY NEXT MOVE WILL BE A FEATURED EVENT COMING SOON.

Mr. Parker

1.- I visit my retail stores for stock ? If out I talk to the store manager, and let them know that there out of a title that I'm playing on My show.

2.- I buy a copy for myself

3.- I both back & Front Anounce ALL NEW music

4.- If I get posters in I take them to my Local record store and PUT THEM UP myself, and I can take pictures of it too.

5.- In the past if I had FLYER, I would make bincards out of them and put then in the Freestyle CD section, or by the title of the flyer.

6.- And other stuff too

Any label looking for a marketing rep in the Bay Area??

My Promos

Well unfortunately I'm only 20 so I can't go to none of the real big Freestyle events in clubs cause they're all like 21 and over clubs that won't admit me, but, I found another way.

I blast my music everywhere I go. I don't care if all these people look at me funny. It makes me blast it more. I play freestyle for all my friends and I have gotten so many people into freestyle just by playing the music for them. Everywhere I go I pass out flyers promoting myself and Freestyle mixes I make and also promoting my independent record label. A lot of people have been calling my studio ordering music through me even though most of what they order is old school I still let them listen to some of the new skool so they can catch a feel for it. I try to have everyone out in Boston at least listen to freestyle once. They only way I can catch their attention to freestyle is by passing out those flyers all the time. It's working little by little. My goal is to have people lined up at Tower Records ordering cds through them to stock up on the shelves. Tower's freestyle section was pretty good at first and now it's down to a third of a section.

As for MP3's, I have downloaded a few of them but I mostly own everything in my library. My Cd and Vinyl collection is unrivaled out here in Boston. I would like to see someone have as much as me around here. I don't think MP3's are a bad idea. I like them for the fact that you can have people listen to freestyle and get into it. I have Napster and the only thing I really look for to download are usually old school jamz that came out on vinyls I don't have. I never owned the Foolish Pride Vinyl so I had to download the versions off Napster. I like MP3's personally because I have also been promoting my mixes on Napster as well as remixes I have made on there. It's great here in Boston cause the people who are getting into freestyle just hop on there and download off me and have what they want to sample one of the greatest music genre's ever. After all, if we aren't gonna try everything to promote freestyle what's the use??

JParker

I like your first post and agree with you 100%. Thats the reason we don't go any where. If your an Oldschool artists you have to do new stuf cause if you do new songs your to old to be on stage. And radio don't want old peeps out in the market unless your a veteran. If your new they won't play your stuff because no one has heard from nor you have a Name to back you up ...No Money 😡 .........We need to promote and support everyone in our gene, and make noise with it. Let's school our youngster that there is other music, that Freestyle lives 4 ever, I will bet once they listen to a new track they're going to fall in love our music, most of them know about the oldschool but who doesn't? I mean that how I support Freestyle and never giving up on it cause it's not going to go away. Remenber that......SUPPORT peeps and we should be granted our rewards.....Mad luv

DJMongo1One,

I'm not sure I'm clear on what your saying. You do mixes and people call your studio to order old school songs from you. Are you a retailer, a label doing legitimate compilations or are you selling mix tapes???

I SHOW SUPPORT BY..

I SHOW SUPPORT BY, MOST IMPORTANTLY, GOING EVERY WEEKEND TO THE ONLY CLUB THAT PLAYS OUR MUSIC CONSISTENTLY HERE IN MIAMI......ALCAZABA ON SATURDAY NIGHTS. I ALSO SUPPORT BY BUYING COMPILATIONS AT CARJUL, SPECS, ETC. I THINK THE BEST WAY TO KEEP OUR MUSIC ALIVE IS BY ASKING FOR IT IN THE CLUBS......THE CLUBS THEN ARRANGE CONCERTS.....ADVERTISE ON POWER 96 (VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE POWER MAKES ITS MONEY) WHICH THEN RESULTS IN RADIO AIRPLAY. THIS IS ALL SO CYCLICAL. WE HAVE TO SPEND MONEY ON A STATIONS ADVERTISERS ....I.E. GO THE FREAKING CLUBS THAT PLAY OUR MUSIC. ONCE THE CLUB HAS MADE MONEY FROM US...THEY'LL SPEND ON RADIO ADVERTISING. THE RADIO WILL PLAY THE SAME MUSIC THAT THE CLUB PLAYS TO ATTRACT PATRONS (GUESTS) AND THEN THE CIRLCE STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN. SIMPLE, AIN'T IT????? THEN WHY AREN'T ALL THE FREESTYLE HEADS HERE IN MIAMI AT ALCAZABA ON SATURDAYS??? I HOPE THERE'S A FS CONCERT SOON SO THAT I CAN PROMOTE IT OVER THE INTERNET TO GET AS MANY PEOPLE TO GO. "ES THE CHILD" ARE YOU WITH ME?? BBOY???? ALEX???? DOOS??? Y'ALL ARE WITH ME RIGHT???

That is not what I meant...

Orgntr1 said:
so i guess if i accept a freestyle rarity cd and dont have the songs in their original format then that also makes me a "leech" and a "loser".

Orgntr1,

That is not what I meant, since I was only talking about MP3 FreeStyle files, but if you want to take it that way, then that is on you. If, by getting the FreeStyle Rarities CD, you realize there are some songs of which you would like to own legitimate copies, then I would expect (and hope) you would be motivated enough to track them down and acquire them. I was able to find those types of songs; other interested parties should be able to do the same.

My point is this: If you rely on bootlegged/unauthorized songs or compilations to make your FreeStyle collection impressive, then you are not a true FreeStyle supporter or collector.

P.S. if accepting the CD I sent you bothers you that much, send it back--I won't take offense.

😉

Thanks

JackG,

Thanks for the work you've done to keep the 'Style going. This site is great. Without it, I could not be reading and posting about FreeStyle music. Well, I could do so on another site, but this one (CF) is the best.

JP,

No I'm not a retaile, that's too much freakin money to deal with. I sell mix Cd's that I make myself. But almost everyone asks me for all old school mixes. I don't mind that 80% of the mixes I have made are old school but it gets tiring knowing that the only freestyle anyone knows about is old school. I wish that people would start requesting more new stuff. A couple already have but thats not enough. We need to make freestyle survive and the only way is to have people getting into the new stuff and buying new stuff aswell as the old stuff. Around here in Boston they only sell old school comps and just a few tazmania comps from Metro. That really pisses me off! Hopefully more people will succumb to the new sounds and start remembering the style that the free world fordot. FREESTYLE!

ok, i do like the songs in this compilation and i want to get the copies but the thing is i wont make the artist and producers any money. cuz if i were to go to a record store where they have thousands of used records (and that s how youll usually get rare freestyle stuff.) ill be making the owner of the record store some money, instead of the artist as i intended because this was the only way that i can get the authentic copy. is that what you mean....that if i like a track, that i need to get the actual authentic cd no matter who receives my revenue?
