I WANNA HEAR HOW THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK FELT WHEN HOT 97 DROPPED ITS FREESTYLE AND DANCE MUSIC FORMAT..

YEAH, THE ONLY SHOWS LEFT AT THE TIME WERE THE FRIDAY NIGHT HOT MIX WITH JEFF ROMANOWSKI & THE SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE PARTY WITH GLENN FRISCIA, AND AS THOSE WENT ON THERE WASN'T MUCH FREESTLYE BEING PLAYED...FRANCO IMELLO USE TO PLAY FREESTYLE..

At that point I was already listening to B91 fm, a local radio station put on by some college in Brooklyn. They devoted a lot of time to Freestyle and I can remember my first time hearing, "Happy Day's" by Face. Then I left NYC in 1994 to come to Boston, which played nothing for Freestyle at the time, at least on the radio.

I AM FROM THE BRONX AND WAS NEVER ABLE TO HEAR B91, I WISH I DID, I HAVE A TAPE FROM THEM THAT MY FRIEND GAVE ME IN 89, IT WAS GOOD STUFF, THEY BROKE A LOT OF THINGS, ALSO 89.1 NYU WAS GOOD BACK THEN AS WELL

IT SUCKED DONKEY BALLZ!!!!

I knew the time had come when they started to play "POP GOES THE WEASEL" by THIRD BASS. next came the other hip hop songs like "OPP" and "YOU CAN GET WITH THIS/THAT".

the last sign was TKA's last single "MARIA". I knew TKA was done as well as the world of FREESTYLE.

in 1995, LA MEGA picked up where HOT 97 left off and played tons of freestyle but only on certain nights (much like LATINO MIX does now)

YEAH, MY BOY ROB RAZOR WAS PLAYING ON SATURDAY NIGHTS FREESTYLE, THAT WAS GOOD STUFF, I BOUGHT ALL OF THAT STUFF, THAT'S WHEN THERE WERE RECORDS ON ALL THIS STUFF...GOOD STUFF..

There was a definite hole left when Hot 97 changed it's format to rap. At that point I just remember radio changing so much and not for the better. In the mid-late 90's the only music you heard on the radio was rap, pop (as in Ace of Base), and then eventually alternative. I would just go and buy freestyle cds in order to be able to hear it whenever I wanted. That's why I was so grateful when KTU came on the air!!!

Yeah, I remember when La Mega was tearing it up with Freestyle. I would come down from Boston on weekends to visit family and if I was near a stereo or something, I would record the mix. I think that was the first time I heard Fascinations, "Still Miss You". Haven't been able to hear it ever since then, let alone been able to find it. I haven't been able to find a lot of music, now that I think about it. Probably never will. It's a shame.

iM NOT SURE WHOSE VERSION THEY PLAYED.....THE COVERGIRLS OR FASCINATIONS. I recorded the LA MEGA shows every friday night and I have to check them out to see what one they played.

as for the version by FASCINATION, I have it. 🙂

I might have an extra copy. i gotta see.

I think every once in a while they play the beats from "Brake for Love" (not quite Freestyle, but from that time)..

It sucked when 97.1 phased out the Freestyle..

I wonder if one of the other hip-hop/rap stations would consider some Freestyle to help increase/broaden their audience.. :confused

I DOUBT IT, HIP HOP IS WHERE IT IS AT, I KNOW THAT SUCKS, BUT 50 CENT IS WHAT LISA LISA WAS TO US AS KIDS, I WISH EVERY DAY THAT THINGS NEVER CHANGED, BUT THEY DID...

I don't remember Hot 97 playing Freestyle, I was only like 9 years old,But i wish that i was around back then, I missed the era of freestyle, i so wish i was around in the late 80's to hear freestyle, but i was to worried about playing kicball outside with my friends...lol

DAYUM!!!!!!

:crap IT WAS SO UPSETTING TO ME, THAT I STOPPED LISTENING TO THE RADIO FOR MONTHS.TILL I HEARD LA MEGA WITH NORTY AND JOHNNY PLAYIN THE FREESTYLE ON WEEKENDS.. 😛

THE BEST WAS THE SUMMERS WHEN YOU WOULD GO TO ORCHID BEACH OR JONES BEACH AND SEE ALL THE HOT 97 NEON BANNERS, YOU WOULD SEE THE HOT TEAM HANDING OUT RECORDS, SHIRTS, THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLD DAYS,,,THE BEST WAS THE FIRST HOT NIGHT, WHEN HOT 97 WAS 103.5 HOT 103, WITH JELLYBEAN MIXING FROM THE PALLADIUM, THEY PLAYED PIECES ON THE RADIO OF THAT NIGHT, THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HEARD ONLY IN THE NIGHT BY VOICE IN FASHION, AND AT THAT TIME IT WASN'T ON ATLANTIC RECORDS...
