I was wondering if anyone knew how and when freestyle got it's name. Back in the day it was just dance music. At some point it started being called freestyle. How and when did it start to become known as "freestyle"?

sam, there is some speculation on how its name came to be. what i have been told by the experts (the artists) it was simply a refernece used to help desribe a form of a song. for example: when an artists starts using his/her lyrics in an form of words, it is called "freestyling" (freestyle) where the words would just flow out and sound good. now, alot of people call a song "freestyle" because of it beats. see how there is a problem? the artists say it came from the vocals, the fans say it is the beat. i am siding with the artist on this one!! think about something, if you take the freestyle "slow songs" and speed up the lyrics and change the beat, would that make it freestyle?

this has been certainly a subject of the past and if i recall....it was term that began it's way in the late 80's. the term would then become universal and many records that held a "latin hop hip" would be considered "freestyle", not to confuse consumer of hip hop whom know "freestyle" and hip hop tracks that are not written and spontaneiously song on the spot. it would be called "Freestyle (Dance)". But anyways I guess this is mainly in depth question!

LEX, BUT THAT IS HOW THE ARTISTS LOOK AT IT TOO. THEY JUST SPONTANISLY SPEWED OUT LYRICS THIS MAKING IT "FREESTYLE". I KNOW IT IS CONFUSING WITH "HIP-HOP" BUT THE WORD WAS USED IN OUR WORLD ALOT LONGER THAN THE HIP-HOPPERS WOULD OF USED IT.

well bro I was talking about the sales market. for reason me saying that, and the reason for considering freestyle a genre of dance music...is simply this: freestyle(latin hip hop) were considered club songs, and club songs are generally dance songs. in the 80's freestyle's core was in the clubs. thus being considered dance/club music. however i don't want to get very detailed but that's the sketch and why i agree to call freestyle a part of dance music.

According to the December '93 issue of Dance Music Authority, Freestyle was first referred to as "Latin Hip-Hop" and then "Miami Music", before it was replaced ty the term "Freestyle". Supposedly in the Winter Music Conference of '92 "the notion was brought up to give freestyle a different name since freestyle had such a negative connotation." I personally like the term "freestyle" and don't see it in a negative way...as far as where the term came from...perhaps it had something to do with the group Freestyle (aka Tony Butler) of "Don't Stop the Rock" fame...Perhaps people started calling the music "Freestyle" when a song would have that same kind of sound...

Actually, It started as Latin Hip-hop, but then to more popular word Club Music, since it was play all over the clubs, Miami Music was called only in Miami just like every other state will creat a name for their terms of music. I started to hear Freestyle late 93 to 94, But me as an artist I don't like using Freestyle for the reason that Ken said, as soon as they hear Freestyle Artist the 1st thing that comes out there mouth is "Do you Rap?" which kills the moment and you have to explain yourself. Freestyle was also put on for the Addlibs done at the of the songs that will improvize the style you carry, like for example my song at the end of Nunca my add libs are "Nunca, Nunca mi amor, oh no,no....Ven Aqui mi amor mi morena, yo te necesito por eso" and so on while the chorus is going the same as it start it, or some times with out a chorus. Hope it helps out...Later fellas

I remember when some people were calling Freestyle "HeartThrob", and a lot of the producers were including mixes on the record saying "HearthThrob Mix", like Noel.

"Freestyle"

Well...As far as I can remember "Freestyle" for me began in the mid-80's. Some clubs in Manhattan and clubs in the Bronx like "The Devil's Nest" & "La Mirage" were the first to adopt this new music and it's new name "Freestyle". I heard the term "Freestyle" long before it was reffered to as "Latin Hip Hop". In the final days of the original Break Dancing era &"set it Off" The new dance Style was being called "Freestyle" and with it came the new sounds of music & lyrics that we still call "Freestyle" So I cant really be sure if it came from the new style of dance or the new expression in Music...Maybe a combination of both, but either way it comes from having FREEDOM of STYLE. A style without rules, regulations or inhibitions we all took FREESTYLE in with open arms and hearts!

before ii knew this music as freestyle we used to reffer to it as "club music" i was like 10 years old what would i know lol 🙂
