I BREATH, THEREFORE I AM
Please, let me introduce myself. My name is HIV AIDS, and I am quite famous or should I say infamous. You see, I am known to crush families, hopes, dreams and lives, and I am a globetrotter. I am constantly traveling to different areas and countries even continents, and wherever I am or have been I make sue that no one will forget me. You see I always leave some evidence of my visit behind when I travel to the next place.
Interestingly enough even though I am so well known all over the world, there are still people who have no idea how to approach me. Some even denies my existence, which only triggers me to really show who I am.
I am laughing so hard, because no one is safe from my involvement. I am everywhere: in your family, your friends, and your co-workers. My existence goes from the newborn to the senior citizen; from the “party-animal” to the clergy, so you see no one is safe from me.
I do have some enemies, yet I trust that you the average person, will help me to survive. The only thing that can actually bring me to my knees are when you humans are starting to be more careful in your sexual contacts and start using condoms and safe sex all the time. Then of course, medical science has given me a run for the money, literally. Now they have discovered medication that will diminish my existence. Heaven only knows when they might find a way to kill me altogether. Although, I am still relying on all of you that refuse to listen to all the warnings about me. Sex is only one way for me to leave my fingerprint in you, every time you are exchanging bodily fluids including blood, I might be there, so don’t feel too secure. I know how to get you.
I have a secret that I want to share with you. When I first started to be famous, I was alone; now I have millions of “siblings”. For each time that someone with my fingerprint has sex with someone else with my sibling’s fingerprint they create a new sibling for us. I started as strain A and after a while there was strain B, now when you mix A and B you are creating C and so on. That is how we have survived and have expanded our territory, and continue to do so each day of the year. As long as you are continuing unsafe sex we are expanding and surviving. Therefore, safe sex is our biggest enemy together with medication, education and information about us.
