Can anyone give a quick explanation of how freestyle in Canada got started? Who was the first Canadian freestyle artists? If Latino hip hop started in America with Puerto Ricans in NY and then Miami, how did it get up to Canada? Are there many Puerto Ricans in Canada that took it up there? Just wondering.

There aren't many Puerto Ricans at all in Canada. Freestyle was made popular here in the early to mid 90s by the Europeans (Italians, Greeks, Portuguese, etc)

There were one or two Canadian artists in the 80's like Nancy Martinez, but the Canadian freestyle scene didn't really emerge until about 1994-95 with Chris & Alexia Phillips, Intonation, Manuella, and Elissa. The main labels were Ti Amo and Odeon.

Although Canadian freestyle started out with a very old-school feel, towards the late 90s more of a Euro/Trance influence began to emerge.

And that Euro/Trance feel can still be heard in the more recent releases

thanks for the explanation. i only have one freestyle from Canada, its a old cassete with song by Intonation Joey - Just Die In Your Armes. I thought it was very good song, it was a remake of an old 80s pop song by Cutting Crew. Is the new Canadian freestyle sound different from that kind of sound? Please recommend who are the best of new Canadian Freestyle. thanks!

Intonation & Joee have a lot of amazing songs: "Nothing To You", "Better Than You" and "Need You In My Life" are some

Zoe, Dimi, Kathy Phillips, Elissa, Alexia Phillips, Chris Phillips, Thiago Derucio, Maurizio are some really good Canadian freestyle artists

"Freestyle Heaven" and "Planet Freestyle" are some really good compilations with some Canadian artists featured
