Since we have been talking about 80's synth pop and electro dance. We will be discussing the many styles of electronic dance music. One genre we wiil be discussing is Freestyle. Originally it was called Latin Hip Hop or Heartthrob. Freestyle is a style of dance music created in the middle 1980's in the height of the Post disco era. The music was started by singers and producers who are pureto ricans in New York. They were big supporters of 70's disco, early hip hop/rap and mainly early electro dance music including Garage(which we will be talking about later in class). Many early 80's dance records were being peformed by blacks and Europeans, no hispanic voices were on these records. A couple of producers are responsible for filling the void of hispanic singers in dance records are Andy Panda and Joey Gardner. They are responsible for producing the pioneers of this genre of Dance; TKA( who are known as The Kings of Freestyle) who was originally wanted to be a hip hop group, but Joey gardner thought; they would work better in Dance music. And, Nayobe, Lisa Lisa, Expose, The Cover Girls(who was thought as a latin version of The Supremes) and Expose. This became a dominant style of dance music in the clubs and had some big hits on Radio during the mid, late 80's and early 1990's.
