Family Targets La Jolla Churches With Anti-Gay Protest
A family from Kansas targeted La Jolla churches Sunday with anti-gay messages, 10News reported.
According to 10News, Shirley and Brent Phelps-Roper, along with nine of their 11 children were very vocal about their anti-American and anti-homosexual message.
Church officials allowed the planned protests to take place, citing their right to free speech.
But some churchgoers found the message hard to handle.
"It's free speech, and I think it's stupid," said one church member.
"We are here to remind these people, there is a God and a standard and a hell and a day of judgment, and it is not OK to be gay," said Shirley Phelps-Roper.
The Phelps-Roper family, who say they belong to the West Boro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., has targeted different churches around the country, and is responsible for the website GodHatesFags.com.
