I loved 2nd generation. I even found some old videos of that show from when it was on TV 🙂
 
what the hell are you guys talking about? where could i find this 2nd generation stuff? kenny, yeah, considering the bills they pay and the "mtv news" stuff right after 'em, yeah, you can say that theres enough room for a "freestyle weekend". now, mtv dont know freestyle (or probably does know but just dont want to acknowledge anything that the public wont buy into), so do you think the public would know? theyll probably think that youre talking about rap or some shit.
 
"2nd Generation" was a syndicated music video program produced by MTV and the Tribune Company. The half-hour program was hosted by Tony Moran and Andy Panda who introduced Freestyle videos, interviewed artists and included some of Freestyle's biggest names in some of the corniest skits/segments. It ran for about two years here in Chicago on WGN-Channel 9. I'm not sure why production ceased, but towards the end, the boys were in skits which saw thwm tied up by members of the young group Another Bad Creation, which probably meant that the "suits" were trying to create a crossover audience for Tony and Andy...and that's the rest of the story. It was a great show...ahead of it's time!

IT WAS MTV THAT DID THE LATIN EXPLOSION SPECIAL IN THE SUMMER OF 1999 THAT GAVE GEORGE LAMOND,COVER GIRLS AND EXPOSE EXPOSURE,MTV SOWCASED THE COMEBACK OF TKA IN 2000,MTV LATINO USED TO PLAY FREESTYLE VIDEOS ALL THE TIME AND MTV AMERICA HAD A SHOW ON IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE PARTY CALLED "2ND GENERATION" HOWEVER THE SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE PARTY RATINGS WENT DOWN AND ONLY 2ND GENERATION WAS WHAT PEOPLE WATCHED,MTV STARTED SHOWING 2ND GENERATION ON WGN AND WPIX,EVENTUALLY IT GOT SO HIGH IN RATINGS THAT TONY MORAN & ANDY PANDA WERE ON STAR SEARCH AND INTERVIWING OSCAR DE LA HOYA AT HIS BOXING MATCHES,HOWEVER SINCE THE SHOW WAS ON SATURDAY MORNINGS MTV FELT THE AUDIENCE WAS LIMITED,AND THEY DIDN'T WANT IT ON MTV AGAIN BECAUSE ONLY PEOPLE WITH CABLE COULD WATCH IT AND THE SHOW WAS DOING HUGE NUMBERS IN AMERICA'S MAJOR HISPANIC MARKETS,MTV'S MISTAKE WAS REPLACING MTV INTERNACIONAL ANOTHER SHOW THAT PLAYED LATIN POP & FREESTYLE ON TELLEMUNDO,MTV THOUGHT 2ND GENERATION ON PRIME TIME WEEKENDS ON TELEMUNDO WOULD DO HUGE NUMBERS,BUT AFTER IT WAS PULLED FROM ENGLISH TV,THE BILINGUAL YOUNG LATINO AUDIENCE AND CROSSOVER NONLATINO BLACK AND WHITE AUDIENCE DID NOT WATCH IT OR EVEN KNEW IT WAS ON TELEMUNDO,THE SPANISH SPEAKERS WATCHING TELEMUNDO WERE NOT HAPPY THAT THE ONLY MUSIC ON SPANISH TV WAS ENGLISH FREESTYLE VIDEOS THAT REPLACED THEIR LATIN POP HEROES LIKE LUIS MIGUEL,SELENA,CHAYANNE,JON SECADA,BARRIO BOYZZ AND MANA.PEOPLE WANTED THEIR SALSA VIDEOS BY MARC ANTHONY & INDIA BACK,THEY WANTED THEIR RANCHERAS BY SELENA.LA MAFIA AND LOS TIGERES DEL NORTE,SPANIS ROCK FANS WNTED SHAKIRA BACK!NO ONE SUPPORTED SECOND GENERATION ON TELEMINDO,AND IT WAS SHOWN WHEN HOT 97 AND POWER 96 PULLED ALL FREESTYLE MUSIC FROM THEIR PLAYLIST,IT WAS A DEATH BLOW TO FREESTYLE ON TV,WORSE I OWN ABOUT 100 TO 200 FRESTYLE MUSIC VIDEOS FROM 1984 TO 2000 WICH MTV GAVE ME FOR FREE ALONG TIME AGO WHEN I TALKEDTO A GUY THAT WORKS THERE ONLINE,THE REST I GOT OFF THE INTERNET FROM FANS LIKE YOU,WHAT I'M SAYING I'M NOT SURE IF MTV GAVE AWAY THEIR MASTER COPIES OF THOSE FREESTYLE VIDEOS AND SHOW,THEY HANDLED THE WHOLE 2ND GENERATION SHOW WRONG IT WENT FROM A HIGH RATED SHOW FROM 1990 TO 1992 HOWEVER BY 1993 IT WAS A FLOP ON TELEMUNDO.LOVE IN CHRIST,OMAR 😉

Oops, I stand corrected on the MTV/VH1 thingy. But for some reason, I recall the special being run on VH1. What likely happened was that MTV did the special, and VH1 picked it up for airing on one of their specialty show blocks. You know, the whole world is owned by the Big Brothers at MTV.

Thanks for providing an excellent report on the rise and fall of Latin Hip-Hop, Freestyle,etc. on MTV. Hopefully some of the Big Brothers are watching and will respond.

i remember the last days of "second generation" being on WPIX on sundays at 10 IN new york, i didnt see that many cause i had major hangovers from drinking the night before!!
 
did MTV give the show to the free channels? i dont think that is possible of MTV. they are very touchy about thier shows, be it good or bad, but for them to give up a show and still keep the logo attached is a first to me. perhaps it was tony's idea all along and he just took it with him when he left?

oh. no kidding, downtown julie b. and g.l.? lol. i was too young to know about shit like that, whats past is past. i didnt see a tka reunion thing goin on mtv in 2000, you must mean MTV international, im talkin about mtv MTV the channel that makes bsb and nstink no.1 everyday on trl. anyway, i cant get international. although i do remember an mtv international on telemundo back then, but all i remember them playing was pop spanish stuff, no freestyle in english. another thing, if they showcased tka s reunion that shit wouldve been on the net as well, in their site....mtv.com
 
oh and by the way proyecto1 is there anyway i can get a hold of those tapes. maybe some that you dont want or possibly make me a copy. maybe, i can make them into dvd's and give them away to anybody whos into dance that dont know freestyle. i'd also like it for me. 😀
 
Yes MTV used their logo on the 2ND GENERATION videos.2ND Generation did huge numbers on MTV they had George Lamond,TKA,Sweet Sensation on the show and it was the number one rated weekend show on MTV.When MTV TOOK THE SHOW TO WPIX & WGN 2ND GENERATION BECAME A NATIONWIDE IN EVERY HISPAIC MARKET!TKA,GEORGE LAMOND,BARRIO BOYZZ,JON SECADA,LISA LISA,BARRIO BOYZZ,PROYECTO UNO,CORINA AND LISETTE MELENDEZ were regulars AND THE SHOW WAS HUGE!CocaCola aired a commercial featuring SELENA,CORO,LIGHTER SHADE OF BROWN & LISETTE MELENDEZ!Everything was great,MTV was not worried hot 97 & power96 pulling the plug on freestyle because they expected the Latin Explosion to happend just as huge as it became and they created MTV Latino channel to support styles like freestyle but after that they didn't need MTV Internacional spanish video show on telemundo so they put 2ND Generation on telemundo and it floped because despite it being a Hispanic show it was an english language show on spanish tv.Spanish tv viewers were upset they now had to have cable to and pay watch the Latin music they love when they used to be abel to watch it for free.As far as my video collection I don't have two VCRs to record them for you now however Angel Love from TKA,Alex from Latin Nation and Fernando Benitez also gave me lots of freestyle music videos.Email me and when I get another vcr I will hook you up,I know I got Freestyle DJ Riggo that's been waiting for my music videos for like 6 months but someday I'll hook you all up in the next six months.GOD Bless,Omar 🙂

I REMEMBER WHEN JULIE BROWN (WUBA-WUBA) HAD TKA ON CLUB MTV. THOSE WERE THE GOOD OL DAYS! I REMEMBER NOEL AND INFORMATION SOCIETY (UGH!!) TOO.
