Hi everybody

Sometimes , pop artists did one or two freestyle songs like Deborah Harry, Samantha Fox , Emjay ...
I found a lot of websites which attribute these 2 sounds like Latin Freestyle genre. Can you confirm if these songs are freestyle ?

-First : Tell it yo my Heart from Taylor Dayne:

- And Second : Two Of Hearts from Stacey Q; :

Tell it yo my Heart from Taylor Dayne and Two Of Hearts from Stacey Q. were club hits first that ended up charting after so I consider them Freestyle. Rumors by TimeX Social Club could be put in the same category. It was a freestyle club hit first. Same thing with the song Running by Information Society.

Deborah Harry - Her 1986 song - In Love With Love is definitely a Freestyle song.

Samantha Fox was an odd one. In her case she was the opposite. She was a mainstream pop artist first who's songs became club hits after. I wouldn't consider her freestyle at all.

Emjay would be more in the 90s Eurodance category but I still consider it an off-shoot of Freestyle so it all goes in the same general category.

Yes to both.

Bay Love is a Freestyle classic. This was the golden era of Freestyle. It's at this point that Freestyle songs started to actually chart and get radio play.

I live in France and i didnt have the chance to live at the time the evolution of freestyle
I listened at the time most of famous latin freestyle but i didnt know that was a specific genre , even the name "latin Freestyle" i heard it later thanks to the internet
 
I’ve always felt Baby Talk was more Euro Disco or New Wavw like CC Catch and Modern Talking. It kind of toes the line. Baby Love I felt was a rip off of Madonna.
 
For the case of Samantha Fox , she is clearly a Pop/Synth Pop singer but this track is for me a latin Freestyle sound . Full Force are featuring on this song too

I was around when the genre stated. Back in the early days ist really didn't even have a name. It got lumped into the Hi-NRG category and really didn't get get called "Freestyle" until the last 1980s.

I'm a walking encyclopedia on the music and I also have a massive collection so please let me know if you need anything.

Ahh! Yes Freestyle to both!
 
I think most people would have various opinions on what is and isn't freestyle.

I would list Alisha's "Baby Talk" as freestyle. All of the other songs listed here, not freestyle. Debbie Harry's "In Love With Love" had a freestyle mix, but was not a freestyle song.

This is the original version that is on her CD.

 
All the songs you listed are not actually freestyle
but I leave you these songs that maybe they were not supposed to be freestyle

In according to discogs Baby Talk is Highnrg and synth pop
 
Why Naughty Girls from Samantah Fox is not Latin Freestyle ? Her songs owns the characterisitcs electronic vibe from latin freestyle .
I know she is a pop singer but when you listen naught girls , also with Full Force , it seems really to be a latin freestyle song
 
How about “Is it Real” by Pinay? They went more R&B with their newer songs but this has that freestyle vibe to it.

 
The Taylor Dayne version of "Do You Want it Right Now" is more 1980s freestyle than "Tell It to My Heart" which is a bit more close to the 1990s sound. I didn't think anyone could do "Do You Want it Right Now" as good as the original by Siedah Garrett. Both "Do You Want it Right Now" and "Tell It to My Heart" are pretty much what regular top 40 music was in 1988, from New Kids on the Block to Kool & the Gang full of Yamaha, Roland, Korg synthesizers and others.

I agree with you 100%. These songs are all dance/pop songs, NOT freestyle. Freestyle has a very specific sound and none of these tracks has the freestyle bassline or Latin instrumentation that makes a record authentically freestyle. It’s like saying an Agatha Christie murder mystery is a slasher film. Just, no. Very very different styles. And Jody Watley and Timex Social Club are R&B/pop, in no way freestyle under any circumstances.
