Can someone, explain how and if freestyle artist are receiving any royalties from their music?

Maybe someone like NYASIA or K7 who have had their music played on radio can explain -

do any of the artist recieved any kind of royalties because they wrote, co-wrote, published, own rights to any of their songs that are still played on radio or sold on compilations -

just curious -

ok to answer your question. I never did receive royalties while on MicMac. unfortuantely I trusted someone with something I knew nothing about at all! and in the end no one was really looking out for me, not even me, so I had ot learn the hard way.... well you know the story after that. while i was on eli records I did recieve royalties for "If I could see you now"

I was lucky enough to make my money from all the shows.

I know for a fact after having spoken to Arlene about this several times that she never received a penny from any of her work which in turn gave her a negative attitude towards the industry.Can you blame her?To me that's a great injustice against a clearly talented singer like Arlene who helped bring about the rise of Freestyle.Of all people she is the last person who deserves such treatment.

i know everyone story is different - i know some artist got screwed, because of lack of knowledge of the music business and how it works -

Nyasia - i don't wanna get personal, but for the last song mentioned, were those royalties from album sales, airplay, u wrote, etc...?


As much as I would love to hear personally stories, I won't ask. Just curious to see how the business of royalties work -

I heard there is good money in writing the song, example , SAFIRE co-wrote "thinking of you" , so does she still get something everytime it's played?

I know THUMP records was making tons of $$$ off thier comps and someone told me they called them up, told them who they were and a check was mailed out the next day! Ive advised other artists to do the same but they refused! 🙁
 
I know nothing about how they would get credit or not for writing or singing a song. Thats totally wrong how so many get screwed out of the credit for what they have created. So unfair how others can benefit from some peoples inexperience in the business, and take advantage.
I BELIEVE (not positive) if they are the ones that are credited for composing or performing, they are paid their royalties through companies like ASCAP or BMI, my Dad has worked for ASCAP for many years...they keep track of whenever the song is performed or played on radio, etc. That is how they are paid their royalties, through companies like that. Right?

Lamonfan, now I am signed to both of them.
 
Most artists did NOT receive a penny for their recordings back in the day. Remember, alot of them were young and knew nothing about anything. They saw a record deal and they went for it. Could you blame them? Judy was telling me recently that she didn't receive anything from Profile records until she recorded her album. Not a penny for the "No Reason To Cry" or "Come Into My Arms" singles, which had already been released in the two years prior and made a ton of money in airplay and sales...Judy's story is pretty common of most of the artists.

The money that was made was made in performing. Back then, they were in such high demand it wasn't uncommon to see a TKA or a Safire or a Cynthia performing 5 or 6 shows a weekend. And considering I know how much most of them get now, I can only imagine what they got for a show back then. Minus road managers fee and booking agent fee it still adds up. I guess thats how most of them supported themselves, cause its not like any of them were receiving a check every time their song was played on the radio. And considering most of them didn't write the songs, they weren't eligible for songwriting royalties.

Is this situation only limited to small labels or does it also include the larger ones? Sweet sensation i believe went from next plateau to Acto to Atlantic, Safire went from cutting to Mercury & the cover girls from fever to capitol to epic. Did this mean these artist went from label to label wrongly advised?

Is this typical for the majority of artist then? freestyle or not.

I would have thought when the artist met up at concert/venues they woulld start to talk & discuss contracts?
