I live here in west palm beach. I always listened to power 96 until a little over a year ago before they changed the format to nothing but Rap, R&B, Urban, and Hiphop.......They use to have great Freestyle, 70's underground Disco (Lunchtime Classic dance and disco mix), and trance, house and even Rap hiphop mixes......Now that party 93.1 is in full swing, power96 went to one format.....The only half way descent radio station to listen to is party 93.1 but they don't hardly ever play any freestyle, and when they do, it's something pop that everyone would remember, also they don't mix it..... Power 96 use to have the best freestyle mixes I ever heard especially the lunch time freestyle friday mixes with Jammin Johnny or DJ Rene. I believe they are no longer working for power 96. I e-mail Kid Curry and you should have seen the response..... Also to mention Mega 103.5 is all rap Etc. We have alot of rap stations but no old school freestyle dance and disco stations.......When I found out that power 96 existed back in 1990, That was my # 1 station up till they changed. I'm so upset with power 96 and and would not care if they go off the air, the rate their going......Adam

Here In PA,
Freestyle is pretty much non-existent. I have sent dozen of E-mails to program directors and DJ's in an attempt to promote Freestyle. Most of the time I was just ignored and others basicly stated it was not a popular genre and had no place on their formats. Now what I do is pretty much ignore the radio and listen to my CDs, every once in a while I'll have some one ake me where did i get the song I'm listening to, Hell I even got a DJ from one of the clubs down here to even play Ashley's "When's It All Gonna End" and the crow loved it. So I still say Freestyle isn't really dead, just keept quiet by the Music industry.

In a way that's pretty much how I feel.

I'm mean I'm not asking for them to completely stop playing Hip/Hop,
Just to share some air waves with Freestyle, but most want to continue to shove Rap and Hip/hop down everyones throat. That why I give thanks to the stations who take the time to play Freestyle and allow it to be heard. The others, I just don't listen and listen to CDs Damn, in the last two months my wife says I spent around $500.00 on CD's, But You only live once and as long as my priorities are in order and every thing is paid, well for something that gives me peace of mind to me it's worth it.

ADA1984,if u still have the response from kid kurry, please post it up on here,so peep's can read it and send them there thoughts on him,ADA TRY LISTING TO 98.3 FM IT'S SPANISH/ENG STATION THEY PLAY A LOT OF freestyle AND THEY DO THE MIX EVERYDAY AT NOON AND ON FRIDAY'S IT'S ALL FREESTYLE FRIDAY AND ALL OF THE good OL dj's FROM POWER96 ARE ON THERE MIXING OR THEY HAVE THERE OWN SHOWS ON THERE........vapro.....

Well a lot of people are not interested in Freestyle when they have artists like Christina Aquilera, Britney Spears, Pink, etc taking over dance music and getting all the radio play. You have to have interested people in Freestyle to push it and there are not enough existing people like this. And there has to be a "UNITY" between everyone also supporting the music and making real things happen.

they are deff not DANCE music, they are pop music although christina and pink are good performers/singers i do not support them as much as i do FREESTYLE. but u r right there should be more peep's supporting it. off the radio here in MIAMI/FT. LAUDERDALE there are a lot of peep's that support it but not enough to keep requesting on the radio 98.3 radio is doing a GREAT job playing it on the radio and the dj's know thats what the listeners want but they cant always play it because thats not what the p.d wants us to play.........peep's KEEP FREESTYLE ALIVE IN FLORIDA.......vapro

Ada, I hear ya man. My brother lives in the GreenAcres section of West Palm and my wife and I visit a couple times a year, and back in the early/mid 90's Power 96 was da bomb down there, but not any more...now they have bombed. :lol Vapro is right, though...I was down there in Feb and 98.3 definitely kicks the freestyle, so check it out if you can get it where you live. Say a Prayer for some of the DJs on the radio to start playin more freestyle....I don't even care if it's Old School because I love the Old School Freestyle....just play it.

This is sort of what I remember Kid Curry responding back, I don't care what you think, And please don't send me a e-mail what any more foul language again and then told me to go screw myself. I said the Sh** you play. I guess Kid curry thinks he's a perfect christian.......Yes power 96 was the best radio station in south florida back in the mid 90's they would play a varity of dance, from Disco to freestyle to hiphop, I even remember there saying, Music For everyone, Now it's music for the ghetto......

younger audiences and freestyle

it's a joke. it's the same old story, everytime you turn on the radio. hip-hop has become the mainstream music with radio listeners, and is having more of an influence, especially in the younger audience. i stopped by a bowling alley near my house here in jersey, and my friend was playing freestyle. the kids there were almost screaming, "change the music, or at least play something that came out after we were born."

Ya I know, the younger generation loves rap, I did. Most people get sick of it after a while when they grow up, I know I'm sick of all the new stuff, It all sounds the same...stealing each others beats and back ground music, also stealing from something that is old, from the 70's 80's and 90's......It all sounds the same, to the younger generation a song sounds real good when there is foul and graphic language. I love alot of the old school REAL rap and hiphop when it started in the early 80's and 90's...now thats what I call rap...Jarule, BK2, Ludacris and all the rest of them don't faze me one bit.....

boy

i second that i just got here for three weeks,. and i got to say on power 96 hip hop has taken over,. theres no freestyle,. except you lunch jams and stuff like that,.

but theres a nother radio station here now 93.1 and they play dance music,. not freestyle music but transe and dance and high energy,.

the entire day !!!,. nothing but dance music,. so while its not freestyle it puts the pinch on power 96,. and prob makes them play more freestyle,.

then theyd like too !!!!!,.

on the younger generation thing yeah they are a big obstacle,. i think its time to give up on them,. and hope that the next generation is more ""dance"" music enclined,.

as far as im concerened i Detest rap and Anxiously await it demise,. lol,. which will soon come hahaha,. and on that day or year im going to get drunk as a skunk,. !!!!

but for now we just have t put up with it !!!

closing on the rap topic

rap will disappear,.!! one day when they make a mistake,. like disco did when it played to close and to much on the white rock community,. and that community bought it down,.

the way heavy metal and heavy rock did in the eighties,. when thyre life stye became bigger than there music,. and the guidetes and there high hair went out of style,.

the problem with rap is that it;s downfall has taken longer than i thought it would,. but i suspect,. ???

that one day vilonce will drop in nyc LA miami texas etc,.

and i think when violonce drops,.??? thats when rap will slowly disappear

cuase violonce ( i dont care what anybody says )

is what keeps that insidious music alive,. and really is the only reason why a person would """ need""" to hear it,.

once the violonce is gone,. the need for hip hop is gone,. and the need for guns is gone etc,. etc,.

and hip hop can closlwy begin to die once the violonce dies,.

And on that day im going to get drunk as a skunk ,. !!!!! lol,.

hip hop has to die one way or the other and it will ,.,. cuase i'll be honest i dont know how much longer we can hold out lol !!!!!!

lol !!!!!

but it will die,. lol imagine a day without it ,. lol !!!!

I don't think rap/hip hop will ever disappear. There is no reason for it. It is constantly changing and re-creating itself all the time. It is not only a music, but a way of life to many (like freestyle once was).

There is nothing wrong with HIP HOP. It has actually gotten much better over the years (a big departure from the street-thug themes)

I agree with you Kenny. It will never die. These kids will always support it and it is constantly changing. Plus, there is unity there to make things happen. Not just talk it.

Ya, even though I don't like rap, I think it will always be around. As far as Power 96, I guess there is more of the younger generation then us 20 - 35 y/o so they will stick to the urban sounds as long is their on the air. and party 93.1, they repeat their songs over and over again, Also I think they need to have on air DJ's, I like to hear DJ Personalitys, they also need to have some kind of old school lunch mix with disco and freestyle. I have to give them credit they are better now then they were a year ago, I don't think they will ever be as good as Power 96 in the 90's. I like to listen to Party 93.1 at night, when they go to clubs and mix up alot of tribal......

lol

i think hip hop is the worst example facing young kids today,. if someone told me that the fun music of bee bop and 80's wrap like big daddy caine and run dmc

was going to turn into the poison it is today i wouldnt of belived it but yup it happened,.

like i said all great runs have to come to an end sports music etc,.

and it usually starts with a mistake,. !!! lol ,.

soon hip hop will make one some where

and then its demise will begin and dance music can rise to its proper place lol

and all forms of dance freestyle transe pop etc,. from back in the days can rule again just like in the eighties lol,.???

just kidding getting ahead of myself lol,.

untill then we will have to wait for a mistake lol ,. like al capon made with his taxxes when he was running the mob lol ,.

something will give sooner or later,. i hope !! gash to have to hear that crap night and day and day and night now for like 10 years now has been

like a freeking testament or a jail setence Which never ends !!!! lol

on vacation here in miami yup i picked up that 93.1 great great radion station lol,. all dance all the time.

although theres no freestyle its better than what you hear today on power 96.5,. its sad cuase at one time 96.5 played prob some of the best freestyle mixxes id had ever heard,.

and when i say that i say that thinking to some of the best mixxes in 103.5 between 86 to 88 and there saturday night dance parties,.

i think ada? would agree with me that 96.5 at one time played some freestyles mixxes that only the singers and there dj's would only know how to mix,.
