yes.. as of today the frenzy has been cancelled... i can't believe this.. i'm enraged! i'm gonna explode... this is the last f*cking thing we needed.. the ONLY freestyle show got cancelled... INCREDIBLE! ohh man... this is it for us you guys... :sosad

The Frenzy was a groundbreaking show in Toronto radio because it was fresh and different. It filled a void by daring to be original, playing a genre of music that had, to that point, been neglected. When The Frenzy first started in the mid-90s, it was a huge step forward for freestyle in Canada. If it wasn't for the Frenzy, artists like Elissa, Joee, Chris & Alexia Phillips, etc would never have gotten the exposure they needed to break out. Simply put, the Canadian freestyle scene would not exist were it not for this groundbreaking show!

But then something happened. It's like those episodes of "Behind The Music" where the artist becomes too popular for their own good, and begins to go on a downward spiral. The Canadian freestyle scene, and the Frenzy specifically, fell into a familiar formula which caused the show and the music to stagnate and become repetitive and boring. Eventually, the show became nothing more than a 60 minute commercial for whatever the latest Tony Monaco CD was that was being pushed.

The Freestyle Frenzy became succesful because it dared to be different. It died becuse it refused to change.

R.I.P.

it made me tear.. oh man... like what's the f*cking point of anything now

June 4/95 - Jan 11/04 - May The Freestyle Frenzee REST IN PEACE
2004 will be the year that tv says goodbye to FRIENDS an FRASER and the year radio says goodbye to THE FRENZEE. Despite yet another increase in the fall ratings and a slolid performer for almost a decade programming has decided that freestyle music no longer fits in with weekend programming. The station has also cancelled The Mc Mario show which played house, euro and a tad of hip hop. An overwhelming support has been pouring in via emails and phone calls and management will have their hands full dealing with irrate listeners tomorrow. WIth the growing trend towards hip hop and pop-rock freestyle in toronto will now move to the underground with no outlet to play the classics and to expose new talent. Z will still play the time honoured classic freestyle hits during our various wayback features but they feel that the station is better suited rolling regular format or perhaps adding another top 40 countdown show to the 5-7pm timeslot. Letters of support and dis-satifaction have been sent to me and I have forwarded all of them to programming. Thanks for the years of support and although it won't be heard on commercial toronto radio, freestyle music will live in our hearts 4-ever! Thanks for living the FREESTLE LIFESTYLE. K, I am here to let you know Gornicevo, not because you mentioned my name in your post.....but

I wanted to let you know, that this quarter, the FRENZY's Listenership went up by 10% and did not decline at all...& i'm wondering WTF you are talking about? :confused

State the facts, and if you are going to state your opinion, let others know that it's your opinion and not a real fact.....

You are making it seem like it went off the air because it went down hill, That is not the truth. It didn't die because "it refused to change", The Frenzy went off the air, because the station is ready for a change, plain and simple. :confused

Tony was pumping some great new music over the past few weeks.

R.I.P. The show will be missed.

P.S. And if you really feel that way about the Frenzy, then you will be happy that it's gone.

P.S.S. BTW It was Energy 108, & The U.S. (Metropolitan Records) Not Z103 who broke both Joee & Myself into the Freestyle Music Scene, in 1995-1996.

It is absolutely disgusting. As a freestyle fan and a Z103 listener I am appalled and insulted that the show was cancelled. Z103 was the last Toronto station that seemed to be listening to ALL of their listeners and catered to everyone as much as they could. To cancel the show is a slap in the face to the listeners who support the show and the station, to the musicians who work so hard to put out new music, to the club goers and dj's who support the music outside of the show.

How many new Canadian freestyle artists have come out in the past few years that have recognition both in Canada and the US not to mention in Europe? These local talents that work so hard to put out music and help the station fulfill their canadian content requirements didn't deserve to have the only known showcase for their music and talent be shut down.

Tony Monaco ran this incredible show for nearly 9 years. Does that not mean anything to the radio station? Music listeners are fickle people. It's been proven. Just think of the popularity songs like Macarena enjoyed when they first were played, and now any dj who plays that song will instantly clear the dance floor and irritate the listeners. So for a show that is specifically geared to one genre of music that has lasted more than your average 30 seconds should have said something to the powers that be at Z. Clearly a loyal and dedicated listenership that has tuned into this show almost religiously, every Sunday for the past 9 years deserved a little more respect and credit than what we got.

Have there been complaints about the show? Sure. No one can make everyone happy all the time. But, and this is a HUGE but, the complaints were never that the show was on the air. The complaints were about wanting a wider range of freestyle to be played. The complaints were about people who wanted to hear more old school than new and vice versa. The complaints were for a longer show; 2 hours instead of one. All of these 'complaints' were towards improving the show; they were fans saying they WANTED MORE not less freestyle music. Understandably, Tony Monaco's hands were tied in terms of some of these requests. He can't ignore CRTC can con regulations, he can't arbitrarily increase his show from one hour to two. ANd not even allowing a farewell show is a slap in the face to a man who has been doing this show for so long. Who else comes in on a Sunday so they can work for one hour?

All the money the station made from promoting concerts like the Invasions at the Docks, from the CD compilations. That was on the back of freestyle and dance music. It wasn't from pop, it wasn't from rock, and it sure as hell wasn't from hip hop. Britney Spears, 50 cent, and Kid Rock weren't giving up royalties to the station. Open up their cd's. When you read the liner notes, tell me if you see Z103 or Tony Monaco mentioned the way you do in Elissa's cd's, or Joee's. Go to their websites and see links to Z103 like you do on Zoe's site, and here on ClubFreestyle. You don't. And you know why? Because those artists don't care if Z plays their music or not. If Z103 doesn't play their music there are a million and one other stations who will. They don't need to help promote a radio station's listenership by mentioning them, or providing links to them.

And this is the gratitude that people like Zoe, Joee and Elissa get. This is the thanks that the fans and listeners get. This is the thanks that event goers and Cd buyers get. This is the thanks for the advertising money that we as radio station listeners help get. As our listenership increases so do the advertising rates for those time slots.

Well, I for one will be sending my complaint letter to Z103 for this filthy way of treating a long standing listener and fan. I suggest that all of you do the same. It doesn't matter what kind of freestyle you prefer, it doesn't matter if you are rival artists. This is the time for ALL freestyle fans to band together and get back the ONLY consistent freestyle show back on the air. WE need to show Z103 who is boss. Cause it's not them, it's the listeners; it's US!! Without the listeners, the much needed advertising dollars they get to charge for my rating number doesn't exist. I for one will be BOYCOTTING Z103 in ENTIRETY. No more morning show on my drive in to work, no more Z103 at my desk and no more Z103 on my drive home. It is off one of my presets and I will not listen to them until they restore the Frenzy to it's rightful place.; BACK ON THE AIR. As listeners and fans we deserved a lot more respect than we got and we deserve an apology.

So I hope all of you do the same. Boycott Z103 and delete it from your radio presets until our music is brought back; until the Frenzy is returned to it's rightful slot on Sunday afternoons. And don't just stop there. Write complaint letters to the station. Paul Evanov is the VP of Operations and the Program Director paule@z1035.com, Bill Evanov is the President bevanov@z1035.com, and the station is owned by the Evanov Group so I'm pretty sure those two emails are the powers that be at Z. And I hope our American members here will help us out and do the same. FLOOD the station with your complaint letters. Our voices should and WILL be heard.

z is not about the listeners.. and this has proved it

honestly if anyone cares...I really don't think im gonna sleep well tonite....

Man, no more frenzy--STILL cant get over it...I dont think I ever will actually...thats like not having dance music as part of my life! :sosad

I did cry a bit today--just cuz I have so much love for it! (as corny as that sounds!)

Sara u know i'm with u on that... it makes me tear just thinking about it... dance music is such a huge part of my life... and for it to be taken away from me just like that... it hurts, i feel betrayed

Holy f**k I can't believe it...I guess now I won't be listening to Z at all cuz that was basically the only reason I would tune in :crap

this BLOWS looks like tony didnt even get a say in the frenzy's leaving. this means i have virtually no reason to listen to z103 for freestyle, if they do this to us they BETTER bring more dance music to regular rotation. i've noticed that this fall and winter there were a lot more dance songs played than spring / summer 2003. i'd like to see that trend continue because if pulling the frenzy off the air is the first step in taking apart the station's dance format, they will lose so many listeners.

not to mention.. what will happen to canadian freestyle in general if tony doesn't get a freestyle show on another radio station? all the toronto-area artists' lives seem to be at stake now unless they perhaps abandon canada and move to the u.s.

oh btw i'd like to add that i did not register myself on hotmail as FREENZIEDUDE @hotmail.com for no reason.

If it wasn't for the Frenzee, I would never have found CF! Tony mentioned the site on his show and that led me here. Thanks Monaco! 😉

yeah basically like Sonya, I only listened to the Frenzy when I did tune in... or the Plastique LTA's which is also gone...

Peter, thanks 🙂
