I'm not involved in the record business, so I don't know a lot of what's involved with releasing comps as opposed to an artists full lenght cd, but I have to ask.......

With all the talk of what's "wrong" with freestyle, do you think the large amount of compilations available could be one of the problems?

Think about it. If you were going to buy freestyle, and you needed songs by Stevie B., Nyasia, Sweet Sensation, George Lamond, Rockell, and Cynthia, would you buy 6 cds, one from each artist, or 1 or 2 comps that featured all the songs?

I hope the artists get a cut of what is made from the comps (probably need a magnifying glass to see that income, record companies take care of themselves first!) but I would think the artists get a bigger cut of what is made off of their own specific albums.

While I know a lot of stuff is out of print and hard to get, except on comps, I've gone into record stores and found cds for Cynthia, Rockell, Safire, Sweet Sensation, Stevie B., George Lamond, Joyce Sims, Johnny O., and others. They sit there while the comps go.

Anyone else see a problem?????
 
You k now wut that is so true. I never looked at like that and its so true i have more comps that individual full lengths cuz yeah there are actually a lot of freestyle comps and u can find even hard to finders on them sometime and they tend to be cheaper.
 
Ok, I'm the crazy one...if I'm lookng for a song by a certain artist, and I see it on a compilation, I buy it. But if I also find that artists cd and I don't have it, I buy it as well. So I have a lot of double, if not triple songs, but oh well.

Also, has anyone else ever noticd that half the time you can buy a compilation from one record company and find another comp by a diff company and yet the tracks are nearly the same?

yeah actually that is common and yeah if i know the artist has a lot of good songs then yeah i will by there full length too. Also i have songs on like so many cds but i also have a lot of remixes of the same song, but yeah i must have spring love on at least 17 cds...
 
it depends how many songs are on a cd that I like.for me, I only buy cds if they have more then 2 songs i like on em. with all music, not just freestyle. i usually only by Freestyle mixes anymore.sometimes Freestyle comps and sometimes Trance Mixes, and maaayybe a alternetive cd once in a blue moon. but i mainly by freestyle mixes.I like how they edit/mix and dub em. its always a surprise! lol
 
Compilations vs. single artist albums

I've been a dance music addict for over 25 years now....and I've yet to purchase a Single-Artist dance album where every song is a hit. The closest anyone has ever come would be Madonna...for even as big as Donna Summer was...she seldom had more than 2 or 3 songs on any of her albums that were any good. Much of the time there just seems to be a lot of filler.

I've worked for a music distributor in Westchester (The Freestyle Capital) for 10 years and various artist freestyle compilations, like Tommy Boy's Freestyle Greatest Beats series & Mic Mac's comps, outsold single artist compilations (like Coro, Cynthia & Johnny O) 20 to 1. The dance music buying public, it appears, likes to listen & dance to a variety of artists...and get bored easily of the same sound over and over again from the same artist. That's just a fact...and apart from a small handful of artists like Judy Torres, Cynthia, Coro, Stevie B etc...many freestyle artists were one or two hit wonders at best.

So it comes down to economics. Just like all businesses...they can only afford to stay in business if they manufacture products that people will buy. It takes quite a large sum of money to release & promote an album...so they need to earn enough profit from enough sales to make it worth the investment....and most MAJOR labels do not want to promote an album that will potentially sell only a couple of thousand copies....only indy labels can afford to do that..and even they have to watch their pennies.

As for artists making money from album sales. All I can say is that in order to earn money from album sales...you must own all or part of the publishing or retain ownership of the recording master. In most cases...artists do not write the songs but are only hired to vocalize it. Or in some unfortunate cases..in their excitement to get signed to a label...they sign all ownership of their songs to the label. And in most cases...the artists only made money from touring. It's sad to find out that some of our favorite singers do not have anything to show for their efforts years later...but that is very often the case.
 
One thing I know the *Artists do have, is Madd Love & Support from the fans. 😉

but Thanks to everyone that has shared this information with us. It tells me, and I'm sure it tells a lot more people, stuff that they really wanted/needed to know.
