FREESTYLE MUSIC
WHO COINED THE TERM FREESTYLE OR FREESTYLE MUSIC?????
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO TOUCHED OUR HEARTS AND IS NEVER SPOKEN ABOUT WITH THE BUZZZ HE/SHE CREATED IN THE MUSIC BIZZZZ?????

oh dear, I smell another long debatable thread!..LOLOL

Jellybean Benitez- He get's my vote. He was around in the late 70's and early 80's and worked a lot in the dance music scene, was responsible for a lot of tracks, and practically "gave" Madonna her signature sound for her debut album.

Aside from that, he might have branded the name Freestyle somewhere along his early career.

hmm, that is a very good choice Carlito. Although some will say Arthur Baker. Like I said, very debatable indeed.

did some searching on various sites...came up with these excerpts:

*Tony Butler who recorded as "Pretty Tony" and "Freestyle" ('freestyle' the genre in fact took its name from this pseudonym).

*DEBBIE DEB : WHEN I HEAR MUSIC- produced by Tony Butler
'Went to the disco, couldn't believe my eyes./ I looked on the dance floor, saw so many guys./ I asked myself, could this really be?/ Whether it is or not, I'm going to see.'

So bad they're good, the lyrics on When I Hear Music are not profound, but the song as a whole is everything a good club track should be. As disco was simmering and hip hop, electro and house were emerging in the early 80s, a new sub genre was forming that came to be known as freestyle. As a fresh fusion of all of the above, it was produced by the likes of "Pretty" Tony Butler, who was the mastermind behind this now-classic dance track. Featuring Debbie Deb and her Stacy Q-like energy over a raw electro beat, this song has the best bell-chiming melody ever and is a must-have for all old school electro funk enthusiasts.

*One of the most prolific and influential of the '80s electro artists, Miami- based producer Tony Butler recorded a string of popular club tracks on Power /Jam Packed and his own Music Specialist label in the mid-'80s, helping build the electro legacy that would give birth to Miami style bass music and freestyle (named after Butler's primary pseudonym), as well as influence '90s post-techno artists such as Autechre and Biochip C. Butler's earlier tracks under his own name are all electro classics, with singles such as "Fix It in the Mix", "Jam the Box" and "Get Some" exploring a thinner, more stripped-down sound similar to Man Parrish and Cybotron. Butler's tracks with Freestyle are perhaps the more well known, and include such club staples as "It's Automatic", "Don't Stop the Rock" and "The Party Has Begun". His more commercial, pop-oriented writing and production work with Trinere, Debbie Deb, and Shannon, however, remain his claim to fame. Butler continues to live and record in Miami.

i would say, arthur baker, john robie, jellybean, tony buttler, bambatta, latin rascals..coined the term..When jellybean was djing at the fun house you who hear the word freestyle, float around alot..the breakers would use that term...

I too have always felt that, even though there were songs in the genre prior to it being categorized as "Freestyle", that it took on the name "Freestyle" based on the efforts of Tony Butler and his group. The earliest I recall hearing the term was around the summer of 86. It was around this time that Tony Butler had 3 major projects (Trinere, Debbie Deb, and Freestyle) all dropping. So I guess in essence the term "Freestyle" as it relates to this music was originated out of Miami even though the music style was originated in New York.

the tony buttler freestyle name goes as far back as 1983....

Somebody phucking wake me up when this shit is ovaa.

-Sean Connery

all i know is it kinda just blended in for me..i went from a b boy (break dancer) into a freestyle dancer in a period of months..never really knowing or asking..who came up with the name freestyle?? i was breakdancing before "breakin" "wild style" and "beat street" hit the bigscreen..(im old school for real)but the next thing i knew...i wasnt spinning on my back anymore..or doing the suicidal flips onto my back that got me my nickname "taezee" i was dancing to a new thing called "freestyle" the first time i heard it called that was when "scars of love" and "running" came out..

*Insert Twilight Zone music here* :stoned

This is an interesting conversation goin on. Good for people like me that only got a bare hint of what the "Freestyle Genre" consisted of.

I've said it many times before but before I joined CF...I had no clue who most of the artists were. 😱
