On the news today, they said it had something to do with the "sex scandal" with the nyfd, and that it was not just green berets, but all green clothing.

The story was just on Fox 5, and they reported that the firefighters believe it is being used as a punishment against firefighters for the sex scandal that took place, where a woman claimed she was raped by fire fighters, and then recanted, and said the sex was consensual.

I don't remember the specifics of the "sex scandal" when it happened. It's possible that it took place at the fire dept., so that is why they are being "punished".

when I look online for stories about it, they all say that it is a "uniform" issue, and do not mention the sex story.

Fox 5 news today is the channel reporting the sex scandal angle of the story.
