Garfield
*I Can't Wait to see this*
I LOVE GARFIELD 😛
Release Date:
December 19th, 2003 (wide screen)
Release Date Note:
(2/26/03) Fox is positioning this family friendly kittie cat movie just two days after the December 17th release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, making this the first movie to dare to be scheduled in the same week as the intimidating trilogy closer. This 2003 release is also part of a year-long 25th anniversary celebration of the character, which was first published in newspaper comic strips in 1978.
Cast:
Breckin Meyer (Jon Arbuckle), Jennifer Love Hewitt; other cast, including the voices of Garfield and Odie, not announced yet.
Cast Notes:
(2/26/03) The "original" voice of Garfield (in the TV specials) was Lorenzo Music (who was also famous for providing the voice of Carlton the Doorman on TV's "Rhoda"), but he died of lung cancer in 2001. No official announcements have been made yet about the casting of either the human actors or the voices of the pets, but Coming Soon did receive an (unconfirmed) list of names last month that included John Goodman as the frontrunner for Garfield. That list was interesting in that there was at least one "Saturday Night Live" alumnus in the running for every single role mentioned besides Garfield. How reliable or truthful that list was should be confirmed if some of those names end up getting announced (which should be coming very soon). (2/28/03) Indeed... I called that pretty well. Just two days after I posted that, Fox has indeed announced that the role of Jon Arbuckle has gone to Breckin Meyer, star of Road Trip; with Jennifer Love Hewitt also costarring as his girlfriend. That neither Meyer nor Love were on that list suggests that it was probably just some 'Garfield' fan's wishful speculation... but I'll leave the link live for now. Let's see if all of that list's guesses were wrong.
Special Effects:
(2/26/03) This film will be live-action, with live-action cats and dogs playing Garfield and Odie, supplemented by CGI animation (which may be similar to what was done in Cats and Dogs and Fox's Dr. Dolittle movies. (2/28/03) It appears that the majority of the Garfield/Odie character work may indeed be mostly CGI, ala Scooby-Doo, though reports are persistent that some live animals are still likely to be used. The two approaches seem to exist on opposite ends of the realism scale... the question is basically whether the cat and dog will try to look like "real pets", or whether they will be near carbon copies of the way Jim Davis draws them, brought to life in 3-D. The continued references to them being CGI-heavy suggest the latter.
Based Upon:
This is the live-action movie version of the comic strip character "Garfield" created, written and illustrated by Jim Davis since 1978, as syndicated to newspapers by Universal Press, and reprinted in dozens of books. This movie is preceded by a series of animated TV specials.
Premise:
This film depicts the comic adventures of an overweight orange tabby cat, Garfield, who competes with a dog named Odie for the affection and attention of their human master, Jon Arbuckle (Meyer), when Odie is introduced into their home much to Garfield's disgust. When Odie is kidnapped by a mean dog trainer, however, Garfield feels responsible, so he gets off his favorite spot and gets into action to rescue his fellow pet... (Jennifer Love Hewitt plays Jon's "romantic interest")
Filming:
The live-action production of this movie is scheduled to start in March or April of 2003, which leaves a fairly short window for the CGI postproduction before Fox's target release date in December, 2003.
