Hey all,
I Just recieved a mixed CD from a DJ friend of mine out in Miami, along with the note, he asked me to listen objectivley and don't jump down his throught about the way he mixed one song. Well as I listened I was getting into my usual Freestyle Vibe UNTILL I HEARD THE NEXT MIX
he mixed in lumidee's I'll never leave. Sounded good as hell BUT. If The DJ'S continue to do that, would the new generation really ever know true Freestyle. Whats your opinion :confused

No, I dont think the new generation of kids will know the original "freestyle" sounds as we know it.

Like K7 said, "DESTROY & REBUILD"

We need a new sound and a new name.

I agree the new generation has no idea what freestyle really means when Freestyle ruled the NY airwaves and the only way you could really see the stars would be by going to the clubs to watch there shows or what it was like before lil suzy, lissette melendez, was around and that we used to be called disco fans by the metal heads who didnt aprreciate our music.

theres a saying that goes like this "teach a man about fishing he will learn how to feed himself, teach him how to fish on his own he will learn how to feed a town"

now what do i wanna say with this, that though the new generation of today dont know the real facts of freestyle like some of us know that grew up listening to it since the beginning but if we teach them the way, let them know who was who back in the days get them into the freestyle scene then they will know what freestyle is all about know what i mean?

the new generation needs to hear how it all began b4 jumpin into the new skool of today cuz if u play for them an old skool song of a certain artist the first question they probably ask is whos that? so to my point of view in order for the new generation to know what u and me know we need to teach them the way

New School should set an example to the young audience what Freestyle is all about. Today lots of acheivement of different sounds can be incorporated into Freestyle making it more radiant more explosive. The problem is...it takes alot of effort and teamwork to do this. We need more struggle more voices for it to be heard so it can capture ALL ears of all ages.

When this is done THEN they can get into the facts and how Freestyle came about and how great old school Freestyle really is.

Right now songs like Lumidee & Lasgo & rap/hip hop is taking over the air waves. Till new school plays on super major radio stations like KTU, Z100 etc...

New school needs to pave the way strong...and it takes effort, time and dedication. In my opinion we are seeing the beginning of the light...then will come the formation and big bang of the glorious sound we love so much across all homes again. Repeatedly, the way hip hop/dance songs are being played to a crisp.

Well I guess the way I look at it is, if DJ's continue to mix in no Freestyle or water down freestyle songs, how long will it be before the mix is no longer Freestyle and the people listening will never know the diffrence.

How can you appreciate the Future without knowing the past?

You all make a good point, but Hip/Hop and Rap Artist pride themselves on the struggles they had trying to get where they are Even the one's who never really experienced such struggles Have this pride.

Shouldn't the new generation know of the struggles Freestyle artist have gone through?

Just a thought. :confused

I feel the new generation will not understand what freestyle means because its what we lived and what we felt and what we were growing through. All generations came into thier own musically. Disco-Garage-House, Party Rap-Breakbeats-Hip hop-Rap Breakbeats-Club-Pop-freestyle. Each added thier drop in the bucket in the evolution of Dance in general. maybe, but it each was individual and great for that generation. The next generation appreciates what came before it just as every generation prior did to thiers.. learned from it and went forward and created what they could claim thiers. This group hasnt done that yet.... I feel they're on they're on track but just not there yet. House today has 10 + areas and one includes the techno-progressiveish-freesstyle like music but no one will label it freestyle. Its not, it wont be and thats OK. Im not saying not to make freestyle tracks..... by all means do. If thats what your feeling. But they will never know what freestyle really means cause they werent there. You can make a disco style track but it will never be the same. Even if the original artists came and did a mega album together. Its great if they sing thier old stuff but let them create something new the old way will it really sound as good? Its been done and not that good same today with freestyle. Ive heard old school artists come out with tracks and its good but the magic isnt there. The magic is still in its era. And thats what has to happen today. Kids need to find thier own magic, and its brewwing alright just they havent perfected thier spell. Thats when we'll hear it in every home and car it will be as common as rap or pop. it will be a catagory in its own right. Soon. And will it be called freestyle... dont know There will be a message board of course arguing its relation to freestyle I bet. Maybe it will have freestyle in the name like New-NEW-school freestyle......maybe NOT. Its all good I'll play it either way as long as its good!

If you didn't live it or experience it in the height of it all..
its's hard for someone to "relive" something they really didnt
live thru themselves in its present time..it can't possibly be
the same if you hear stories, cds, or see old footage..to have
lived the early freestyle dayz was something magical in its time,
when freestyle came to life..some were there and were mezmerized
from day one, with something new and unheard of..those who lived it,
can still feel it..and it means so much more, cuz they were there.

People, give me a phuckin' break!

Why are so many of you knockin' down the artists that are keeping the music alive, especially the "new generation" of Freestyle? Instead of critizing them, give them some credit, damn.

If it wasn't for their dedication and talented voices, where the hell would Freestyle be today? Don't get me wrong, I love the old-skool, but I'm tired of it as well. Let's push things forward.

Yeah, the new generation definitely know's what Freestyle is? Hell, I'm 26 and I know what Freestyle is, because I was around when it blew up. I'm sure I speak for 75% of the artists that are here right now.

Let's have Cynthia, Coro, Johnny O, TKA, Judy Torres, and many others sit in the back seat for a while and give the "newbies" some control over the wheel.

Face it, they are the ones that are working hard right now to have their music heard. If you don't like what you hear, at least support them in whatever they choose to do.

I mean, come on! It's 2003, not 1983 nor 1993.

i think taht all the new generation acts know what freestyle used
to be. Everyone knows Johnny O, Cynthia, Judy, TKA, etc. and I'm
sure that they listened to their styles. What is really hurting the
movement right now is the weak, weak production that is being
produced. Aside from a few acts that are starting to shine(Nu Image,
Ashey, etc.)there are no acts out there that make you really stop
and listen. Its all sounds the same. There is no creativity in the
studios. Im not giving up on the new school, but you really have to
sit back and wonder if everyone involved is giving 100% and is doing
this for the right reasons.........

Wait, I never said that new skool Artist were not able to push Freestyle forward, I think their are many Talented New Skool artist and I think they are doing a damn fine job To help Carry Freestyle.
My point was If DJ's and the record industies continue to promote non freestyle song in freestyle mixes, how long before people forget what real freestyle is. Old SKool New skool it's all Freestyle, BUT WE MUST REMEMBER WHERE IT ALL STARTED and give the Artist the RESPECT they deserve... :bangbang

Let's forget about old school and new school and just call it "FREESTYLE" 🙂 That way to avoid so much confusion. Yes? lol

The New school is definately keeping it Alive, no doubt
about that! I'm so Impressed with so many Artists and their
vocals, and their styles..its new..its a breath of fresh air!
We needed that! The younger generation will always be improving
and pushing this style forward! And you have to support & give
them Props because they're keeping it out there..One thing you
can't deny.. is the Original Freestyle Artists will always Shine
and will Always Remain Legendary in their own right. They Created
history with their Style, their Vocals, their Experimental Beats..
it was all new..unheard of and these Now Legends took a chance with
this Music..and for that they do Deserve Credit for that. There is
no Replacing What Freestyle Was back Then. That was Then, this is
Now..Completely different. But in the end, All Great music we just
can't get enough of! And we should continue to Support New & Old! 😉

When I'm at a club and thier mixin Freestyle, Once they mix in Hip/Hop my whole vibe is screwed. Im wondering if freestylers still young to freestyle get the same way wouldn't it push them away from freestyle.. Thus killing a only chance foe survival.

Old or NEW I will alway support Freestyle.

wait, wait wait!!!!

everything is getting blown way out of hand now!!!

people are taking the meaning of what the topic is about in a different direction.

the topic is "Do you think the new generation (kids of today that listen to music in general, not our freestyle music) really know what Freestyle is?

My neices for instance, wouldnt know what the hell freestyle is/was if it werent for me. she would hear it on the radio, but thats it. she doesnt listen to KTU, she listens to TOP 40. so, whatever they dont play, she wouldnt know.

this has nothing to do with "NEW SCHOOL FREESTYLE ARTISTS".

It has to do with FREESTYLE.

Like how my parents group with...."JAZZ" for instance. would our generation know anything about our parents music? probally not.
