Everyone is talking about bringing freestyle back. It's time we bring it forward and take it to another level. Don't just depend on the old. We need new faces, new voices. Like I said, how can you call old school a form of music that was created in the early eightees. If anything this is one of the newer genres around that has not tapped into many other multi media markets such as commercials, videos and radio in the proper fashion. How can you sell something you can't see. Other genres such as hip-hop reached it's break off point towards major exposure once it began to be aired on Yo MTV Raps. It gave a face to many other people beyond urban-formatted radio. Whether you were old or new, it gave hip-hop the ability to take off in a new way and created what is now a billion dollar music industry with it's own clothing lines, major radio play, TV programs, video shows, etc.... It has become a culture. This is what freestyle needs. This should be our dilema. How can we do this? The key to this lies in working together. An army of many fighting for the same cause, causes change. We have to use all avenues possible to create a resurgence like none before and realize one person alone can't bring back freestyle. That is out of our control. The public decides what's hot or not. So it's time to put it out into the masses. I'm not saying it's not possible. I support your cause. Time to work together!!!!!!!

I have to shake hands with you, because you see it the way I see it. UNITE and CONQUER!!!

You have all made very valid points here. Now let me give you MY perspective as an Artist's Manager:
My job right now is to get my artist the best record deal I can. Although she had a number of hits in the past, we are pretty much starting over. As much as I love FREESTYLE, a much better deal will be had with a radio friendly song. This is a business decision. Most artists, no matter what genre of music they start out with, dream of crossover success. This can not be done simply by following your heart and tastes these days as easily as once was. It is also a business decision. As we are getting ready to go to the studio to record, the songs I am soliciting are for "Dance - Pop" songs. Something that will go over in the clubs, appeal to her old fans as well as obtain new ones. The idea of "strength in numbers" by banding labels together will not make radio play songs that they would not ordinarily play anyway! Tastes in radio change every several years, you need to anticipated where it is going, not where it has been, otherwise, you will be stuck in a vacuum, playing the same venues for the same audiences. the trick is to keep those fans, while obtaining new ones. Not an easy trick...

I hate to say this but I think facing the truth is a "need" in life. Many years ago when I was growing up to Freestyle during it's biggest years Freestyle was all over, it was part of the style of the 80's and early 90's.Times have a changed and the "new whatever school" you wanna call it is NOT part of the era we are currently living in.Today it is techno,electronica,hip-hop or what have you, you get the point.
I honestly think that so much Freestyle was released when it was because IT WAS a good business decision at THAT time. Unfortunatley I think it will be tough for Freestyle to go back to where it was even though there are many worthy songs being produced nowadays. All I can say is keep trying while being true to the REAL sound of Freestyle also with QUALITY vocalists!!
As for former and Old School artists having a negative attitude towards it I consider that a shame. How one can lack appreciation for what made them who they are is beyond me.:sadsmile

Thank you my friend! SLIM GUIDO!!

As long as a freestyle mix is offered on the single; I could care less what dance-pop direction you which to take your artist towards.

Jack- I agree with you 100%.It was a good business decision then, and easy to geta deal. Atlantic and vendetta were two labels signing everything they could. Many good artists got lost in the shuffle then, too much product at one time. As for old school artists having a negative attitude, that is bs of them. However, if an old school artist doesn't make freestyle records now,it doesn't necessarily mean they are turning their back on the style of music that was a success foer them 15-20 years ago, they are just moving on. But yes, a lack of appreciation for that music by them is wrong

Thanks bass... I can almost guarantee it!

I know I will recieve a lot of flack for this guys but, my goodness would you give it a rest already. Freesstyle was great. Love it, live it, breath it and move on. Times have changed and you can either accept it or be left behind. Freestyle in my opinion is still alive its just changed. Listen to BreakBeat. ITS FREESTYLE!!!! Just modernized like everything else in life. Hip hop is different, R & B is different, Rock is different, EVEN CHRISTIAN MUSIC is different!. Everything in life evolves. Embrace its evolution and have fun with it. If anything is killing freestyle its the unwilling of others to grow and to bring it to new levels. For all those who are willing to be pioneers and try new things, I salute you and hope you never loose faith. PEACE.....

P.S. Nya drop me an email somtime. machetebros@hotmail.com.

Hey Willie (&more)
I am very glad you posted. We have known eachother for a long time. I remember in the 80's when I started and heard your 12" promo at my boys house. You had something different there. Much props to you. I do wish you do something new. You are right about some of these new school artists that are not humble and are cocky. I see it myself. Now I think I have been around long enough to not be considered new school but I got my little name out there in 1992 (started in 87). and I do consider my self old school. (I'm about your age man! LOL) There is some good new school and some bad as well. But back in the days there were good and bad also. Now adays everyone is a critic. LOL Willie Man I didnt start this topic to diss anyone or to take away anything from anyone. The thing is that I see some old school artists that do the shows and say "keep freestyle alive" and then diss it when they get off stage. Thats not cool. I know alot of singers move on and more power to them. If they can make it in other types of music i respect that. Marc Anthony did it, India did it, so did Kayel (K7) of TKA, and the list goes on. I'm not saying that its bad to do something else but i know alot of artists that are not doing anything or have tried other things and have not gone anywhere, and they feel that freestyle is a waste of time, hey if nothing is happening and you have nothing new out thats a waste of time as well. If freestyle was being added on KTU tomorrow i bet alot of the old schoolers would be back in the studios doing new freestyle. The old shool artists have alot of fans that would love to hear new music from them. Give the fans what they want. I am not claiming to have the answers to everything wrong with the Freestyle industry nor do I consider to be an expert, this is just an idea. I'll be the first to admit I "never" had a huge hit or major airplay on radio. But I have been around and experienced alot. I love the music, and even though sometimes i just get frustrated I know I still want to try. Remember you're only good as your last song. I dont know about the ego thing but I am down for whatever. I dont consider myself better or worse than anyone. Willie I wish you the best. I always have and always will.

Nya:
Hey mama I am not saying we cant try new things, I have tried everything myself, but I know what I am better at and that is freestyle. May never make me a million but i have fun doing it. LOL Nya you have had success I could only wish for. I am extremely proud of you. You never diss freestyle, and I admire you for it.

As far as that song you emailed me about. I didnt reply cause I was looking for completed tracks by newer artists for a new label i was helping out. I did a few tracks i produced but wanted to let the newbies shine on that one. Sorry if i didnt email you back. My bad. LOL As far as Safire's deal with Jellybean "YOU GO GIRL" I have always loved safires work. I wish her the best. I never got a copy of her last album but i only heard good things about it.
Nya i would love to do another song for you again. Artistik never really had the proper backing financially. But I dont want to make excuses. It was my dream to make a record company since highschool. I still have a demo you did with Ozzie, angel of clear touch, mike and jorge. A mid tempo pop record. ANyway i just would love to do something new with the oldschoolers. If not me producing it then I know tons of new producers who have the talent to do a great production. Nya I want you to travel like back in the days to brazil and florida etc. You have it in you. You are a great performer. I am here for you if you still wanna do something new. Lets do it right this time. !!! LOL

continued from last post above...

LaBettyBoop
I have never met you but have seen you all over the net. You have a great insight on this music since you are married to a source of it. As far as being humble? I dont know what o say about that. I feel that I am. I have no other way to be since I dont have any hits to be bragging about. LOL As far as nu schoolers not being humble thats something we cant teach them. They have to figuere that out themselves. My point is that I am trying to get some old school artists to record new stuff. But quality good stuff. Not cheesy material. Its got to be different but lets stick to a plan. I understand if someone doesnt want to do a new freestyle track. Fine thats ok. I cant make anyone do anything. Its just an idea. As far as veterans go, I am one. Been there since forever... LOL. But i keep at it and keep doing new stuff. Being an artist has been a childhood dream of mine and I always go towards my dreams. I dont stand for the new school or old school. I am here for freestyle. Thats all i am trying to do. Some good music to hopefully be heard and enjoyed by fans. I think I am very careful how I express myself. I dont understand how can someone get the wrong message here. I dont think I dissed anyone??? But its all good. Thanks for your input and ideas. This is what we need. If the new schoolers need a reality check then why not be taught by the oldschool...

I will finish this post later. LOL

when your ready I am ready will. let me know. thanks for responding. ahhh, Brazil..lol

Willie, I totally understand what you're trying to do. And trying to be different from everybody else. Plus trying to help others. NOTHING wrong with that! That's cool. And totally agree about NOT putting out any cheesy material. There are enough already in all music genres. Pleeeease! :crap

I look at it like this, people are always going to talk Willie. Old, New, Fat, Skinny, young, all nationalities, :lol but we can't stop that. Believe it or not, that's what makes the world go round! So maybe we should first concentrate on NOT worrying about an old freestyle artist dissing the music that MADE them at one time because that's on THEM! I think that leaves more room for the next artist to take over. :smirk Plus we don't really know what's behind their dissing freestyle. Maybe there were some very bad experiences that you don't know about. I don't know about either.

I look at it like this, and I tell my husband this all the time...."Don't talk your sh*t to anybody. Just do it. Because people are always going to be nosey and want to know what other people are doing and criticize. So to keep people out of your business, keep things to yourself. Let them wonder! I feel some people (not all) are just envious! That's a fact. Others aren't envious."

Oh by the way, we have met. My husband introduced us to eachother a while ago but with all that be going on, I think that's why you don't remember.

So good luck with what you want to do. I think it's a wonderful idea. I'll let my husband, Wil, comment later on tonight when he gets home from work.
