I am confused...

Why was Tony Moran's "On the Edge" as well as a re-release by Willie Valentin on Bad Boy Joe 3 considered new school?

If a song is remade or re-released does it get classified as such?

Just curious... :confused

No. it depends.

in this case....tony remade his "on the edge". made a couple of changes and added some things. even slowed it down a lil. That you would consider new school, only if he actually really updated it with a nu-school sound, which would be todays electro break influences. However this was produced a long time ago and was already on sal abbateillos (or shal i say salB) freestyle lives compilation on fever. this "onthe edge" doesnt stand up to the original as far as the energy goese.
Time and time again" By luis demon was also out around that time and on the same compilation.

willie valentines remake of issac's "in my heart" would also considered new school if it was more updated.he did however add some changes, but not that far from the original song.

these records like many still held that traditional sound. however there were other traditional productions who did include a change and updation in their sound. on top of that there were many california rooted break styled records included with new artist.
as far as artist, usually new school refers to a NEW generation of NEW artist that are on the scene and creating New records with a traditional sound or a nu-electro break sound or anything that is new.
ashley, nina, ZOE, nick colon, nu image, aby also (love the synth work on his song)......all that can be seen as new school.(yes even if you were part of a once pop group, now went solo and re-invented himself).

but without no disrespect....tony and "on the edge", willie valentine and even that song "in my heart", luis damon...the songs are now old school. The sound is now old school traditional, and the artist are most definetly old school, cuz they have been around for more than over a decade.

however ,
if for example : lisste melendez's Time passes by" (time warp mix) would of been added, which was also around the same time luis damon's and tonys records were and actually on the same compilation........"time passes by" (time warp) would of actually fallen under new school, since it did actually drop a new strong sythn, house scat and merged it with breaks..which is what is still being done today and that version of the song is still kicking ass as new skool..
the original "time passes by" traditional also kicked ass,but since it held a traditional sound would of fallen under old skool.
cuz we been ther and done that already.

and the most tricky part..when refering to "freestyle" in its time period..when you say new school freestyle..alot of people remember the new school change in the genre..the lisste melendez/corrina/ carlos berrios period in the early 90's. so somtimes when you say new school,, some people use that term to specificaly i.d that sound. old school and classic would be used to define anything before thattime period, before the micmac era.
usually the term people use to i.d. the real new school (1995-2003), of today would be the "new school traditional" and that term i hate "progressive" or Nu freestylebreaks/neo freestyle.(in orlando i recall they call it heartbreaks or heartbeats, if im correct.

but yes, new school refers to new artist with a new sound and new material. if they have old material usually its redone in thier own artistic way and infused with sounds that are current or classic but trendy. remember..ceartain freestyle elements that are used in good artsistic taste..never go out of fashion.

also..dont take it out on bad boi joe or gene rambola for having such records on the compilation. when they went out to get labels to suply them with new material, many labels also gave them material that maybe didnt get the exposure they needed the fisrt time around. on top of that, if you must know the behind the scnes DRAMA of that compilation (and many like them)....with a 2 week deadline..these guys put this compilation for you guys (the fans) so you can have something soon.
there were alot of other New school artist/break artist that would of been on this comp, but due to red tape, liscencing, and all other kinds of dramatic red tape from other record labels... unfortunatley did not make the dead line.

but hopefully, there will be more comps like this and thenext one will be filled with more "new school " artist and newer sounds.

oh also on the tony moran topic...he has had much success since that re-make of "on the edge"........he now most recently has had success with his house mix cd entittled MAZE, out of the club called maze in south beach. its on Centour records.

Jesus Christ...on the Edge remade again? First it was with India, then remade with Sa-Fire...then again? For what? What a waste of time...but what the heck right? Its a freebee. :rolleyes

but yes, new school refers to new artist with a new sound and new material.

Does that mean that Safire's "Eyes of a Stranger", Rockell's "Tears",or Cynthia's "Thinking About You" are not considered new school freestyle? By the way, I think the Bad Boy Joe CD should have put at least a few new freestyle songs by better known artist ex. Nyasia, Rockell, TKA, Cynthia, Noel, Lil Suzy, etc. But it was definetly a good move to put some newer freestyle into the hands of people who don't even know there is such a thing.

dj shymann, those songs you mentioned are NOT considered "old school". they have the "new school" sound and feel. just because its a few years old DOES NOT MEAN its "OLD". thats ludicrous!

Thats what I'm saying Kenny. Shouldn't the term "new school" be used to define freestyle that has that newer sound? not just the fact that they are new artists or that they are a few years old? "New School" and "old school"isn't used as slang for freestyle fans. ex. That song is played out or old school. I dont mean it like that. I mean old school sound and new school sound describing the music. So shouldn't some of the legendary artist that release new freestyle with a new sound be considered new school?

TY LE NOL!!!

mike,
as i mentioned if lissete melendez's (FOR EXAMPLE, and any other records holding a new sound, by old or new artist)"time passes by" time warp mix would of been added...it would of been considered new school, as far as the new sound/current sound goese. as it is still slammin in different pockets.

Cynthias "thinking about you", rockells "tears" are new school releases......but also fall on the "newschool traditional" lines of things.unlike other forms of "traditional" beats and sounds, these records are very basic in their structure and are what people have come to expect freestyle records to soundlike.they also hold that Robbins freestyle sound to them, although basic still hold like a crisp clean sound. this formula works for these records, butthat crisp clean sound doesnt really work for everyone. Some projects who hold this may come out to fabricated sounding and some people still like that old school roughness in their freestyle records, traditinal or nu breaks.it gives it more of an undergound feel.

However safires "Eyes of a stranger" is str8 up new school electrobreaks/freestyle.that song is awsome and should of had more remixes. Now if Rockells "what u did to me"(LINUS MIX), would of been added(ironicaly it came out before "tears"), that would of been included as "new school electrobreaks/freestyle).simply cuz the whole song structure is new and the sound is current and not what people expected a freestyle record to sound like. same goese with Cythias "SAVE YOUR LOVE FOR ME", although basic, still held new electro sounds to the synthisizer work, and that alone would of made it "new school electro breaks/freestyle".

i did say new school is PRODOMINANTLY a new generation of artist with a new sound and new original material. however i do remember including somewhere that i also said that it is also an older artist with a new sound a classic song remade with updated sounds and an artist's own artistic influences.

maybe i didnt add that to this exact post, but one that was similar and just got them confused. i write alot and tend to lose track of what i typed where.

dj shyman.......yes, if a record came out 5 years ago or close enough ..it is old. but it doese not really consider OLD SKOOL.
For example....i lost track of where i was at ..but there was this party and they promised they were going to play old school. it was 1998...and they started playing all this collage and planet rock beated records that were realesed though those previous eight years.

that is not OLD SCHOOL! REAL old school is anything that is past a 12 year period, as in classics.
when i hear old school, i dont wna hear denine........i wana hear debbie debs "cuz im searchin", Company b's "jam on me", Rios "hold me", cynthia roundstree"stop searching for love" joey kids "everything i own". REAL old school by REAL pioneers.

kenny: hmmmm what can i say when you put 1+1=2
salb + managment and booking+ the fever records roster and website+ the fact that ERIKA aint working for him cuz she came to florida+ all those events he has with fever freestyle related artist+ the knowledge and ceartain way he writes+ a good position at clubfreestyle.com = sal abatiello???
is there any chance that the former president of the leading top latinhiphop/freestyle label. the label atthe front lines of the whole latin freestyle movement, could possibly be also known as SALB.
thats what it looks like. how many sal's do you know that fit the profile.

i could be wrong..i dont know. but if i am right and salb is sal abateillo...in front of everyone..i bow down to the man, the legend and give my thanks, deepest respect and humiliations.

#2 "why go to another site? it will only bring you down and NO ONE in the INDUSTRY will RESPECT you".
kenny, i like you and think your cool. but those are strong words.

I JONPITO am GOING to write for the site that started it all for me.
PEOPLE in the INDUSTRY have had RESPECT for ME MANY MANY MANY YEARS. NOT ONLY In FREESTYLE POCKETS, BUT ALSO in the communities and pockets of HOUSE, TRANCE,HOPHOP and all other pockets of GLOBAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC FORMS.
If a ceartain pocket of freestyle people want to down play that or fail to recognize ,it is ok. I have the army of the NU-electro freestyle breaks, the electro breaks scene, the electro bass scene, the electro clash scene, the trance and progressive house scene, the gay scene and many other scenes that are rallying behind me as I speak. All scenes that are having major impacts around new york, florida, the south east california, london, france, germany and across the globe.
also participation of global radio stations, satilite radio, club owners, promoters, artist, club/venues and my teams television show.
Out of this will rise the fisrt steps of the NU-freestyle and latin breaks electro dance Movement for 2004.

I might loose respect from a few, but gain much more and out rank others in many ways.

I have always been known to help others, especially those with lo funds and have learned to dodge and jump through all the red tape and drama this industry has. TRUE freestyle PIONEERS remeber what things where like, especially for us young hispanics when they first started out with this freestyle thing. so now not only have i won them over and also gained their respect, but they also will not only open doors FOR ME, but for MY WHOLE GENERATION of freestyle, breaks, and dance artist and industry people.i have had, have and will continue to have respect and above all LOVE from many.

to read something like that actually kinda hurts, especially on a site that i have spent so manytimes coming to and sharing what i know and have learned with others.

i posted some of this info before on clubfreestyle.com, and i also posted how i didnt feel that websites should compete againts each other. instead help each other out as a link community, since all freestylewebsites up now each have a diferent structure.some are message board based, others are internet radio based, others just have info about other parts of the world.I believd in a whole community link for this whole genre of music. however..i dont find what i posted anywhere on this site. it must of not gone through or stoped by a moderator.
either way....everything that is blocked or lost, anyway people treat me or have treated me in the past 5 years good or bad, any attitudes expressed towards me.......will be aknowledged for the whole DANCE music community to see.

i might still show up to club freestyle and answer questions and help out other members of club freestyle that our in the industry with info or hook em up with things they might need.

i do hope to continue good ties with many companies and websites and unite this community once and for all.
As i have learned and teach others that we should not burn down bridges....you never know who you might need tomorow for that favor, job, or justthat GOOD WORD.

Coming from me those words should be soothing to others who might read this post....as i am known to be a musical war lord and purist.

francis, its already being writen and im also back to the world in about a month or month and a halph. not only to the fm.c, but to one with a whole new image and movment with a strugle.
