Talk about adding insult to injury.
With the Yankees on the verge of missing their first postseason in 13 years, Curt Schilling is making sure he sticks it to the Bombers - and the Big Apple - to the very end.
“The Yankees suck this year and (New Yorkers are) bitter and mad and they’re making excuses over that and now they got Tom (Brady) going down, so New York’s excited,” said Schilling while appearing on Boston’s WEEI radio network Tuesday. “It’s unfortunate, but when you crawl to the top of the pile you will have people trying to knock you down."
Schilling, the Red Sox ace who had season-ending shoulder surgery this June, sounded disgusted by New York’s pleasure in Brady’s injury.
“That’s okay because I was front row and center, when their dynasty ended,” said Schilling, who won World Series co-MVP as a pitcher on the Arizona Diamondbacks team that beat the Yankees in the 2001 Fall Classic. “They want us to be as bitter and mad and miserable as they are and unfortunately it’s not going to happen.”
Schilling also warned that any enjoyment in Brady’s season-ending injury from New York fans is premature.
“The sad part is going to be when they beat the Jets next week,” said Schilling, predicting as strong as an 11-5 finish for the Patriots this season. “I laughed the whole preseason listening to experts talking about (Matt) Cassel. I mean you really think (Belichick’s) the genius who everyone claims him to be and is just a rockhead when it comes to his backup quarterback? If Bill Belichik trusts Matt Cassel, how the hell could you not?”
Schilling has long been a villain in the eyes of New York sports fans, although some say they agree with his latest remarks.
“He’s saying the truth,” said Ariel Ramos, 17, a high school student at Kennedy in the Bronx. “I can’t be mad."
“As a Yankee fan, they the bit the big one this year,” said 33-year-old Pedro Rosa, a security guard from Brooklyn. “But (Schilling) should watch his mouth. Last time I checked Boston doesn’t have Manny Ramirez. As for Brady he’s right. What do they need him for? So they could go 18-1?”
