I do not know anything about this, but from what I have heard, its not cheap!

I have lyrics that I have written over the years that i consider Freestyle lyrics and have no where to send them in fear that they might get stolen since I dont have them copywritten!

Record the song, say on to tape or cd.Package it and mail it to yourself, it will be postmarked by the post office or other carrier...but never open it.You can even have them stamp the date on the flap of the envelope. That's proof right there ,it's called the poor man's copyright..in case someone should challenge you...you would have proof inside. Talk about cheap!! I don't know if it would hold water but I've heard this more than once though.Personally I think it would not be valid . :jumpr

the best way is the correct way writing a 35.00 check made payable to the "Register of copyrights"
and filing the correct form I use SR for sound recordings
If you want to copyright several songs as a collective work or compilation you can register them all under one check. send the check the form and 2 copies on disc to The Library of congress.
You can check thier website and download the forms as a pdf file @ www.copyright.gov

Thanks peeps! Ive heard of the poor mans copyright but wasnt sure if that would be acceptable. I thank you guys for the knowledge...

Thanks for the info soul. I have another question. Is it $35.00 per song or per material sent to them? lol

Dj Soul Posted The Only Copyright That Counts..
Alot Of Peeps Are Misled Thinking That An Ascap Or Bmi Letter Is Good But, That Only Gets You Money If Someone Uses Your Stuff Commercially.
If You Buy The Books For The Bizzzz, You Will Have A Copy Of All Forms And Then You Can Choose Yourself

its per song and the material covered in that song.. On the form it asks what you are copyrighting. On Sr its Sound Recording so lets say for Instance I made a track where I did the music and arrangements wrote the lyrics and sang it well Im copyrighting everything that way if later on I hear something that was used from my track be it lyric or a sample what ever I got backing that permission was needed from me. that is what the 35.00 covers in 6-8 weeks you will get a certificate of your copyright. and make sure you send it certified Ascap and BMI are for your royalty rights they help fight to get you paid by basically being a database for real listing you as the performer and owner of said works.. But you cant join either of them until you have 2 of your works published which mean out in print by a label and available in distribution or in other form of media that is accesible lets say a cable show or you've performed this work on stage or venue and it is publicly heard. People sometimes hear Oh you get paid from publishing yes it is true. You can sell your tracks but if you wrote it you dont have to give up your publishing rights. that why you need to copyright first to protect your work and then send it out to get heard and hopefully signed. Once that happens you can then get to ascap or bmi and make sure if it gets used again you will be paid. Cause if youdont the grimy labels will just say lemme buy this track off of you and if you didnt copyright it casue its searchable well they now own your track and can keep you from getting further paid its your word against thiers.... and if any one is in the process of getting some track signed spend the money and get a lawyer one thats in the entertainment field. Its not as expensive as you may think and in the long run Its gonna pay for it self.

Soul.....you are The Bomb!!! Yeah, I got stuff that's been done and just laying here but I dont want to go any further without copyrighting the material. There's also a book out about the industry by Donald Pressman that covers what you explained and more that i've been meaning to get but it was sold out. I'd advise anyone thats looking to get career in the business to get it. I can guess the title but I might be wrong so I would advise anyone to look it up under the author Donald Pressman. Thank's Soul!
