I was reading a post from this other website and somebody mentioned that freestyle compilations hurt the industry and only 12" singles help it. I thought that as long as freestyle is bought its good, whether its on a compilation or 12". What do you all think?

freestyle is freestyle whether it's on 12 inch or on a compilation.....these days, it's hard to get a good freestyle song on either....wasn't able to find the 12 inch of Freeze's "I.O.U" on vinyl...but i found it on a compilation....and the 12 inch i haven't heard since it first came out nearly 20 years ago....the way i see it, as long as i have it, i'm happy

I believe they hurt it (it was probably my post you read lol). I won't get into specifics....I'll simply say that compilations took attention away from individual songs, thus the desire to promote it properly. It became "let's throw on 12 songs...if most of them suck who cares...they're not being released as singles...as long as we have a few good songs, people will buy it" There are many other reasons for my dislike of compilations, but I'll stop here...

I see your point, and you know what I do? I would ask around like in these websites if a certain compilation is worth buying. Maybe the labels that make these compilations which only 2 or 3 songs out of 12 they put on are worth the entire cd get their act together and put on 12 good songs so their compilations will sell like hotcakes.

OK, let me give you an opinion from BOBBY "LA" LASERRA" of STRONG ISLAND RECORDS. He passed this along to me th other day at the beach.

"Compilations are worth the money and are by far more economical cheaper than releasing "singles". releasing a single costs so much money. they usually just sit in the store and many stores dont know what to do with them. Putting out a comp is by far worth the money becuase you have a selection to choose from. It costs the same amount to press a single as it does to press a whole album."

Hope that clears this up!!!

Bobby "LA" LaSerra has been in the business for almost 15 years and he knows the market very well. If you were a fan, would you but 15 singles at $5 a pop (equaling $75) or $15 for a comp with 15 songs? i would pick the comp. He saw alot of his singles just sit on the rack while seeing his comps practically fly out the door.

That's what I say too. I would rather pay $5 more for a compilation than a cd single for $5

BTW......Bobby also told me he has enough music for several other compilations (not freestyle, however) and he said he would go bankrupt if he were to release them as singles.
