Chicago Freestyle Radio Recap: January 4th, January 11th, 2002.
I know…it usually takes me a little while to get around to providing these recaps . I’d like to do them right after the show airs-now if I only could get out of my “real life” full-time job…
On Friday, January 4th, 2002, the show was dedicated to listeners’ choices of their favorite Freestyle tunes released in 2001. Listeners posted at Clubfreestyle.com and other sites, and called in to suggest their favorite cuts. It turned out to be not such a bad broad/webcast. Here are the details…
First of all, let me thank the morning participants: Tim the payphone guy, Jay Vito the new listener, fanaticjoe, Gino, AlexisAna, Ashley, keh, CPR-JLO, Mario5starr, Sami, Bassy and CHRTZ2. They all helped to comprise the playlist that you are about to read, and the show that was aired.
At 6am, I featured a Freestyle mix by Kid Heartbreak, who has disappeared recently, but dropped off some of his mixwork in 2001. Afterwards, we heard Marvin Gayes’ “National Anthem, 1983” (until Osama goes down),

At 8am, I aired a half-hour interview segment with Noel, one of the better phoners of 2001. During the interview, music included “Silent Morning”, “Will I Find True Love” and “The Question”. The last half-hour of the program featured…Nyasia…”True Love” (for keh)…Arlene and Chrissie…”Amigas”…George Lamond…”Lately”…Lissette Melendez…”Time Passes By-2001 Remix”…and Safire…”Eyes Of A Stranger” (for Tim).
Listeners must have still been celebrating the holidays, because I got more posts during the week than I did phone calls and posts throughout the show. Anyhow, it was a fun broadcast and I’m glad that 2001 provided enough new material to carry a three hour broadcast.
I should thank Willie Valentin, Flipzide, and Safire for outstanding full-length CDs this year and the many artists who put out singles in the past year. Hopefully albums will be forthcoming. On to the broadcast dated January 11th, 2002…
The single likely most important event that happened during the January 11th show was my venting over the American Music Awards broadcast which did not allow for any Freestyle/Dance music awards. I wondered out loud why our favorite artists continue to be ignored by the AMA, Billboard Magazine and other music award shows. A few songs later, listeners started to chime in with their thoughts…”Why isn’t there a Freestyle Music Awards Program?”. Two devoted cyber-listeners, Bassy and Keh decided that I was on to something. We spoke, traded e-mails and the result was an idea for a Freestyle Music Awards Radio/Webcast. The details can be found elsewhere on the internet, but me thinks that I opened a huge can of Freestyle worms. I hope that we can produce a worthwhile project.
At 6am, Tony “Boom Boom” Badea’s Freestyle Mix At Six, followed by Marvin Gaye’s 1983 National Anthem and then off we went into the Freestyle Universe…

After the interview, the last half-hour featured…Noel…”Will I Find True Love”…Safire…”You Said You Loved Me” (for Paradise)…Judy Torres…”Love You Will You Love Me”…and Legends of Style…”We Are The Ones”. I played just a bit of Donna Williams…”True Love Never Dies” (for Tim), but I ran out of time.
