Oh For the record I Love that Ashley Track The girl represents hard.

Thanks for the requests guys, let me try to explain the situation with new school material....Basically its a lot about politics and things like that....KTU is a Clear Channel owned station in the largest market in the country, NYC. Therefore the playlist is somewhat restricted right off the bat. After all, KTU is not catering to an audience of a half a million people of all ages and sexes. There is a clearly defined demograph of women, aged 25-54. So they can't just go around playing whatever they feel like playing. It's a very strict format that works no matter which way you hack it. We have an audience of roughly over 2 million and compete in a very competitive market (and do quite well). The problem with new school freestyle is that of lack of marketing skills and lack of promotion on the part of the record labels. I mean, let's face it, the new school songs that did make it on the air over the past couple of years: your Rockells and Cynthias and Collages, all backed by labels with enough money to properly promote the song. Now you might be saying "but how do you think back in 1986 all these songs became popular, because radio was willing to take a chance on them and look what it became"...Well the answer to that is that its not 1986 anymore and radio is an entirely different ballgame on the corporate level. Also, I don't see any new school labels hauling themselves to KTU for Wednesday music meetings where labels come to present their product for Frankie and Jeff to hear. How are they supposed to even be aware of something when nobody is there to show it to them? When a new school artist's label adopts an aggressive promotional campaign, then we'll see what happens, but until then, I don't see how new school will ever compete with more progressive newer-sounding dance music. As far as myself and my mix shows go, I can only do what I'm told. My job is to mix "classics".

Hmmm why don't they?...they should damnit! That way it's more exposed. Oh man :crap

Great explanation James Anthony So Cox Communication is a Small Station?
Just Curious.

"Well the answer to that is that its not 1986."

You are right, so why play the same music as 1986? Quite frankly, people are tired of listening to the same old stuff. There are other stations that play "newschool freestyle" that don't even fit into the "demographic" of listeners that they cater to, such as LatinoMix, a spanish radio station but they still support "newschool" artist. Why certain cds endorsed by KTU feature "newschool" songs but don't give them radio play. If the songs are good enough to be marketed and promoted on cds with the KTU logo on it, cds that have really aggresive promotional campaigns, why aren't they recieving radio play from the station. That is like Ford putting out a new car on the market but not letting people see it so they can buy it, then telling people that it is not marketed properly. Stop labeling music newschool and old school and label it as what it is, freestyle music. Music has no boundaries, only the boundaries that is placed upon it. No more excuses people. It is time that freestyle gets back the respect it deserves.

Why ask us what we want to here and then say, "No?" You should've just said, if you are a woman between the ages of 25-54 and you want to here an old school freestyle song from 1986 then tell us what song it would be? What about the rest of the freestyle fans that don't fit into that "demographic?" Freestyle caters to a different crowd, both male and female so it isn't fair to place this genre into a "demographic" of listeners that doesn't represent it correctly. I'm not a female, and when I here the shoutouts and callers on Sunday, there seems to be a lot more male callers than females.
????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Cox is by far a small corporation...we're a major broadcasting company. I've been in radio a lot longer than you James so I know how the whole corporate thing works. I know you say your demo is 25-54 female, but in reality for a chr station it's 18 -34 female. If that was the case...KTU would not be playing hip hop. You think the avg 54 yr old female wants to hear 50 cent? I think not, but like I said...I know where you're coming from. Just a question then...if you're job is to play the old school songs that are familiar to your 25-54 demo...then why would you mix "hard core lesser known" freestyle? Wouldn't the average listener not be familiar w/ them just like they wouldnt be familiar w/ new school freestyle? I'm not trying to start anything because I too work for corporate radio, it's just some of your answers & views contradict each other.

The fact of the matter whichever way you want to slice it is that my hands are tied in this situation. I don't dislike new school or any of its artists, and I wish I could do something about it. I think a lot of new school is great! But when I have the Program and Music director telling me what to do, I'm not about to rock the boat. Our attempts to incorporate any sort of new school in the past, with a few choice exceptions, is usually met with indifference by listeners. When Johnny Budz used to do his mixshow on Sunday nights, he used to play new school. What wound up happening? The hour wound up getting cut because all people did was call up and ask for old school. You can ask him, he'll tell you. He expressed the same frustrations to me a while back. As far as me getting away with mixing in some lesser-known old school tracks: the way I do my mixes, the songs get 2 minutes each. I can get away with doing a lesser known track, but surrounding it with the basic songs. It's my way of throwing the more hardcore freestyle fans a bone. Remember, this is what I'm told by my superiors: Your mixes are there to cater to the "average" freestyle fan. Someone who listens to KTU and as familiar with the songs we play. NOT someone like me, you or anybody else who posts on these boards who lives, eats and sleeps freestyle music. And when you break that down, the average freestyle/KTU listener doesn't have much regard for anything new school. In my opinion, can that be changed; maybe. But at this point in time I'm not in the position to be the revolutionary leader of the new school movement on KTU. In a couple of months that might change, but until then it can't be up to me, like I said, it has to be up to the LABELS and ARTISTS to pitch themselves to our programming department. Because you can tell people "call KTU and request new school freestyle", and a thousand people can call, and it will most certainly fall on deaf ears for two reasons: number one- phone ops only write down requests for songs that are on the playlist. Their job is to gauge how many requests come in for new music. Anyone who calls and requests anything else gets the generic answer "we'll try to get it on for you". Phone ops aren't going to run to the programming department with a piece of paper that says "1000 call for 'new school freestyle'" and even if they did, number two- there's no new school artists promoting themselves to our music programming people. Put together a kickass press kit, mail it in and make some phone calls. How do you think I got my shot to be a "mixmaster"; by going to them at least once a week and convincing them that I was the only person in the world that should be doing their mixes on Sunday nights. And it worked. I don't see why it can't work for some new school artists. As far as our demograph goes Rene G, it is, in fact 25-54, shifted up from 18-34 as it was in the past. KTU isn't a CHR format, we're a rhythmic format, and if you were to look us up in R&R or any other trade publication, we would be lumped in with hip hop stations, not Top 40 stations. The only "hip hop" KTU plays is crossover tracks like 50 cent, which don't even get added until way after they cross over on to other markets. In reference to what Manny said about CD's featuring new school songs being featured, but the songs not getting added: I guess you're referring to the Bad Boy Joe Vol 3 CD. Bad Boy Joe's people paid a LOT of money to have those commercials run on the air and the mix featured in Vic's show. That has nothing to do with getting a song added. Did it make programming aware that new school exists; maybe. But Bad Boy Joe's people spending thousands of dollars for radio spots isn't going to get a new school song added. One has nothing to do with the other. Like I said, its up to the artists and the labels. You say people are tired of hearing the old school stuff. But they're not. Simple as that. The average KTU Listener will NEVER get tired of the freestyle classics. Never. When TKA or Cynthia or Judy perform at clubs in the tri state area, the clubs are PACKED. Meanwhile, these people have probably seen Cynthia and Judy perform 10000 times, but it doesn't matter. KTU listeners have been listening to the same classics every day for the past 8 years, and our ratings are as high as ever.

Remember, there are new freestyle fans every day. There are a lot of young people that love the music now no matter how old it is. You talk to a lot of the fans from back in the days and they want to listen to new freestyle but will settle for listening to the older stuff because that is all they get and a lot of people support itin hopes that the support given to older freestyle will lead to support on new freestyle. Don't get me wrong, I can listen to older freestyle forever and still not get tired of it, but my point is that you can't blame new freestyle not getting played on "demographics." I applaud your efforts for keeping our music alive and I understand that you have nothing to do with the political side of radio.
