Can someone please tell me why Freestyle music and dance/Pop music is considered bubblegum music? and Rap and HipHop and R&B is considered singing from your lifes experience! I consider freestyle singing from your life's experience, heartaches, happiness etc.. I am so sick of hearing that same old crap! (sorry) lol. Watching the grammy's last night, I don't think any one should be calling anyone elses type of music bubblegum. don't get me wrong, I like my hiphop, rock, country and all that.

I would like to hear everyones opinion on this.

oh and another thing WHY was Oscar de la Hoya being nominated for a Grammy?

I guess I woke up with alot of questions today! lol

Nyasia ((~.~))

There are so many "whys" for the grammys last night its not even funny. Like Why did they telivise the Native American award but not rock? Boggles my mind 😉

I have no idea why Oscar De La Hoya was nominated. I personally think that CD sucked from the lil bit I heard of it.

I think that freestyle is sometimes considered "bubblegum" because nowadays most mainstream pop is about I love you, you hurt me, I'm sorry etc. Same as most freestyle.

Rap I guess is considered music about life experiences because media is narrow minded & assumes that every hip-hop artist was brought up in the projects & is a reformed crack dealer.

I personally agree with you that freestyle is more about life experiences to me than rap is.

Oh well now I am rambling time to end this post!

I have to agree with the point Dawn made...it's sad how the media assumes that rappers are from the projects and reformed crack dealers, but I also think that these rappers present themselves that way. They degrade women and show kids that it's ok for men to sell drugs and promote prostitution...what they don't say is that education is important and you can't get it if you spend time in jail..kids don't see the real side of these rappers until one of them is dead or going to prison...🙁

As for Oscar......what a waste...he should stick to boxing

GEORGE LAMOND

George Lamond is way more talented than Oscar De la Hoya,
when it comes down to singing(no boxing).Oscar is selling
cds because of his name not for his singing ability,If George Lamond was a big movie or sports star he would sell a million cds and be nominated for a grammy.

PAULO

YEAH, AS USUAL the friggin media.......

i dunno..i missed the awards last night...BUT i did hear how Eminem decided to become the "GOOD CORPORATE BOY" and not bash the awards when he won....figures. He writes a few songs about how he doesnt care about them..but OH HE WINS..and BOOM...thanks for seeing past the controversey? lmao!

wow i just went off like i actually cared? wtf it must be too early...or im just burnt from this week of work

I think I laughed really hard when I saw that Oscar de la Hoya was nominated for a Grammy. Come on...why is he trying so hard to be like Enrique Iglesias? The video...help!

As per the bubblegum issue...I really think that they should narrow down the bubblegum name calling to strictly people like Britney Spears. Oh, please..."I'm stronger"...than what? Mickey mouse club girl or Christina Aguilera? Spare me the crappy lyrics. The only thing going for her is that she has a really fit body.

i think the Grammy's is mainly a bunch of CRAP! They finally broadcasted the Hip-Hop/Rap category on National TV after all these years! I remember JAY Z won that GRAMMY but didn't show up becuz they wouldn't give the category it's own recognition at that time.

Nyasia, I agree with you on questiong Oscar getting a Grammy nominee....I was wacthing ti like "WHAT?!?!?!?" that's wack! The unexpected always happens.

I never pay any attention to these award ceremonies really I think they are highly over-rated and are nothing but and ran thru favoritism and money.....

ITS PATHETIC

the media this and bubblegum that. i'm sick of the phrase "bubblegum" music. oscar de la hoya gets nominated for a grammy, eminem becomes a good boy, and what does freestyle get? nothing. hip-hop was once thought of as a fad that would eventually fade like mc hammers career. but it didn't (mc's did though for the record) freestyle has been around for how long now (over a decade!) and it hasn't faded away. on the contrary, its grown. so with this growth all over the place you'd think the music industry would catch on and say that this music isn't so bad after all, but they're just too busy looking at britney spears chest too see that freestyle is in a category of its own. i love freestyle and the artists who bring it to the table. what i hate is the industry that brings it down. (please forgive the sarchasm)

bottom line money talk the b.s. walks---"bubble gum" music- term used to discribe the dance tunes bought by teenagers between the age of 12-16, mostly tunes that describe teenage love, loss of love and the boyfriend hurt me-girlfriend hurt me etc....
Hip hop is organized and some what united, even though most artists are not from the "hood", it is still a cultural and political form of expression.
For the most part freestyle is still unorganized and basically holding itself back, just look at the message board is mostly "old" skool vs. "new" skool, instead of backing new artists, they tend to get critized due to the "planet rock" beats and the fact that because new artists may use "house" beats, they are told they are not freestyle..... hmmmmm didn't see the hip hop community come down on wycliff just cuz he used kenny rogers or celia cruz on his tracks....
Nyasia, keep doing what your doing!!!!!
Leaders don't chose their followers, the followers chose the leaders.

Synbad you got a point. I mean look at hip hop. I doubt anyone from Sugar Hill Gang to Public Enemy to Run DMC to Stetsasonic is tripping 'cos of what Wyclef, Master P, Juvenile, or Dr. Dre is doing. Their music has changed so dramatically. So Freestyle has progressed a little. In order for anything to keep existing it needs to evolve. The dinosaurs are a prime example. I doubt a turtle or an alligator is happy with what it is. I'm sure the alligator would rather be a T-Rex & the turtle would be happier if he was a Brontosaurus. But they evolved. They are here to stay. I myself am not a big fan of Nu-Style but I won't hate on it. If it wasn't for the Nu-Style, Freestyle would pretty much be in a coma. So, let's chill & evolve. I am here saying "Freestyle's Here To Stay"....Peace!

I just hope there is some decent music out this summer.

Last year my son John (who was 3 at the time)learned all the words to "the thong song" & "who let the dogs out".

All the freestyle I own couldn't cure him of that overplayed radio crap!

Dawn:

I am in the same boat as you. My 4 1/2 yr old daughter has mastered the words to Mystikal's "Shake your Ass" and Ja Rules "Every Little thing you do." It doesn't matter how much freestyle I put on, she still goes back to that shit. I tell her that'll be the day she goes out of my house looking like those hoochies in the videos...she just laughs.

Bubblegum/Grammy's

The Grammys are always a joke. Remember the year that Jethro Tull was nominated (and won!) for heavy metal?!?! This year, I knew would be a joke when I saw Blue (Da Ba De) and Who Let The Dogs Out as best dance recordings! Are they kidding?

As for freestyle/bubblegum, I think it gets toss in that group because the lyrics aren't "political" or "serious". Once you have songs about abortion, destruction, war or other things, MAYBE the critics will see it differently. About 3 years ago, I went to dinner with my friend Tina, and her friend Javier, who had visiting relatives from Miami. We got on the topic of music and I said I liked Latin Freestyle. One cousin looked at me confused, turned to the second cousin and said "Freestyle?" and the second cousin replied, "you know, TKA, Judy Torres, ya know, bubblegum." I was so surprised by that opinion that I didn't know what to say!

I don't know about freestyle in particular but for pop/dance the image right now is very bubble gum because of Britney, Christina, NSYNC, Backstreet. The songs aren't about "serious" subjects like Eminem or Rage Against the Machine. Songs about love arent seen as important or thought provoking so unfortunately it gets stuck with that bubble gum label. And by the way, how the HELL did Oscar De La Hoya get a record deal?!?!

I agree with Dayer. My daughters are 12, 11 & 10 and believe it or not, when Mystikal "Shake Ya Ass" comes out on the radio or that reggae wannabe "it wasn't me" song comes out my daughters change the station. I don't expose my daughters to those kind of lyrics. I know that "it wasn't me" song isn't that bad, but I don't need my daughters hearing "Saw me Bangin' on the washroom floor". Here in SA they always play the "ASS" version of the song on the radio such as "Shake Ya Ass" & "Back Dat Ass Up", I've been to Chicago & Phoenix recently and they do not play "Shake Ya Ass" they play "Shake It Fast". But Dayer, my daughters would rather listen to Machine "For The Grace Of God", Lime "Angel Eyes" (Disco songs) Alisha "All Night Passion" & Lil Suzy or any Freestyle artist anytime of the day over "Who let them doggs out?". I guess it's 'cos my wife & I do not work, so we are constantly with them 24/7. We have to be the most luckiest parents in the world.

OMG i heard oscar's song today on the radio. wassup with that ???? i kinda liked him as a boxer

To Nyasia

Hi Nyasia,
I have a lot of your singles, I am the one, Take me Away, Now and Forever, the one produce by Charle Rock and Albert Cabrera, I bought your last cd way back, which I was mad pist cause, the remixes did not really move me, I guess it was MicMacs idea.
Nyasia...you have a great voice, you are so talented, and please I dont want to sound wacked...but, really I have seen you live and you are the bomb....
Why is it so hard for freestyle to stay alive.....I buy every cd, 12 inch, album, thats freestyle, that I like..........and being on this site,,,its cool to know that even though people think that freestyle is dead, it really isnt.
Freestyle lives in my heart, and what ever happens w/ the music, I have all of my vynil and I could still play it , and Nyasia, I wish you the best of luck,
Love you Jcee

Thank you Jcee

Thank you for the compliment. I think what happened with my album was that after "Who's got your Love" crossed over in Cali and then NY started to play it every half hour!!lol Marvin (President of MicMac) got too anxious and instead of waiting to make sure all the songs would come out just as good as the first two , he decided not to wait and throw it out as is. I personally like the songs on the album , but some of the songs could have used better production and more time on vocals. I don't think Freestyle will go away permenantly, it just hybernates until someone comes out with a new kickass sound!! lol until then we'll just bid our time right?! lol

Take care Jcee,

Nyasia
