Back in YOUR days, what freestyle songs was really popular? When you turned on the radio then, what would you hear? I ask many questions now, because I am doing this project for school. It is on Freestyle, and I am the ONLY one doing it...lol..I need as many responses as I can get for each thread I make...I need many answers, as many opinions...THANKS a BUNCH!😀

WOW back in the days! Major artists receiving massive airplay on dance & pop stations across the country were: SAFIRE, SWEET SENSATION, COVER GIRLS, TKA, GEORGE LAMOND, CYNTHIA.

we're talking about mid 80's to early 91, the height of the pioneers of freestyle music.

i put all my heart and soul into it (probabley the only project i ever did that on), it was memorable, i got to speak to a lot of the people in the freestyle world...a lot of people gave me lots of info and was so happy i wanted to know about it!!!!

Songs that were played the most, as far as I remember, were Let me be the one, One way love and Why ya wanna go. They were played more than any other songs as it remember it. Let Me Be The One takes the cake though. The old HOT 103 played it so much it's not even funny!! Funnier than that was it never got played out....it was that damn good!! 😛

Crystal...guess what sweety?

I'm gonna help you out! I have a bit of Freestyle Documentary on Tommy Boy Compilations, I will type my a$$ off and email it to you. (Can't PM it, because PM does not allow more than 1,000 characters 😛 )

So hit me up with PM (You box is full by the way so I can't PM you) with your email or hit me on IM.

I will start typing this tomorrow afternoon. So probably by Friday you will have some info, if its of value to you. 🙂

-Antonio

P.S: There is a slight problem, I don't have ALL Tommy Boy Compliations. I have a incomplete set, so the inserts inside start from #2 Compliation which is 1986 Freestyle Documentary and up.

For me it was "Please Don't Go," "Tender Heart," "Clave Rocks," "Show Me," and "Match Made Up In Heaven."

what is meant by "massive airplay"? I'd like to know for myself. How popular was freestyle back in the day? Can we compare its former popularity to the popularity of some major artists today on the radio (like pop artists)?

You will get to hear the following Freestyle songs when listening to 93.1 WDRQ in Detroit on any given day:

Rockell - Any song from her CD's
Johnny O - Fantasy Girl
Stevie B - Most of the songs from the Best of CD
George LaMond - Bad of the Heart
Lil Suzy - Take me in your arms and Real love
Collage - I'll be loving you
Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock, Looking for the perfect beat
Debbie Deb - When I hear music, Lookout weekend
Trinere - All night, How can we be wrong, I'll be all you'll ever need
Newcleus - Jam on it
Pretty Tony - Fix it in the mix, Jam the box

Keep requesting material from the old and new school artists but it's coming along slowly.

for me it was TKA, Judy Torres Safire, Giggles, myself(WHo's Got your love) ( everytime I walked with my son, he used to say, Mommy not you again!) so I guess they played it enough for him to get tired of it!!..lolol Cynthia, Coro, pretty much what you still hear today when they do play freestyle on KTU, for the exception of Giggles and myself, the freestyle playlist hasn't changed much!.lolol

Tran-man, well in the beginning, freestyle was born in the clubs and slowly made it's way to radio. i believe dance stations in miami and new york first gave freestyle airplay and it slowly began to catch on. Artist like SAFIRE, SWEET SENSATION, COVER GIRLS and a few others were signed on to major lables, which gave the artists even more exposure to pop stations.

most freestyle artists received airplay on dance stations(back then there were more dance stations then today), but not every artist received airplay on pop stations.

just about every freestyle artist had one or more top 40 hit, according to billboard magazine. Some artists, though very popular either never entered the top 100 charts or never entered the top 40 charts. only a handful had a number 1 hit, mostly ballads.

it was alot easier to get airplay for freestyle's artist back then then it is today. we definately had more support from radio, labels, media and FANS!

Only those who were old enough back then to follow freestyle music know how big the music was! i don't think today's younger generation fully understand the impact freestyle made.

Freestyle music videos, tv talk show appearances & performances, tours in clubs & venues across the country and the world. it was happening! But not every freestyle artists accomplished all of the above - some alot more then others.

any more questions????

WOW guys...You are GREAT!! I am sending a thousand of kisses to you!!...lmao...Oh gosh..great, great, great I sayyyyyy!! I hope you guys know, that you are a part of my project nowwwwww!!!..lol

Well when I was younger, I used to hear george lamond's "where does that leave love", coro- "cant let you go" , TKA- maria on the radio alot. Airplay wise, these stand out from the many others because I found these three played alot on many different local stations around my area at the time.
