Two mornings ago on ESPN Radio Mike and Mike in the Morning. They had a debate on which American pro athlete is famous around the world. The conclusion is Shaq. No NFL nor Baseball(except South/Latin America or japan).

So which American singers(active now) you think are big around the world. Even better, do you think there was a freestyle artist who had world wide appeal?

Alicia Keys
Britney
Eminem

The Freestyle artist I think had World appeal was Lisa Lisa.

From what I understand, The Cover Girls were huge in Japan. Show Me was a huge hit.

As for American singers big over seas, Madonna.

The Cover Girls seem like they have some world appeal. We all knew Madonna had world appeal. What artist of the past few yew years you think have worldwide appeal

Unfortunately there was never any freestyle artist who had "worldwide" appeal...no freestyle artist EVER became a star on the level of a Britney, NSync of Madonna because freestyle was largely big in a few US regions only due to the fact that most were indie label releases. The Cover Girls had nowhere near the success or worldwide exposure that Madonna had so it is impossible to compare them in the same sentence.

While some have managed to have their songs hit in other countries no one ever reached superstar status because to reach that level it takes money and power which usually comes from the backing of a major label. The majors that did have a freestyle act or two never gave them the same push that they gave to more "mainstream" artists, and quickly dropped freestyle acts like Corina, even while their music was apparently headed for success. None of the majors took dance music seriously then, or now for that matter. How sad....
