im not sure but are there 2 versions of the track? there was apparently an original version done in '86 but was it re-done a couple years later, or am i wrong
Vinss-T said:oh, thought it was betty who sang hooked on you. ok then thanks chuck that helped a lot now i kno who they are LOL
No - you are 100% correct. Most of the backups on "Hooked on You" were done by Jimi Tunnell, Cindy Mizelle, Yogi Lee and Audrey Wheeler. They were the most in-demand session background singers of the mid 80's and Jimi actually sang LEAD on several of freestyle's biggest classic hooks - Shannon's "Let The Music Play" and "Give Me Tonight" and Monet's "Come onto Me" and "My Heart Gets All the Breaks" (yup - his voice is not merely a backup vocalist in the hooks, he is the vocalist). It is sad because they are all such great singers but although Jimi, Audrey and Cindy released solo albums they never really went anywhere.StLouisFreestyle said:Not really a big deal, but... did they really do ANYTHING to the album when Sheila joined the group? I thought all they did was replace the cover photo. And I thought the backing vocals for the songs were all done by Sweet Sensation BUT "Hooked On You" because they weren't officially a group yet. Betty did the lead vocal with session singers including Jimi Tunnell, Cindy Mizelle, Yogi Lee, and Audrey Wheeler. It sounds like that IS Mari doing the "rap" part on the original but they just remixed it and cut that part out on the "new version". Are my facts all messed up???

I didn't know about the background singers. To me, the backing vocals on the re-release of "Hooked On You" sounded different to the original, so I assumed they added sheila's vocal to that track when it was re-released. I knew that sheila's vocals were not added to the debut cd.
I worked with a producer who worked with Monet and her photo was up on the wall -she definitely looked African American to me...speaking of Nayobe I recently pulled the old "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait" track out of mothballss and it really holds up - what a voice!!!Ivan Diller said:I saw Monet perform at 1018 once. They were great (she and her dancers). She looked African American, but could have been a dark-skinned Latina (like Nayobe).
Honestly, all of Nayobe's songs hold up. I was at a BBQ this weekend and "Please Don't Go" was played on the XM Satellite disco station and it is always, always the song that gets my title of "all-time favorite freestyle song."damianwild said:I worked with a producer who worked with Monet and her photo was up on the wall -she definitely looked African American to me...speaking of Nayobe I recently pulled the old "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait" track out of mothballss and it really holds up - what a voice!!!
Vinss-T said:oh, lots of background vocalists in hooked on you - i was wondering why that song has a different sound than the rest of sweet sensation tracks. interesting facts there damian thank you. speaking of backups who is the girl singing in george lamond - bad of the heart. great voice but i never got her name
Get out. Every time I hear that intro... chills... It just reminds me of being so young (not THAT young) and hearing it for the first time on some cassette my sister brought back with her from spring break in Florida. I went on a hunt to find the single and had the local store order the 12" for me. You can imagine how many times I played that record. Love it. Love the pleading, the West Side Story plotline, everything.ChuckD said:Really????
That is like, my least fave Nayobe song, only because that's the only one I hear from her.
I love "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait" and "Second Chance For Love"
Just wanted to give info on MONET, it was a person, and her name is Bernadette Suarez. She is latina, and she grew up in Queens. I know her through my friend Stacey, they attended the same high school, and till my dying day I will always praise her voice. It has such a great range, and it just opens up when she lets loose. She taught me so much about singing, just by watching and listening to her. It helped me to grow as an artist. If I am ever able to contact her, I will tell her people still think of her.ChuckD said:I always wondered why they did that. One would think that they would want the singer whose name was on the record to have her voice on the hook.
and has anyone actually ever seen Monet? Her album didn't have her pic on it. Was it like a Giggles thing, where there were a bunch of "Monet's" performing under that name?
