this is kinda a dumb question but,do freestyle artists choose to sing freestyle cause they like it, or does some record companies,mangers...(whatever)tell them what kind of music to sing?
most artist who release a freestyle record, usually do cuz they actually do like it and grew up around it. alot of them grew up with freestyle culture and dance culture. so its a norm thing to do.
but alot of times a production team or label will discover a singer who doesnt know what direction to go into. if the production team is known to be freestyle, most likely they will convince that artist to sing freestyle before or at the same time while recording another style of music.
alot of other times both the artist, label, and production team dont know what direction to go into, so they just record both a freestyle track, house track, trance and whatever and releases it to see what makes it for them.
if the indi label gets picked up by a major...for the next release its usually up to the major who has the influence over the indi on what direction the artist should go next.
in reality those now recording "traditional " forms of freestyle are usually those who are rooted to it, grew up with it and are devoted to it. most new people who release freestyle/break records, the vocalist are usualy that..studio vocalist. they really dont know much about freestyle. all they know is that the sound is hot along side trance and that if that is what it takes to become pop and get shows and on the radio, well that is what they have to do.this would include some european acts with freestyle breaks remixes of their trance anthems.
However it is not like that for everyone. many vocalist of electro nu freestyle/breaks in the miami and california regions are also just as rooted to freestyle as those putting out "traditional " forms of freestyle. And those are the ones who make it and are seen more as ARTIST/nu-freestyle figures. they not only do the new type of freestyle for the fact of staying with the curent sound, but they record it for the tradition of what we have been doing for the past 21 years. But not only that, but also becouse it is the sound of our present day freestyle and dance music culture.
for instince, the artist i work with D'luna (china doll) or even me as a industry personel, we grew up running around the streets of miami during the early through late 80's. grew up with miami latin cuban influenced culture (although we aint cuban)and grew up with that sound that represented growing up in miami and that was freestyle. She at an early age was hanging in the studio with people like Al perez and the secret society band and cut her first freestyle record (which will be re-recorded and relased soon),perfomed and hanged at hot wheels and ricks bar.
i was skipping school and cruising in lowriders and hanging with djs and recordingstudio people.
since then, me her and many others been through so much...the early 90's rave movement, house movement, curcuit parties, all these movments and today we are on the cutting edge of the electro breaks world...but still the sound is freestyle and we are rooted to it from way back when.
and to us its a norm. We still hear the sound and it still represents the maimi region of today...eating aroz con pollo and cuban coffe, wich comes in handy after leaving space and level after the aftrehour parties.
so to us like so many..nu or traditional forms....its mostly a choice.
