Here's a lil' story i'd like to share with you...back in 1998, when i first got access to the internet, i remember coming across a Synthpop website...It talked about the history of that particular genre, and it had real audio clips of Synthpop songs (Depeche Mode, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, etc...) Since frames were not very commonly used in websites back then, this website didn't have any frames, so i had to scroll all the way to the bottom in order to check out the whole site... I remember that after several minutes i got all the way to the bottom of the page, and there the webmaster thanked everyone for visiting his website...and to those who hanged in there and were able to make it all the way to the bottom of the page, he had a 'special treat'...a real audio clip of what he claimed to be a rare and obscure Synthpop song...that song was none other than "Silent Morning" by Noel...I guess that since "Silent Morning" is produced by Paul Robb, who also produced "Running" and "What's on your mind" by Information Society, this person was able to notice the similarity in style between those songs, and classified "Silent Morning" as Synthpop...However, since "Silent Morning" wasn't really marketed towards the Synthpop crowd, i guess he thought the song was rare... I thought it was so funny that a song that to us Freestylers is a very popular song, to that person it was a rare Synthpop song...I never came across that particular website again ever since that day...i do not remember its name, so i wonder if it still exists.
 
i had always considered "silent morning" as alternative dance ("synthpop" as you call it) listen to it along with songs from cause & effect, depeche mode and pet shop boys and it fits right in😉 i didn't think "silent" was freestyle until i saw it on THUMP's 'latin hip-hop bass bomb'
 
Silent Morning is freestyle for 3 reasons:

the lyrics are dramatic dealing with romance (a freestyle require ment)

it was one of the highest chart topping hits in freestyle history and is heard in almost every f. style compilation

the beat as well as the rhythm are very freestyle as well as catchy.
 
ok, let me ad my 2 cents to this.

last year, when i was on an INFORMATION SOCIETY hunt, searching for its true genre (which is SYNTH-POP) i also bumped into some NOEL fans. they insisted that he was synth-pop (not knowing much about freestyle).

as I spent Friday night with NOEL as he did his club dates, he announced to the crowd that all of his musical releases from his first album WERE FREESTYLE.

now, some of you may consider his stuff "SYNTH POP", others would call it FREESTYLE. but, coming from the artist mouth "ITS FREESTYLE".
 
I think Noel's songs are Freestyle too, but with a Synth-Pop feel...just like Information Society's "Running", "Come With Me", etc...However, sometimes the artist has no idea of what kind of music he/she is recording, so it really doesn't matter what Noel thinks...I am more interested in finding out if Paul Robb, the producer of "Silent Morning" considers the song to be Freestyle or Synth-Pop.

Your right..*sometimes* if the artist comes after the fact...meaning after the song has been already written or produced. They sometimes have little idea of what style of track they're recording vocals to. This is especially true when its a new genre in the market or when its a mixture of genres (hybrid).
They most often will identify with or compare the track to a genre they feel most comfortable with especially if that genre brings them some form of exposure later on.

oooh and lets not forget that alot of songs have cross appeal.
Meaning they can fall into multiple classifications (genres).
Doesnt mean that that one or the other is wrong.

Back in the 80's, all this Dance stuff was all crossover, the lines were blurred. It was better for Freestyle back then.
 
again .. remember, back in the 80's when ALL of Noel's songs were out -- NOTHING was considered freestyle -- the term wasn't even USED for music -- it was simply used as a style of swimming and BMX -- I remember getting the old BMX PLUS and FREESTYLIN' Magazines ... and they had NOTHING to do with music - just bikes! LOL!

Also, a little trivia for you -- I remember hearing this in an interview about the song "Silent Morning" -- way back when ...

There's ONE particular reason that this song became so popular, and that is because of it's TITLE -- but, "Silent Morning" was NOT supposed to be the ORIGINAL title of the song -- it was something else -- 'Silent Morning' was used to make the song more recongnizable and mainstream -- does anyone besides ME know what it was ?

Ok, at one point, people thought it was "Silent Mourning" having to do with the AIDS epidemic, but a bullfighter? Huh? Personally, from the first time I heard it I took it as a break up song. Kenny, shout out to Noel to get his cute little butt up on this board and clear some things up, ok? LOL!

I guess I wasn't the only one who knew the REAL story behind the song !!!

Also, the song was rumored to have been done in all SPANISH as well, but that never happened either -- good thing, huh ?

A simple name change and an ENGLISH song and look what a hit it became.
