If not hiphop, a lot of stations were also trying to jump on the alternative bandwagon. I remember when Z100 was playing Nirvana and Pearl Jam a lot. But then again, that was going on since 90/91. Then there was another "surge" so to speak in 94 with Cobains death.

Well since I listen to many types of music, i was digging the alternative thing, even though I was into it before it became mainstream, but oh well. I'm always the oddball. LOL. Damn, I remember for a while there KTU was a COUNTRY music station.....lol

Well I know in part of NJ near the Pennsylvania border, there's a big country station from Penn...Y107...so I think for whatever reason, NYC figured they could get THIS area to listen as well. But alas they failed, and in February of 1996 buh-bye country and hello KTU.(love it or hate it, its here) LOL

Like I said, most radio suck. The reason is, it's all corperate!! Clear channel owns a zillion stations in the us, Infinity owns another zillion stations. Radio One owns whatever hip hop station that isn't owned by those companies. ABC/Disney(who owns PLJ, CD101.9)only own Adult, Hot AC and light jazz stations(they can't own stations like KTU, K-Rock, Hot 97, Z100. It hurts Disneys wholesome image!!🙄 ) Radio sucks!!!!!🙄

-Heck i'll forget I said 5 fav's how about 6 KTU get's love because they got freestyle still.

Back in the day or honorable mention's that would be somewhere on a list for me:
I-94 KIKI Honolulu (they used to play a whole lot of freestyle back in the day up until the late 90's)
93.1 The Q in Honolulu KQMQ they've changed to an old school station but they still play freestyle but peaked in 97 when they were still "New School" at the time.
Wild 94.9 in San Francisco
Wild 105.5 on Maui

all the stations mentioned are tyte.... but big ups to
KNON 89.3 - though its not freestyle the whole day, they play alot for four hours (four of the tytest hours in my day) and saturdays there almost 8 hours of good dance music...

and 106 SanAn. - started listenin to them about 4 or 5 months back via the internet... they play good dance music, new and old.

The best dance radio station in the country is definitely
Energy 92.7/5 in Chicago.
It is pure dance music. I have only heard two hip hop songs played on there and that was Family Affair by M. J. Blige and I'm Real by Jennifer Lopez. On KTU I have heard more than I care to hear during my week's stay here in NY.
 
HERE IS WHY ENERGY 92.7 SUCKS AND MY TOP PICKS

Energy 92.7 sucks for a couple reasons. they might play dance music all day but rarely ever touch a freestyle song even though freestyle was big in Chicago. second much of their dance music is not the best out there. finally their ratings suck big time to prove it all.

also can't say that the other all dance station, Party 93.1 in Miami is the best, because they play MUCH too little freestyle for the Miami market, though they are still better than Energy.

as for my list:
1. 106.7 Jamz San Antonio
2. KNON 89 Dallas (if only they played dance 24/7)
3. Mega 103.5 Miami, ok maybe not 100% dance station, but they play Miami style dance music when they do.
4. Party 93.1 Miami
5. C89 Seattle

if these stations were still around, they would better than any of the above:
Power 105.5 Sacramento (no station has played more freestyle in the last 5 years or so)
House Party 100.7 Houston (lots of great latin dance music, and all dance, all day)
