3 Brentwood schools locked down after gang fire

Three Brentwood schools were locked down Thursday after gunfire broke out between two gangs on a residential street a short distance from where students were outside for a gym class, officials said.

Suffolk police said the altercation took place on Stein Drive at 12:50 p.m., less than 200 feet from the district high school's athletic field.

A 19-year-old sitting in a white Honda was stabbed in the left forearm with a long machete or sword, police said. A member of the victim's gang then fired at the other group, striking a neighbor's white vinyl fence and a parked car.

The stabbing victim, who police declined to identify, was driven to Southside Hospital and was listed in serious condition. Second Squad Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said the teen had a severed tendon and nerves and needed surgery.

The sword or machete had gone "completely through his arm," Groneman said.

Meanwhile, a patrol officer answering another call saw the shooting suspect get into a car with his weapon. The officer gave chase for three blocks when the car came to a stop at Bishop Road and Ninth Avenue. Groneman said the suspect fled from the scene and into a wooded lot. Police scoured the area with helicopters and search dogs but were unable to locate him.

Brentwood Superintendent Michael Cohen said the district ordered lockdowns at the high school, South Middle School, and Oak Park Elementary. The lockdowns were lifted at 2 p.m., but all after-school programs were canceled, he said.

Police cordoned off at least three blocks along Stein Drive yesterday afternoon and recovered baseball bats, several knives and expended shotguns at the scene. As children arrived home on the street, police officers could be seen escorting them off the bus, through the crime scene and to their parents.

Residents said the block is frequented by students coming to and from the high school, and they often get into tiffs.

dam my hometown is going down.. i graduated from brentwood back then it was a tough school, but the most you had to worry about was a knife, not for nuthin at the risk of sounding racist its the influx of salvadorians the majority illegally here, forming gangs such as ms13 that has basically turned islip township and other long island towns into shooting zones, i hate when i go back and visit and see what it has become
