HOLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!😀 😎

to all of u

All of you who said that freestyle shouldn't have changed and it shouldn't change are right because freestyle music didn't die because of the way it sounded. It died back in '92 because rap got big and techno came out and alot of people just changed their preference. Then all the freestyle producers and labels thought it was the freestyle material at fault and it wasn't. All those who switched to those other types of music stopped listening to freestyle-I guess they weren't loyal freestyle fans like all of us on club freestyle. For now, I guess we're the only ones left. I mean, I listen to other music, but 99% of the time I listen to freestyle. I have almost every single freestyle record made and I'm still collecting. Alot of freestyle labels think by changing the sounds and everything, it'll come back-it won't-at least half of us think the new stuff sucks. Back in the days there might have been one or two songs that we didn't like cause maybe the beat was way to different. Freestyle is Freestyle and it should stay Freestyle. It shouldn't change like all these labels and producers are doing today. None of them are coming out with 12' vinyl, and you only get one version of the song, no bonus beats no accapellas-nothing else. It's all about the compilations which suck ass cause how can you like a song or appreciate it when you have 10 other artists on and you only pick out the best song to play and all the other ones don't get a chance. Compilations force artists to compete with eachother. You're lucky to find a compilation with one decent song on it. I mean when I get a new CD I flip through all the songs till I hear a really good one and since that one is usually the only good one on that CD the other ones go ignored. Mass production of these compilations is resulting in the quantity crap and no quality.

I know I'm going a little off the question, but my point is Freestyle should not have changed. Example 1, Artistik put out a new compilation, I don't know how may artists are on it, but I guarantee you, I might like only one or two, and probably the music intruments all sound the same. Example 2-If he thinks his music is so great why doesn't he put out one of the songs that are on the compilation on a single. He knows it won't get far, that's how much confidence he has in his artists when putting out a product like he does. That's why he and other labels have to put out compilations. They no longer believe in their productions and don't want to take the time or effort or money to properly promote or market one artist at a time.

Face the fact-Freestyle should have never changed.

P.S. I miss records😡

WOW.....U Are So FU**in Right Masters.....

Yes, thank God......another person speaking the truth....🙂...As said before, I basically never buy CD's and/or new school for those very reasons. I always hear from here or somewhere else about "this phat CD that just came out"...well, when I get to hear some I don't see how it is "phat". I also find one song at the most that I like. Also, as said before, thats why I am so happy I have all my vinyl. Thankfully there is almost an endless amount of old scholl vinyl out there to collect.....and most of it is slammin. So, you can take your CD's and your MP3's.......I'll enjoy getting the chills from grabbin one of my vinyls and throwing it on!! I must repeat myself one more time...We need to stop calling the new stuff freestyle....IT IS NOT FREESTYLE. 😛

SOMEBODY FINALLY WHO KNOWS WHATS UP...WORDS TO LIVE BY!!😎

Yeah....too many other "excuses" were given in the past as to why freestyle fell. From "crooked" producers to unfaithful radio stations. I don't believe that. While many factors were involved, the biggest factor as far as I'm concerned was the rise of Hip Hop. I remember 92 like it was yesterday. I remember Hot97 changing it's format to keep with the world-wide culture change. They began to play more hip hop and you got the "yo whats up G" audience calling in big time. (if that offends anybody, too bad!😛 ...trying to emphasize my point). I rememeber they brought in Vanilla Ice and Marky Mark to "sway" the audience to request the music that was "happening"......Next thing you know the enrire format changed in a matter of no time at all. So, who/what is to blame?? The rise of hip hop for sure. The "followers" of the world who wanted to fit in with the change in culture, willing to abandon the music they loved. I saw quite a few of my friends turn that route. It was a shame back then and it's a shame now. Some of my friends, as well as myself, stayed loyal through and through. We would even get the occasional, sarcastic (in a not-hurtful way) comment from other friends like "you still listen to that guido/gumba music?" Didn't bother me any...I loved the music and I was not about to abandon it to be a follower......I wonder how many people here truly listen to it ALL the time...at home...in there car, etc.....hhhmmmmm...😛

Anthony:

i gotta disagree wit u man! u can't blame hip hop for tha fall of freestyle. i am a fan of both freestyle as well as hip hop. back in tha day i listened to both. always did. i grew up wit both. i luv em both! i honestly think that tha biggest blow to freestyle was hot97 changing its format.

there was no reason to pull tha freestyle. songs that were coming out around '91-'92 were using hip hop loops and would've fit in perfectly with tha hip hop being played as well. this was tha decision of a radio station. u can't blame another form of music for blowin' up. hip hop & freestyle went hand & hand to me. from 2 w/o hats to Lisette & Greg Nice (Nice & Smooth) hookin' up on a track. they could've blown up TOGETHER! but it was tha decision of some company somewhere to drop freestyle from hot97's playlist. afterwards, many New Yorkers moved on and forgot about tha old freestyle sound and just considered it a thing of tha past.

New York was tha home of freestyle. where it was born & created. tha performers being young kids that we could relate to and look up to. they were kids from areas like Harlem, Brooklyn, & tha Bronx-just like us, being thrown into tha spotlight! we could relate to their styles, voices, and NY accents! LOL! they had a new sound that was different & without a doubt, HOT! there was just no reason to kill something that was still progressing. something that could've had a bigger & brighter future. a DAMN shame if u ask me! i'll neva understand it.

peace,
Mark

Good point Mark!! ....Although, I still say hip hop helped bring it down...The beats may have had similarities, but you are talking about 2 different forms of music...It cant be coincedence....Hey Martini, sorry...I feel the way that I do....I speak MY truth....not trying to offend anyone, honestly! I'm not someone who likes to cause any controversy.....but understand that I was there and I witnessed (seeing and hearing) what I witnessed...I put it the way I personally saw it...🙂

anthony... dont ever feel sorry for how you feel. feel sorry for your ignorance. 🙂

Hey Martini

Hey martini, it isn't ignorance. I have my opinions. If I don't like ghetto crap and you do (or whatever your problem is), thats fine. Speaking of ignorance, you don't even know me! I was about 23 when it all changed...how old were you....old enough to have witnessed and understood the change?? ...maybe I touched on a spot...sorry 🙂 If there is something else you need to say email me...this convo is not for the public...

I DONT THINK ITS FAIR TO BLAME ONE JAUNDRA OF MUSIC'S DOWNFALL WITH ANOTHERS SUCCESS.........

ESPECIALLY WHEN IN EARLY YEARS WAS REFFERED TO AS "LATIN HIP HOP"....ANT U KINDA CONTRADICTED YASELF A BIT........😛 😛

I HATE HATE HATE When People Say It Was LATIN HIP HOP.....There Was NOTHING Latin About it...Maybe A Little Element here And There....But NEVER EVER EVER LATIN HIP HOP....

And So the Pashon and Luv Fades????

Hey what's up to everyone...well I have to admit that this is a very interesting topic by far...and it is obvious that everyone has a wide range of opinions...First, it is important to point out that here in Chicago I find myself in a very unique situation...Freestyle is not even acknowledged as a genre of music anymore...I LOVE freestyle with my heart and soul but most people in the Chicago are don't feel that way (not even close)...Look, I believe Chi-town is a very interesting market...it resists change...back in da day...there's no denying that Freestyle was a huge hit...concerts were promoted and tapes and cds were being bought...but things simply changed...As many already know...Chicago is known for its bootlegged freestyle tapes with their unique designs and mixes...some of the best...but over the last 6 or seven years that too has dramatically changed...now malls and flea markets aren't even carrying freestyle like they used to...Moreover, most of the djs here would never play the new freestyle only a few gutsy ones becuz they fear that the people here will reject it...and to a greater extent they are correct...I'll ask my friends (girls and my niggas) "Yo, what y'all think of freestyle???" Most don't like it like they used to and many others say that there's no new stuff comin out...They think that these new compilations aren't any good becuz they lack pashon and emoshun...if u don't feel what u sing what s the point of it???....I don't mean to be pessimistic but it seems as if the new stuff will never make it here in Chicago...Also, many say that freestyle died becuz the quality of it dropped so dramatically...The melodies became too simple...the beats too weak and the vocals lacked talent and strength...What happened to the creativity...The average person who likes freestyle here in Chicago can't even name an artist or two...here, we concentrate on the song itself...it needs to be catchy and touch our heart in some sort of way...maybe we've been spoiled by "Missing Your Love" , "Remember the times", etc...to give u an example...I let some of my friends hear some of the new music that I d/l ed from the internet and there's no way that they would play this stuff...as for the old skool it will remain a legend here but it seems as though it may be forgotten soon except for a few of us...I am an aspiring artist but most ( I think all of the labels here have shut down ) ...I was told by many to give up on freestyle and go into pop and r and b...becuz freestyle has no future here...I will continue to follow my dreams and freestyle will always have a place with me no matter what I pursue...I apologive if i got off the subject...hopefully I brought up some insight...Peace!!!🙂

To Elear

It was Latin Hip Hop....
Always was Latin Hip Hop and always will be Latin Hip Hop.

To make my point, I will direct you to the preface of this site where it explains what is freestlyle.

Hip Hop didn't kill anything, fans not buying it slowed it down, nothing more nothing less.
Freestyle can't be dead, because this site still exist, therefore it is very much alive. Unless of course we all here on this site are the typing dead. In order to bring it back to the respectable level that many of us so desire, we need to simply make better music. Then go spread the word in a not so negative fashion amongst ourseleves first. Then we can talk about a resurgence into the mainstream.
Freestyle is not dead, it just became an underground sound. Underground meaning less than one million hardcore consumers. It's all math baby. Until we support each other and each one teach one it will remain an underground thing. Which is not all that bad. Sometimes the worst thing that can occur in music is oversaturation. The only ones who get rich off of that is the guys in the suits while artist suffer and then later have no where to turn to exploit their now over-exploited music.

Too much of any one thing is bad for you. Open your mind!

TyBless...I Live In The Bronx. If You Were To Bring It To Any Of These Puerto Ricans And Tell Them " Check Out This Latin Hip Hop Song? " They Would Look At You Like Somethin Was Wrong With U.
If You Call It that? Thats Fine...I Have No Prob With that...Im just Telling You That View :I

I agree with Elear..again!! It's not Latin Hip hop. First of all, it's not only Latin. Second of all, just because it contains hard beats that does not make it hip hop. Hip hop focuses on "rapping"...freestyle does not (occasionally has some in certain songs, but not the focus). Also, freestyle is about romance...always...Hip hop usually is not. Again, hard beats don't make it hip hop. And the same here: The large majority of my latino/a friends don't like freestyle....it's "dance shit" to them ....sad but true...It's freestyle and that's that!! 😛

Anthony, as in Acid?

Is that you pal? Let me straighten this out the best I can from my perspective. In Spanish Harlem, where I am from. When "One More Shot" came out and songs like that ( Hot Shot, Set It Off, etc..) to help launch this musical phenomenon now called freestyle, I can remember what it was like. It fed off off hip hop. The breakbeats were all the same the BPM's(Beats Per Minute) were increased and then you had the synth sounds that mimicked Salsa and Merengue vibes, hence the latin in latin hiphop. It wasn't only because mostly latino artist were doing it. (Full Force is as black as I am and they gave you some of freestlyes most defining moments) There is an amazing amount of diversity in the overall demographic of the artist who define(s)(d) what is freestyle. This is what it was called before it went mainstream. This is very early in the evolution of freestyle.

Now are you going to honestly say that the followers of hip hop at that time didn't feul this music? Are you also saying that hip hop lacks emotion and love? That's so untrue. The truth is that hip hop is the bastard son of all music. Weather it's Jay-Z with Big Pimpin with the Indian Music sample or LL Cool Jay making a ballad or three, (like) Hey Lover, I Need Love. Shit!.. that's damn near the same titles of a certain group I know!... You can't limit hiphop to any one genre. It goes where ever popular music goes.

I feel that this is a great example at making a point I have been trying to make, stick. If hip hop evolved, and freestyle came form the same breakbeat driven vein, then why shouldn't it evolve with popular music as well. The only thing that's holding it back is the resistance to change that currently grips it's consumers. Yet the fans will be the first to crumb the contemparary (old school) sound too! I can't fugure it out for the life of me.
This is what brings the artist to do whatever their hearts tell them as opposed to trying to cater to what seems to be a genre that still has issues or different opinions as to what is it's true identity. We all saw caught it at different stages in different places. I'm telling you how it was where most of your favorite and most successful (freestyle) artist are from, or passed through to get that freestyle flavor.
