My old lady used to always tell me
That life is like a game
The 365 days of the year
The 12 months
The 8,760 hours
Of those 365 days
A game of memory
Different from the animals of the jungle
Who act, work on, and respond to instinct
We are the only animals that act by memory
And it’s because without memories, my brother
We can’t live…
Anyway
Each of us
Decides how to play the game of life
Each of us gets to work with our time
And with our memory.
In January
I saw everybody with their resolutions
With their dreams and promises of change
I saw how a divorced mother worked 2 jobs
So she could support her kids
And keep them afloat
I also so how my people
Little by little
Lost the tradition of the 3 Holy Kings
In February
I saw how people celebrated Valentine’s Day
And they would give each other flowers and chocolate
While throughout the rest of the year they have been hypocrites to one
Another
In March
I saw how a lady was shot 12 times
While being car jacked for her SUV
But I also saw how a 7 year old kid saved his mother
From an automobile accident.
In April
I saw how the inmates from this country
Rioted and protested against the bad conditions
And their treatment
I also saw how a citizen bled to death in front of a hospital
Due to the lack of employees and equipment.
In May
I saw how proud father
Cause his son graduated high school with honors
And had been admitted to a foreign university
In June and July
The summer months
Believe it or not
I went to more funerals
Than to beach parties
And I saw mothers crying at the funeral home
Coronas, people pouring in the streets
Crocodile tears
The streets are bad my brother…
In August
I saw how classes started
And I saw schools without books
Kids without uniforms
Teachers that are unhappy
I saw an educational system, completely worthless
I saw, fear.
In September
I saw a man who murdered his wife
Then turned the gun on himself
Leaving his kids orphaned
I also saw government employees
Being jailed on charges of corruption
In October
I saw how a family was evicted from their home
That was built on government land
I saw how my neighbor was fired from his job
For political reasons
In November
I saw how a family celebrated Thanks Giving
With a succulent meal
When the day to give thanks to God
Is everyday
When I would see homeless that had nothing to eat
Nothing to celebrate for
And in December
While some where celebrating
I saw a mother worrying cause she had no money
To buy gifts for her kids
And I saw another mother crying
Cause it was the first Xmas without her murdered son
And during the end of the year, while the firecrackers rang
I saw a kid on the ground bleeding
Due to a stray bullet
People readying themselves for a new year
The same story
Different days
This was a brief summary of the 12 months of a year
Of 365 days
And with the passing of months I’ve noticed
That I belong to the most violent race on this planet
And just like a tiger does not kill another tiger
We should take up that example
And not kill one another
So go on and fight

And live in harmony
