Ever since Hot 97 went hiphop in 1993/1994 dance music fans had no where to turn to as far as Dance Music went…..Radio went completely hip hop/R&B and again this mainly due to LACK OF UNITY in the dance industry!! basically not having much of a voice on radio!!!.
NOT because a good portion of the dance music was bad!!
Because the majority of Hip Hop and R&B that was coming out was VERY BAD to but was still being played!!

When KTU came back in 1996 many had thought it was the rebirth of New York Dance Radio. Little did we know this station was nothing but a MAJOR disappointment to dance music fans. This station played nothing but the same old (mainly 70s/80s pop music) stale, boring, repeptive songs over and over and over. The same songs you here on every other station. So at that point I saw absolutely no need for this station on the dial except for there restricted times where they played new dance music (mainly Friday and Saturday/ Sunday nights) , but nothing realy during prime time hours.
They never realy played “real” dance music by real dance artist. Now what I mean buy that is (freestyle, house, trance, euro house), would be played very little during prime hours but the majority of the music was new pop like Britney Spears and new R&B…. However this is not dance music!! But has A LOT of $$$$ behind it and that’s all radio cares about is $$$$. Radio is NOT about M-U-S-I-C radio is about M-O-N-E-Y!!

All during prime hours over the course of the day all you heard was the same repetive old songs from the 70s and 80s basically old stale boring music that every other station plays 1 0r 2 some what new euro trance house song s (and the ONLY reason KTU would play 1 or 2 new euro house songs was because these songs where BIG over in Europe 6 months prior so KTU decieds to play them since there big over in europe. But they dont have the Balls to break new dance music first they wait for some other station to play it frist!) Then they take this 1 euro dance song and play it 50 times a day!!! so you get sick and tired of hearing it.
KTU would call them selves New York s Dance music leader….I would always get a kick out of this because they never realy played or supported dance music (freestyle, house, trance, etc). Except for restricted hours on Friday/Saturday/Sunday night.
Its funny because they sit and promote all these dance music clubs/ and freestyle events, but they never realy play any REAL dance music. They never realy have any dance artist up in the studio for interviews and breaking new dance music weather it was freestyle , house or any other form of dance music. They never realy had any dance music DJs for mixing or interviews (just over all they realy didn’t have much support for dance music). Yet you would hear a so called “dance mix” of a Cher song 20 times a day or a R&B song by Brian Mckight turned into a “dance mix” 20 times a day followed by Gloria Gayner’s I will survive for the 12 th time in one day…Just absolute horrible music! It has now been over 10 years….and still NOTHING has changed ..If anything KTU is playing even less real dance music now. I mean in the beginning they where playing VERY little so you can imagine now it almost NOTHING!
They never played much real dance music to begin with! But now they don’t even play real dance music Friday and Saturday nights! And have restricted the Friday and Saturday night DJs from breaking any new dance music! This was the only time we got to hear real dance music from real dance artist! So now even on Friday and Saturday nights all you hear is Cher, Whitney Houston, Barry White… just an absolute disappointment!! This station should not even be on the dial….It has absoutletly NO purpose they just play the same “pop” songs every other station plays. And then call them selves a “Dance Music Station” what a joke!!!

the sad thing is that KTU never supported local artists. once in a blue moon they would, then they boast about it saying they always support local talent.

yea, they will support local talent when they fork over a big enough cash deal!

this is why i wish someone will turn it around and i believe it will happen

The funny thing i remember was back when ktu signed on the air that very first day and then i heard for the third song Mariah Carey I knew right away i will be dissappionted being a fan of new dance and freestyle music. They had potential cause they had all the old on air personalities and the money to be a great station but didnt get the programming right.

Double you kay tee you dropped the be-be-beat and lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lost it...

I was excited when they first came on the air. But, it grew boring really quick. Then I heard Party 105.3 and had hope they'd strengthen their signal. They eventually did, but it was still too weak.

Then I moved to Florida, had a Hot 103/97 clone - which turned to rock a couple of months later.

I think all you guys need to get together with your friends and email KTU directly and tell how disappointed you are because they no longer play freestyle.

In the meantime I'll go grab a snack 😛

KTU SUCK ASS 4 REAL! f**k THEM ????, THEY NEVER GAVE A f**k ABOUT FREESTYLE ARTIST, BUT TREAD IN THEM IF THEY DON'T DO A FREE SHOW!!!!!! WOW I JUST SHOUT THEM NIGGAS OUT LMAO

That's what the corporate world does to radio stations these days. Corporate is such an ugly word.

Sal Party 93.1 if that was what you were refering to had been on the air for while playing great cutting edge dance music then they tweaked it by playing the old school freestyle and the ratings dropped and then switched to rock. That was a good station to listen to because it was always played on line.

That pretty much sums it up in one sentence. Unfortunately we are living in an age where radio is nothing but a commoditized business. Advertising $$ takes precedence over music. Corporate mentality dictates that stations sound completely watered down, playing only the most popular tracks over and over again. Dance music is only a small part of the picture. The same thing goes in the Top 40, R&B, HipHop, AC formats. It's just the same songs over and over again. Unfortunately at this point KTU is no exception.

The best thing I can offer you guys is a fun hour on Sunday nights with lots of jams you don't hear on the radio anymore, lots of original multi-edits and fun production work. Otherwise...well...what are ya gonna do!! 🙂

I gotta be tight lipped on it Pete right now. buy I am working on it...

bro...grow a pair and stand up to the station to play different stuff. That is why you are there right?...or did you forget why you are there?

Being a radio dj doesn't mean ass if you don't take the lead with what you play. It's just like an artist trying to paint a color picture with 2 palate choices, that being black and white.

I am not picking on you, because I know you are a nice kid, but one needs to make his own stand sooner or later. My advice is sooner or you will never grow and just be another sellout.

Trust me James being a radio dj doesn't mean dick, unless you are doing your own thing by introducing new things to the audience. Try being different with your stuff, you will grow as a dj.

Just one last thing and I will say this....the only time I heard freestyle music being played so-called properly was by and old school jock.

All thes new dudes who think they are the shit when it comes to playing freestyle are kidding themselves..why.....well they were not born yet or were under the age of 6 when it was all happening. This goes on to say with all the new production work too.

You had to be there to "get it"...people around my age know that that means.

Oh...IMO...all these bits and pieces and multi edits were cool back in the day because it too skill at the edit block or with excellent turntable skill, today it is done on a computer...enuff said.😕

bro you make me laugh...but for real listen to his words of truth.

Ya well, I'm not a radio dj but I think it is easier said than done. Sure it's nice to try something a little (let me emphasize "little") different, but when radio has become a corporate commodity (especially in the big cities) I would think you have some sort of limitations as what you can and can't play. If a playlist doesn't fit into the program of the radio execs, then the dj, just like everybody else, is expendable. Do you really think they give two shits if you're Grandmaster Sir F'n Mixalot?? You don't follow the agenda, your out the door. I'm sure there are plenty bottom-feeding dj's just itching to get their crack in radio. It's all about the money.

You don't like what they are playing, toon out. I do. Email 'em if you want, but in the end I really think it all falls on deaf ears.

Tony, from what I heard at the station, people that stand up there usually get ignored. James had introduced a lot of freestyle to the station as well as Johnny Budz. Right now, they are minimizing the playlist. pretty soon the only freestyle songs youll hear outside of James freestyle mixes will be TKA, Judy Torres, Cynthia, Johnny O, Shannon & the Covergirls.

The Truth of the Matter was KTU lost its decency after Frankie Blue left. Even in the beginning it wasnt a true dance station but at least it played some decent music.

I don't listen to ktu or any other ny station. they are all a disaster.

But let me take on a trip....we are talking about dance music..corp exec don't know shit about music, that is the dj's job, if the dj can't do what they are suppost to do well as you said their are others..right.

That is why the list of great dj's is short...

Kenny ktu is the titanic and lo and behold...iceberg port side.

...catch my drift.
