Yes! It's *that* question again. I am pretty new to this whole thing (though a fan of the music from long ago), so i have a lot of questions. In trying to get some old songs and make my own CD compilations...I am having a hard time crediting the right people to certain songs. i have read old debates over whether it is Peter Fontaine or NV who sings on the following: "Just Like The Wind", "Girl You Hear me Crying", and "The Way She Looks" At Me". Can someone tell me who sings what? I know there is a story behind all this, but it seems different people have different versions of the story, ans also disagreements over whose vocals are on which song. I'm trying to learn more about what's behind some of my fave old songs. Forgive me if this is a tired discussion, I am SO sorry!🙂 I have the High Power Records tapes with these songs, and they all just say NV, but I'm really confused! Thanks if you can answer!

There's no doubt the Peter Fontaine is the Original singer to The Way She Looks At Me, Just Like The Wind both on High Power, also the singer of You Are Angel and One Moment In Time. Now the first took song was remade by NV on NV's album but you can tell the difference NV is the original singer to Girl you hear me Crying, Crytal Water, and fantasy Love.
NV have soft vocals while Peter has a rough strong vocal. hope this helps

very true ......also Peter Fontaine wrote the way she looks at me and just like the wind....both are deffantly freestyle classics
Peter Fontain also wrote another night which was sung by artist Rienaldo which is also a freestyle classic
when he was with Tony Garcia high power records

Later on around 1993 1994 Peter Fontaine did some work with Micheal Kidd Gomez with you are an angel....

NV resung just like the wind... but Peter Fontaine is most deffantly the orginal singer and writer of both songs...just like the
wind and the way she looks at me
what ever happend to Peter Fontaine ? and NV? any one know?

That's a whole other can of worms I'm not sure if you want to open lol.

I've seen Peter her in Philly a few times and there's a rumor that he might work on something new, but that's purely speculation at this point lol. I sure hope he does cause he's amazing.

As far as I'm aware, Reinaldo sang the original "Another Night" and then Sammy Zone had remade it, but I don't think the remake ever got released. Thus Homer Jay's comment "whole other can of worms" is a good way of putting it.

Peter Fontaine has got to be one of the best writers in the genre. "The Way She Looks At Me" & "Just Like the Wind" are two straight up classics. And these songs are well over a decade and a half old. I saw some footage on "You Tube" of dude performing these songs. He certainly put on a great show, even started breakin' towards the end. How many freestyle performers y'all ever see do that. Makes me kinda wonder why is this guy not a part of any of these arena mega shows. He's old school, puts on a great show (from what I saw), and everyone I've ever met absolutely loves some of this guy's songs.

The biggest tragedy out of all this is that none of those people even know who sings those songs that they love so much. High Power didn't only do Peter Fontaine bogus by having others rerecord his songs, but did the genre bogus as well. It's confusing crap like this that has contributed to freestyle not being taken seriously by anyone.

Kid H....this is exactly what I read somewhere else. On another forum, while searching for info, is where I read this whole debate. It was before I came on here and joined...and someone there also said that freestyle isn't taken seriously and people aren't getting credit because stuff like this happened.

I have the Freestyle Vol 1 & 2 albums from High Power, and even though I thought it was Peter's voice on "The Way She Looks At Me" and "Just Like The Wind," it SAYS it is NV. You guys are saying NV re-did these songs...but I do not think the versions I have on my albums are the re-did ones, I think they are Peter. So...if that is the case, then why does it SAY NV? Is that some shady sh*t? I had read before that NV used to lip synch to these songs when it wasn't even them singing. Then I even read that "Girl You Hear Me Crying" isn't even really sung by NV either, but instead by the guy who wrote the song! I am soooo confused, LOL.

Thanks for your answers guys🙂

Alright hold on, I was unaware that there is a version of "The Way She Looks At Me" with NV's name on it. I guess sh*t is a bit more fowl than I gave it credit for. Can someone post that up as I would like to hear it and differentiate between the vocals. To be completely honest with y'all I don't even know for sure which version of "Just Like the Wind" I be playing. And "Girl You Hear Me Crying" got spin on top 40 radio. The artist that got credited was NV. The problem is far past "artist development". It's a new problem that could only exist in freestyle and that's "artist identity". There's nothing wrong with singing someone else's song as long as it's made clear that it is a cover of someone else's song and the beats/production behind it are different. What made this a crime was the fact that from what I've heard, the production/beats were the exact same (and maybe that's cuz High Power doesn't know anything other than planet rock & that other non planet sequence). It's one of the two on almost every High Power record.

Y'all gotta peep this remix of "The Way She Looks At Me" that I downloaded off one of those South American websites. The track was definitely some flame. I put it in this new mix CD that I've been working on for the last few months. I'm gonna upload some excerpts soon and I'll put up the section that has that. I'm sure some of y'all had to have heard that remix. It's off the hook!!!!! But on that website that I got it from, they have it listed under both Peter Fontaine and NV. It makes it almost impossible to even promote the music the right way as no one knows who to credit the song to. I had originally thought that they got it confused with "Just Like the Wind" but now I'm reading here that NV re-recorded "The Way She Looks At Me" and I don't know what to think.

Can someone tell me what version of "Just Like the Wind" I played in the Rockin that Freestyle intro. Go to www.myspace.com/kidheartbreakmusic and play the audio file titled "Rockin that Freestyle intro". It's a 5 minute excerpt and around the 2 or 3 minute mark, I threw it in. Which version is that?

LOL. This is just a big mess! The first person who answered on this thread...I'm not sure if I am misunderstanding what they said when they said NV did a remake. I don't know if they meant on "JLTW" or if they meant that song and also "TWSLAM." Now if those two songs are in fact remakes on the NV album itself, then fine...but on the Freestyle Vol 1 & 2 albums I have I really think it's Peter, but yet it states that it's NV...and then I think that's very misleading and wrong. Someone like me, who is just learning about these people and trying to be accurate can get really confused and believe things that aren't really the case.

Hey Abbi
i hear you on things confusing in this music. Especially when names & faces of freestyle are so non-existent (moreso back then, then now with the web). Look at the stories of expose, debbie deb, giggles etc. When a record was simply a name in a generic sleeve, how do you know whos really who?

It is fun to hear of such info tho. I find it interesting.

I find such discussion difficult to follow though. Maybe relate the track you are talking about with its corresponding cat#??? ie HPR-107, WAR-221 etc.

I find that High Power Records were the most confusing with the High Power releases, then the Warlock Reissues, the double AA feature artists on each side, and the names... oh my the names!
Here are some of the many TG pseudonymns I have in my collection....
TONY "DR. EDIT" GARCIA
TONY "DR. EDIT" GARCIA FEATURING LIL SUZY
TONY "DR. EDIT" GARCIA FEATURING N.V.
TONY "DR. EDIT" GARCIA FEATURING NATALIE
TONY "DR. EDIT" GARCIA FEATURING REINALD-O
TONY "DR. EDIT" GARCIA FEATURING WICKETT
TONY GARCIA FEAT. REINALD-O
TONY GARCIA FEATURING LIL' JOHANNA
TONY GARCIA FEATURING PETER FONTAINE
TONY GARCIA FEATURING REINALD-O
TONY GARCIA FEATURING WICKETT RICH
V/A TONY ''DR. EDIT'' GARCIA FEATURING REINALD-O B/W TONY ''DR. EDIT'' GARCIA FEATURING ECLIPSE

... AN ALPHABETICAL NIGHTMARE!!!!!
I am still never able to remember what I have b/c of all these name variants. So I opted to file them alphabetically according the VOCALIST and forget about TG! Various artists are various artists and stick together by release date or album title.

I pulled out the HP Vol dbl LP and never realized (as discussed here) that TWSLAM & JLTW were credited to NV on it.

There is only one person to blame in this situation and that is Tony "Dr Edit" Garcia.
He is the one that publishes the information and just like WWE's Vincent Kennedy Mc Mahon feels like he owns everything about the Artist that he signed.

Signed people!
Some to 10 year contracts.

To the victor goes the spoils.
Whoever is the winner in the end gets to write history the way the see fit!

Just ask both NV and Peter Fontaine.

How about Lil' Suzy "Real Love" vs. Lil' Johanna "Real Love". I guess that's not quite as bogus as it is made clear that it's a different artist singing it. The production is different also. I don't understand why Dr. Edit didn't do the other re-makes like that. It does make a huge difference.

By the way, I liked both versions of "Real Love". Does anyone have the inside scoop on what happened there?

Pretty simple.
Suzy left and he tried to capitalize on the gimmick with someone else.

Lil' Johanna sucked; Period!

And that record got a lot of spin out here if for no other reason than the fact that the 12" releases had began to slow down for freestyle. That one was on everyone's mixtape/CD. How old was she anyways at the time when "Real Love" came out (1996)?

That's Peter. Nv's version ('94 flava) sucked ass. I do remember someone telling me that the original versions' 12" it said NV but in the small print mentioned Peter for the vocals.

That was taken from a 12" that said NV on it. I think there might have been another song on the other side. I didn't check the small print.

Right, imagine if she was to read that. I would feel bad for bringin' the whole thing up to set it up for CPR. Seriously though, a lot of people liked her version of the song. I like that sometimes when freestyle artists do covers of other freestyle artist's songs as long as they got original material too. Joe Zangie "Broken Dreams" is another freestyle/freestyle remake that I like. That's one of my personal favorites. Pure Pleasure "Foolish Pride" was pretty good also.
