New York City's "92.3 Now" to launch Wednesday at 5
Two weeks after it unleashed “Amp 97.1” on Los Angeles, CBS announces another CHR conversion – this time at low-rated “92.3 K-Rock” WXRK. And just as it did in Los Angeles, it’s giving the market several days to get ready, and giving the K-Rock jocks time to adjust. Radio-Info hears that CBS salespeople are on the street now, talking about the coming switch to CHR as “Now.” K-Rock has moved 1.7-1.5-1.5 12+ in the last three Arbitron monthly PPM books, ranking 21st in the January survey. The rock station was Howard Stern’s flagship until he left at the end of 2005, when it tried fulltime talk as “Free FM.” It returned to rock in May 2007. CBS is now confirming the arrival of “92.3 Now” and opening up the website with a countdown, here.
 
It should be VERY exciting! It's been awhile since anyone has gone head to head against Z-100. And if they play a few dance tracks in there (not to the point of a Pulse 87 mind you) that Z ISN'T doing, then that's going to be the turning point!

I don't see this as a freestyle station though....hopefully like a Z-100 with a beat to it!

'KTU - marginal but it does play rhythmic beats.

So the question...
Are you counting the 2 Spanish stations (WSKQ & WCAA) as dance?

We still don't know the official verdict of 92.3 now although I see it more as a direct Z-100 competitor

Ya can't count Pulse and party 105 ... The reception simply just does not reach a large enough audience ..

True...but they are still in the region even with their limitations.

I guess it's because I live so high up that I can actually pull in Party 105 in The Bronx.....on 105.3!

As far as Z-100 dance mixes, I believe they still do them....not quite sure.
 
just what new york needs another top 40 station.... playing the same repetive music by the same repetive artist.... Beyonce, Kanye West, Pink, and Justin Timberlake.

FM radio is such a waste.....

CBS Radio said yesterday that it will turn K-Rock (WXRK-FM 92.3), the station that now airs them, from modern hard rock into 92.3 NOW, a Top 40 hits station to compete head-to-head with Clear Channel's highly rated Z100 (WHTZ-FM, 100.3). The switch is set for 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Opie and Anthony, who have been on and off of New York stations for years, headed K-Rock's highest-rated show. They were told yesterday that they would not be part of the new format.




"K-Rock has just informed us that our services are no longer needed," Opie announced via Twitter, saying his show was ranked No. 2 among men aged 18-49. "When I can talk," he added, "I will."

"For the first time in nearly 30 years, New York now has a choice for hit music," Dom Theodore, a CBS Radio vice president, said in a statement. "With 92.3 NOW FM, we're breaking the mold of the traditional radio station and creating a pure multimedia companion for today's music fans."

The station said its core artists would include Kanye West, Beyoncé, Pink and Justin Timberlake.

The move was not unexpected. CBS Radio has similarly reformatted several stations this year, including its talk radio station in Los Angeles, aiming to capture a younger demographic.

She hails from Philadelphia's Top 40 outlet WIOQ (Q-102) and starts on March 16th from 10A to 3P
 
If they want to compete against Z-100, they would have to do some dance adds that Z isn't doing at all.

That's my guess. I posted this on here because I am optimistic that somethings gotta give. Both stations won't survive by only playing the usual pop artists. Either Now 92.3 will be more rhythmic or Z might add more pop rock songs. Z has the pop audience cover so im betting that NOW will be more rhythmic oriented once it gets settled.

The trend in pop music has been to use more uptempo beats.That gives dance songs a better chance of being on the radi😵nly time will tell.
 
Okay....officially at 5:00 (March 11th), 92.3 K-Rock went over to HD-2 and the era of 92.3 Now had started with "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas as the first song.

The station sounds more "rhythmic" than Z-100 but just like the majority of radio there is that tendency of "repeats" going on. Besides, it's still early so more things will happen in the next few weeks or so.

I'm already finished with this new 92.3 NOW station. I gave it a good 3 hours of my time, and I've decided that I have no interest in becoming a regular listener of this station. I'm sure some of you will think that I am passing judgement on this station too quickly, but I don't think so. I'll tell you why.

I remember back in '96 when the "New KTU" signed on the air. After listening to KTU for the first 10 minutes I was really excited, and after 30 minutes I already knew that the "New KTU" was my new favorite radio station. I drove around all night blasting KTU, and I called everyone I knew to tell them the great news! That's how I want to react when a new FM station signs on the air in New York! Listening to 92.3 NOW for 3 whole hours, I felt NO excitement at all. It was more like... "OK, just a new station trying to imitate Z-100. Another station playing the same songs and artists we already hear on Z-100 and many other stations". (By the way, I'm not a KTU fan anymore either)

I just sent my comments to the station through their website, and my exact message is shown below:

"So, now NYC has another station playing the same songs & artists that we already hear on Z-100, KTU, Hot 97, and dozens of other stations around the country. What's the point in that?? I think New York needs something new and different on the FM dial. A station that plays genres of music that cannot be found anywhere else on the radio. We DON'T need another replica of Z-100 or WKTU! I predict that 92.3 NOW will soon be 92.3 GONE!!" 😡
