OK. Here's my review of this great concert! I always like to give a detailed and completely honest review of the freestyle shows I attend.
First I'll start by saying that my personal favorite was Judy Torres!! Her vocals blew the roof off the place, and her personality and positive energy always brighten the room. It was also great to hear her legendary freestyle hits with a couple of her "lost hits" mixed in as well. She also did her most recent dance hit "Faithfully" and it sounded great!
Lisette Melendez also did some great singing last night, and was probably my second favorite. Sa-Fire was awesome as always (great vocals and choreography), and Sweet Sensation was especially good last night as well. The Cover Girls did a very good performance, although I think one of the backround girls who joins in on some of the lead vocals was off key several times. On the other hand, Evelyn's leads were great!! I can't believe that The Cover Girls has been accused of "simply lipsynching to a record". It's clear to me that they sing LIVE at their performances. Joyce Simms did a nice job of singing "You're My All & All", and it was cool to have a little house music mixed in, with Maurice singing "This Is Acid".
Coro's performance was really good, and Stevie B. was better than I'd ever heard him before! When I saw him once at Mohegan Sun, he was off key alot, and even sang a whole song in a different key than the band was playing in. (Perhaps he was having trouble hearing his own voice or was just having an off night). Last night, I don't think it hit one bad note during the whole show! His performance was great and he showed he's definitely still got it! He proved why he's the "prince of freestyle"!
There were also 2 un-announced performances. Nayobe opened up the show with "Please Don't Go" (she sounded great), and Brenda K. Starr came up to sing "I Still Believe". She still has a great voice and she did a beautiful performance of that song.
I guess my least favorite performance of the evening was "Debbie Deb" singing "Lookout Weekend" and "When I Hear Music. Her performance was fun, and I like her songs, but she certainly wasn't as impressive as any of the other acts. She was either singing over a pre-recorded vocal track or had a another vocalist singing the lead with her, and her vocals were off on some parts. Also, she was clearly straining to hit several of the notes, and I think she just moved her lips at some points and let the "other voice" sing the notes. She also had the audience doing more of the singing than she did. Still, there were no performers at the concert who I didn't enjoy. I enjoyed all of the performances and I thought it was a great concert! In my opinion, it was even better than last year's show!!
