OK. Here's my review of this great concert! I always like to give a detailed and completely honest review of the freestyle shows I attend.
First I'll start by saying that my personal favorite was Judy Torres!! Her vocals blew the roof off the place, and her personality and positive energy always brighten the room. It was also great to hear her legendary freestyle hits with a couple of her "lost hits" mixed in as well. She also did her most recent dance hit "Faithfully" and it sounded great!
Lisette Melendez also did some great singing last night, and was probably my second favorite. Sa-Fire was awesome as always (great vocals and choreography), and Sweet Sensation was especially good last night as well. The Cover Girls did a very good performance, although I think one of the backround girls who joins in on some of the lead vocals was off key several times. On the other hand, Evelyn's leads were great!! I can't believe that The Cover Girls has been accused of "simply lipsynching to a record". It's clear to me that they sing LIVE at their performances. Joyce Simms did a nice job of singing "You're My All & All", and it was cool to have a little house music mixed in, with Maurice singing "This Is Acid".
Coro's performance was really good, and Stevie B. was better than I'd ever heard him before! When I saw him once at Mohegan Sun, he was off key alot, and even sang a whole song in a different key than the band was playing in. (Perhaps he was having trouble hearing his own voice or was just having an off night). Last night, I don't think it hit one bad note during the whole show! His performance was great and he showed he's definitely still got it! He proved why he's the "prince of freestyle"!
There were also 2 un-announced performances. Nayobe opened up the show with "Please Don't Go" (she sounded great), and Brenda K. Starr came up to sing "I Still Believe". She still has a great voice and she did a beautiful performance of that song.
I guess my least favorite performance of the evening was "Debbie Deb" singing "Lookout Weekend" and "When I Hear Music. Her performance was fun, and I like her songs, but she certainly wasn't as impressive as any of the other acts. She was either singing over a pre-recorded vocal track or had a another vocalist singing the lead with her, and her vocals were off on some parts. Also, she was clearly straining to hit several of the notes, and I think she just moved her lips at some points and let the "other voice" sing the notes. She also had the audience doing more of the singing than she did. Still, there were no performers at the concert who I didn't enjoy. I enjoyed all of the performances and I thought it was a great concert! In my opinion, it was even better than last year's show!!

As an added note, I don't get the impression that people in the audience are real big fans of the current KTU on-air personalities. I mean, most of the KTU announcers came out on stage last night (except for Diane Prior and Goumba Johnny) and the applause for them was extremely minimal. I think Hollywood Hamilton got the biggest response from the audience, and even that were extremely subdued. Bartel got very little applause, and when they introduced Paul Cubby Bryant and Jagger, it felt like I was the only one in the room who was clapping. (And I was just clapping to be polite).

I mean, I remember that at previous KTU events, certain KTU personalities would get a huge round of applause. People like Speedy, Vic Latino, Linda Lopez, Jewelz Lopez, Broadway Bill Lee, Geronimo, Baltazar, and even Charlie Burger seemed to get a really nice round of applause when they were introduced. The KTU personalities on stage last night received a very POOR welcome from the audience! Obviously, they are not widely liked by the freestyle listeners. Maybe some of the freestyle fans don't even know those people, since they many of them probably don't even listen to KTU regularly.

I loved the review!!! as for as the djs go.....the new ones dont have much appeal to the radio audience. The days where the dj were the object of people's desire are over. They got rid of a lot of great dj's and the station is suffering.

Thanks for the review. I did not go which I regret now. The lineup just did not seem as good as last year. But now I missed not going! Was it a big crowd?

The arena was pretty full! I don't think that it was a sold out show, but the arena was probably 85% to 90% full, and the audience was very enthusiastic and responsive to all the performers! There was a great turnout last year, but I'd say there were even more people this year. I was there with my wife, and 2 other friends of ours who also like freestyle and other kinds of dance music. I think the crowd was even more responsive than the audience at the Madison Square Garden concert back in July!

By the way, I liked when SaFire got her award and started to cry and get all sentimental. It took her a few seconds for her to start speaking because she had to fight off the tears. It was cool seeing her caught in a moment of such vulnerability! Totally massive!!! I guess it meant alot to her, since her reaction seemed very sincere. Coro got an award too, but he just played it cool and thanked everyone for their support.

Much respect and appreciation to all the freestyle artist that have been doing these shows year after year pouring there hearts out....for that thank less station called KTU that could care less about these freestyle artist or any dance music or dance artist ......

k7 - with all the recent lineup changes, perhaps you weren't there.

honestly, i don't think i saw you there myself. however, i did see a dark skin, bald guy dancing up on stage, but i'm almost sure that was my cousin hector.

Sorry! My apology. No disrepect intended. TKA and K7 also performed at the show and did a real good performance! TKA has been at virtually every freestyle concert I've seen this year (and I've seen ALOT) so I've already seen their performance many times this year. I guess that's why they did not stick out in my mind as much as the others at this particular concert.

It's ironic that I forget to mention them in my first post, because my wife's best friend was at the show and just told us that TKA and Coro were her 2 favorite performers at the concert!

hey k - i think u need to scale back on your shows so that you can leave a lasting impression.

I went to last year's concert and I thought it was a lot better. Judy, Coro, K7 and Brenda K. Starr were great and I just thought the rest were mediocre to poor. Sa-fire was pretty good too. I was disappointed that the only act that never performs at these concerts dropped out of the lineup with no explanation -Nancy Martinez. The DJ's from KTU that they sent were new and had no umph in their delivery. Hopefully KTU will deliver original artists next year and they will organize a better show.

to start it may not have been me your right it may have been hector.

mrderekevan thank you for coming to the shows all year round its great to see that we have some one as devoted as you too be able to go to as many shows too see the same line up over and over and yet still have a positive perspective on things .tell your wifes bff that we said thank you.
the things about theses shows is that the aura of the crowd or sometimes the timing or the performance itself may be more magical than on any other night.sometimes its the little changes that you take for granted the first time that makes the show better the next time around. i was joking with my comments no real need to apologise you saw a remembered what made an impact too you and its ok .

luvmesafire hey your girl got her very well deserved award that night so congrats to you as well. the love you show your favs elevates them and thier status with each mention.
i would love to scale down the appearances at what i call the cattle shows. i know that you guys are bored of them but what could we do ? we also need the work.the movement got a buzz again tell all the new kids too come out and make their money buy putting out the new music with that new young face we are just reopening the door.

i guess i sucked he didn't even remember me being there during his review lol

Kay...😱

After all these years of freestyle artists being dedicated and performing for this radio station, now KTU wants to give out achievement awards...Oh Hell no...what a joke...we will be discussing this in March at WMC 2008 in Miami also.....🙄

smooth, ktu didnt exactly start giving out awards this year. I believe the first one was given to Judy Torres, i believe in 2001.

I hear you. What I'm staying is that, recognize the artists whom over the years have always supported the radio station even though radio supoort was slim to none....The hard work and dedication that these freestyle artists have shown over the years should be recognized. Beatstock, Party Gras, etc..would be nothing without freestyle.... I give madd props to Kay, Cynthia, etc...and the list goes on and on, not because they are my friends, but each and every show you can tell they love each and everyone of their fans and always appreciate the love they receive.😉

K, You guys are always in demand, please don't scale down on your appearances!

what would be real nice is if they would add more different old school freestyle artist.....and new school freestyle artist to the shows as well...artists like nu image, ayna, etc....would be real nice and add spice to the show as well...

added new school artists will not sell tickets - unfortuanately, they have not have not have any established radio hits.
