omg if i could finally find out who in the world does this song i would die happy.. it's a male vocal but heavily distorted through a vocoder robot voice. the only lyrics i remember - and it's been many years since those glamourous roller skating blackout days - go something like this:

"turn the dial so the bass is loud and it makes the jam much sweeter"

i've tried to google this on countless occasions with every possible variation and nothing ever comes up. i've also amazon'd dozens of freestyle compilations and no luck there either. does it ring anyone's bells??..

thnx,
newavegrl

Sorry NEWAVEGRL, I don't have a clue on this one. Doesn't sound like Freestyle though.

What this a Miami Bass song maybe?

Actually "Miami Bass" would probably more accurately describe the genre this track belongs to. Sounds very similar to the Egyptian Lover, MC ADE and the artist Freestyle (which is possibly why I'm hazy on the whole freestyle-miami bass distinction). Maybe those fit into that Miami Proto Electro Bass category.. if there's such a combination? And would there be an alternate, more specific message board that could help me? I used to roller skate to the Miami Electro Bass songs back in the late 80s and "..turn the dial.." is the only one that I don't know the artist and can't really remember the lyrics (if the ones I supplied are even exact). Thanks for responding though.. and any more feedback or 'leads' would be greatly appreciated!

Ah yeah, MC ADE, MAGIC MIKE, E.LOVER, too name a few. I too used to have a big MIAMI BASS collection and quite frankly I'm surprise I don't remember this one. Did it have like a special intro, edits, scratches, etc? A lil' more info might help me more or someone else looking at this post.

Thanks!

hmm, let me see how i can jazz this up a bit: it would've been in the same skating rink set list as mc ade's "da train" or "how much can you take" .. kyper's "tic tac toe" or "ecstasy" .. the egyptian lover's "egypt egypt" .. and freestyle's "the party has just begun." overall song is very dark electro bass-esque and the lyrics i provided are part of the (or the entire) chorus of the song, so they repeat a lot. as per intros, edits or scratches i'm at a loss.

i can try to lay out the lyrics (revised from a reply i received from another msg board which i believe could be more accurate) in a way that illustrates the vocoder pitch of the words.. the bold+italics represent a higher pitch and the rest of it is sung in kind of a monotone robot voice. the last word, sweeter, is said twice at the end, with the 'swee' part being a higher pitch.

"turn it out .. so the bass gets loud .. it makes the jam much sweeter, sweeter"

this is probably just going to make things more confusing, but it's hard to type out a melody you have stuck in your head.. haha.
thanks again!

No, it's not confusing at all. Your choice of words actually gives me a clean picture of the song; however, I still don't have a clue on the song. In the words of Homer Simpson> "Doh!!" and Beavis & Butthead> " He he he, he he" I'm sure If I could hear a slight sample of it, then maybe I could remember it that way. I'm sure I had this jam as I use to buy records back then like crazy. Back then I didn't know Karate, but I knew crazee. JK!

Do you have it on an old analog tape by chance?

WOOHOO! i just wanted to share that someone on the 'oldschoohiphop.com' message board recognized and posted a link to this mystery song that's been plaguing me for sooo long.. artist: c'vello, title: this jam is cold. check it out:

it's not AS fabulous as i recall, and i did in fact have a few of the lyrics mixed up, but i'm still ecstatic as ever and will probably listen to it over and over again for the next few weeks.. haha. phew, this is finally solved. thank you for all of your time and efforts as well! l8r..
