Not in all cases. For some it takes a week for it to close. Facial piercings on the other hand closes really fast.

Tongue rings close fast, when I had my tongue pierced, I didn't like it cause I kept wanting to either spit or swallow the damn thing, so I took it out like 2 days after I pierced it & it closed in about an hour.

I don't think it is gross, it annoyed me in my tongue. As far as being on the receiving end...
